Cutting the Hangman's Rope with a Bullet| Gun Myths with Jerry Miculek (4K UHD)

- čas přidán 7. 01. 2015
- Jerry tests the classic western myth (As seen in movies such as 'The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, 'Back to the Future Part III', and much more) that you can cut a rope and save the day with just your gun, a bullet, and some superhuman aim; Using period correct rope and ammo, and taking it to the extreme with a .50 cal sniper rifle. The results might actually surprise you!

I agree.
Remember: you don't necessarily have to cut it. You just have to weaken it to the point where it'll break before the person's neck will.
That was the 200 pounds of static weight
@@cgla6935 Yeah but the 200lbs isnt actively falling to the ground in this video, Its on top of something,l. If you shot the rope and got it weak enough as the person is falling, the Accelleration of the person should be enough to snap the weakened rope.
He says “I got more horsepower than Clint Eastwood.”

Watch the video again...that was more of a dragweed. Not too much tumbling. Gotta love the special effects from his video support team. Great vid Jerry.
I'll second the special effects! That tumbleweed seemed a little more animated
than your everyday tumbleweed.
And, that gel dummy had a heck of a six pack!
If it's tumbling, it ain't a "live" tumbleweed -- they break off their base after they die and dry up. :)
Really? the first thing i noticed is the fishing line pulling it
(Um, I came for the firearms vids, but the tongue-in-cheek "special effects"
were entertaining.
It was obvious that the, er, "tumbleweed" was being dragged, rather than allowed
to tumble. I thought it was a cute touch.)
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is my favorite Western of all time. Guns of the Old West are my favorite firearms of all time, so its interesting to see a Sharps rifle really can cut the rope with one shot. Can't beat the awesome quality and history of these great guns :)

I'm pretty sure the "shoot the rope" concept originated before guns existed. For example it's a staple of Robin Hood stories. And a arrow (with the proper arrowhead) is a better choice than a bullet for cutting a rope.
Either way though it's more reliable (though less dramatic) to shoot the hangman and save your buddy *before* he drops.
Oh that's long since covered. You can't save your buddy if he's still standing with his arms bound and his neck in a noose. You shoot the rope in middrop then he can barrel roll and start running while your buddy rides in with an extra horse.
A second late and his neck breaks. Better to shoot the guy pulling the switch.
@@alexclark4792 Or better yet... Shoot his hat off. He'll be cought like a deer in the headlights.
RedXlV it’s called a broad head.
@jondonwayne wayne Well it's your job to shoot the executioner if he's killing your friend isn't it? Also strangulation by hanging was only used on the worst of criminals. It has nothing to do with "skill". It actually is all in where you place the noose's knot if its on a shoulder side it snaps the neck if it's at the back or front it strangles.
That random tumbleweed had me rolling 😂

That second round appeared to make the first hit give way
Exactly. He should have replaced the rope for an accurate test. All he did was snap the already damaged rope.
@OPEN YOUR MIND B4 UR MOUTH We can see he didn't hit the rope in the exact same place. But the first shot damaged the rope, and the impact of the second further damaged it, allowing the weight on the rope to snap it.
@@howardsmith9342 Agreed! The inner strands were the only parts of the rope holding the weight. The outer strands were relieved of bearing weight during the first shot. All he did was sever the remaining weight bearing strands at a higher level with the second shot.
Man this guy is a killer shot. Never gets old to watch
3:54 in, the rope actually breaks where the first shot nicked it, not where the 45-70 hit it.
bobw222 also in most westerns, when using a pistol, they fire at least twice when shooting a rope.
Sisal ropes have short fibers that's why they are weak. 2 shots close together did the trick
Would the weight of an actual man hangin have caused 45 colt to split the rope ?

The intro is better than many western films 🥰 loved it
You and old hickhock should test your draw time on targets and see who's a better slinger
j lindsey hickock is great but jerry is a much better shot
Jerry's draw time is what made him famous more so I'd say
Hickok ain't a half bad shooter but Jerry is in a different league. A Hickok/Jerry collaboration would be great though.
I like Hickock but he'd have no chance
I think Hickok used to do cowboy shooting competitions. Though I would guess he's not as fast. Still though, funny how Hickok and Miculek have such similar styles though. Gray hair, glasses, mustache, hat.
Wow, I actually never realized that The Outlaw Josey Wales featured almost the same thing, He shoots a ferry rope with a 1865 Sharps Rifle. I never made the connection but it is almost the same thing.
Yah I just realised too
+DTKT Defensive Concepts That ferry rope was huge in diameter. But with the tension on it...it broke easily.

Wish it was a fresh rope when the 500 grain was fired because on the slowmo it appeared that the rope got snapped from the previous point of impact....
Chekirrout
It absolutely does. the 45/70 causes the .45 long impact to fail
outlaw josey wales...."this here is what we call a missouri boat ride"... shoots heavy rope on river ferry with sharps...
Wouldn't you aim for the previous hit, too?
I was thinking the same thing. Why would you shoot the same rope twice and consider that a fair test between two guns. I don't doubt that the 45/70 wouldn't have a better chance of snapping the rope but I find it hysterical to really fire on the same rope twice and even worse, just a nick above the original .45 impact.
Adolf Hitler He hit it dead nuts in the center with a .45 LC wadcutter, with 200+ pounds on it. Apparently not, haha!

Yep. Bit of trivia, wanna know how the movie's title was translated in Spain? 'Cometieron Dos Errores'. Literally, word by word, it means 'They Made Two Mistakes' - obviously, the first being lynching the wrong man, the second not making damn sure that he was dead for good.
Don't tell me that's not one of the best titles for a western tale you've ever heard.
We must've had someone here in Spain in the movie business during that era that loved westerns to death, and had the mind of a cowboy and the heart of a poet, because there were more memorable cases, like 'A Few Dollars More'='La Muerte Tenía un Precio' ('Death Had A Price'), 'The Searchers'='Centauros del Desierto' ('Centaurs of