  • Jeff Copper (digcoaching.com) is an ADHD coach and host of Attention Talk Video which is part of the Attention Talk Network, attentiontalknetwork.com.
Got ADHD? Do you struggle with organization? There are professional organizers for the physical world, but what about the digital world? Have you found one? In this video, ADHD and attention coach Jeff Copper (digcoaching.com) talks about this phenomenon. He talks tongue-in-cheek about the challenges of organizing things digitally and how we're conditioned to dive into things with no preplanning, and, thus, why digital organizers don't exist because it's so complicated. If you struggle with organizing, this might not solve your problem, but it will certainly validate where you are. Jeff also gives some thoughts and ideas about how to move forward by designing your digital organization before you dive into it. Watch this video for insights.

It’s hard enough to organize what I can see, yet alone try to organize anything I can’t see!

I've been trying to find a simple way to organise my music collection since 2014. No success yet, everything has a dozen "features" I don't want, or can't figure how to index an album by track number, or splits one record into three records all with the same name. I've finally resorted to ripping the CDs onto my harddrive so they are at least all in the same place.

Note if you have an mp3 of a song and can find it on your hard drive rt click the file for properties of control I on mac for info. There is a tab with the name of the song and artist. there is a change you can change it a bit... however BE CAREFUL... if you are not thoughtful you could create a bigger problem. Thanks for posting.

      Well actually... Yes!
I'm watching your videos to make sure that you didn't already address that subject
But for me it would be for people to understand how ADHD works in them, this way you will not confuse the problems, whether you're dealing with a neurological, psychological or just a bad habit, it is important to clearly identify them, and how they operate in you in your personality.
this way you don't waste your time try to fix what you think is just a little bad habit, when in reality you're dealing with something way bigger, a deep neurological problem...
On the contrary, you should not condemn yourself believing that you're dealing with a monster neurological problem when it is just a bad habit that has nothing to do with your ADHD and you can easily fix it.
in a sense what is ADHD and what is not ADHD
      it would really be appreciated!👍

@@Ouiofcourse Wow! That is a tough one! Here is why. People emotionally react and judge based on what they see (visable behavior). Next they judge the world throught the lens of their own experience. Further, people want things to be simple and short (3 to 4 minutes at most of a you tube video... less than 60 seconds on a short or instagram).
What you are asking for is a video to change peoples beliefs, their conceptual understanding of ADHD. Most don't want to be confused with the facts.
In short ADHD is an execuative functioning impairment. What does this mean? First, behavior is changeable, impairments are not. Impairments require accomodations. My eye site is impaired i need glasses to accomodate it. Neurotypicals judge the world throught their experience and can't comprehend what a thinking impairment is. Their go to is to prescribe behavioral training to try harder. Again, i just need to try harder to read without glasses.
Given ADHD is a EF impairment what that means is thinking towards a goal in your head is impaired. It needs an accomodation (i.e. glasses). People don't understand thinking. Day dreaming isn't what we are talking about, emoting (worrry etc) isn't what we are talking about. judging... jumping to conclusions isn't what we are talking about (judging is actually by passing what we are talking about. Leaning isn't what we are talking about. What i'm talking about is problem solving. For example without using your fingers calculate 3 to the power of 5 in your head. That is problem solving! Many people with ADHD get good grades. Learning or digesting information isn't as cognitively difficult to taking what you learned and applying it (people with ADHD know what to do they struggle doing what they know to do). In other words acquisition of knowledge and the executing knowledge is two completely different things.
People struggle with the extecution of knowledge (problem solving... 3 to the power of 5)... planning is problem solving, managing time is problem solving, making decisions is problem solving. All these tasks are cognativley difficult.. uncomfortable. It takes a lot of cognitive energing to sit in discomfort... to sit in pain... thus there is an emotional urge to escape the pain and move to something more comfortable. In the end doom scrolling is more comfortable than calculating 3 to the power of 5. Thus, people judge ADHD as a focus problem (a symptom) when in actuality it is a problem solving impairment.
Given the intangibity of cognition peopel judge based on behavior and thus, they teach EF skills (try to condition people to change their cognative behavior) that have limited impact because it doesn't accomodate the underlying impairment.
In the end if you have ADHD and if you can accomodate the impairment you can achieve your potential. Problem is those accomodations are inconvient for society. In my opinion diagnosis of ADHD are rising because of the move towards Do It Yourself (DIY). Dr. Thomas Brown once said and the need for independent work increase ADHD productivity decreases. In other words the more you are required to problem solve alone in your head (calc 3 to the power of 5 in your head) the stronger the urge to escape to something less cognitive demanding.
what i just wrote is hard to communicate in a short video when peoples mind is made up about what ADHD is and are listening for a simple tip or trick... all the whild not realizing they are drowning in a sea of tips and tracks that typically don't work.
Hope this helps. Got another idea for a topic?
My new cognitive ergonomice from the inside out program is a 14 week program designed to shift peoples mindset.

Waw thank you for this beautiful answer!🤌
So ADHD is a impairment that dramatically affects a group of cognitive abilities that we use to solve a specific type of intellectual problem.
Capacities that help us execute the knowledge we hold, not only in day today but in life in general
Because you can maybe use daydreaming to help you solve a artistic creativity problem, but when we're talking about (3*5), daydreaming is in no help...
And because (3*5) come in different forms, sometimes it's making a omelette, sometimes is planning an activity, or just organizing your office... your life get really difficult...
I should have started with what is "problem solving", it would have been easier
the only confusion would be what is the difference between reasoning(???) and thinking(problem solving) because you can have a high IQ and be ADHD...🤔

And for ideas of topic I would say...
what would be the best approach to tell a loved one that you are actually not lazy...
Which explain why I want to have a deep understanding of ADHD because I feel they're going to have a lot of question haha😂

I currently use two applications to organize lots of stuff. One is Notion (the database feature allows for management of todo-lists and projects and whatnot) and the other is Obsidian (great for organizing knowledge and write down thoughts and lots of other things.) Both have their learning curve and limits. Depending on your individual needs these tools can be a big help though.

As someone with ADHD and ASD, I find it way easier to organize my digital life as it is way too simple to create a space with the sole purpose of what I want to organize, unlike in real life. Creating a folder with the category is so simple compared to dedicating a physical space for a sole purpose. Probably due to me being autistic, but I don't understand how neurotypicals can't organize files nor can I understand their organizing system for real objects.

    Just realized that I'm ADHD
Still don't understand what exactly we can't do compared to neurotypical... is it just more difficult for us but we can do everything they can do?
Is there a list of exact and precise symptom about ADHD?
And also the differences in the anatomy of the brain of ADHD...
Cuz every time I search it is just really vague...
for example me personally, the big symptom that I have, my thoughts go everywhere feel like I have 10 TV in my head playing at the same time
And really not motivated to do boring stuff to the point where I just skip them even if they're important...
But I would like to understand what exactly happened in the brain why are we like that?

Thought I would just share a perspective. In interviewing the experts, I've come to learn that AD/HD is an executive function impairment. Executive function is a collection of mind tools used to solve problems. Because they are impaired, thinking inside your head to solve problems is more challenged than neurotypicals. Because it's more difficult, there's an emotional urge to escape the discomfort to do other things. The point of the video was to acknowledge that the digital organization is more taxing then organizing physical clutter and thus more difficult for those with ADHD.
      Thanks for posting.

Have you ever experienced a situation where you know what you need to do, you have what you need to do it, you understand why it's important, you even have the desire to do it, but you just...can't? That inability to initiate is an example of executive function impairment. It's related to your neurology, not your morality. I say that because it took me 39 years to glean that realization and for most of those 39 years I thought I was a useless, weak, lazy, broken, mistake of a person because I couldnt make myself do the things I thought "good" people do. Now I know better and can manage my impairments without leveraging the anger that came from self loathing.

Dr. Barkley's CADDAC lectures are probably the most googled thing by ADHDers on the 'Tube. Dr. Huberman's podcast can teach you the neurology you need to undertsnd the relations and systems of the brain that mediate and modulate things like motivation, mood, focues, etc. Start with the dopaminergic system, it has implications in many functions that are commonly impaired in ADHD.
TL:DR - Your pre-frontal cortex is under developed. Learn why that is a problem from Dr. Russel Barkley. Learn background neural anatomy from Dr. Andrew Huberman. Learn management tactics anywhere you can find them, but Jeff here is better than every single app that Instagram has tried to sell me.

Just a perspective… a common ADHD scenario I share: Imagine a person with ADHD needs to write a blog. They know what a blog is. They schedule it for Thursday at 11:00am. 11:00am Thursday comes and passes, and they didn't write the blog. Why? Because while they know what a blog is, they might have a topic or a few ideas. The challenge was thinking inside their head to organize their thoughts in such a way as to create a coherent message that people would read. This is the ADHD challenge. They know what to do the problem is doing what they know to do… again the challenge isn’t motivation it is HARDER FOR THEM TO PROBLEM SOVE INSIDE THEIR HEAD TOWARDS A GOAL (i.e. writing the blog).
The trick to ADHD is to make thinking easier by externalizing it, possibly collaborating with others.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts.
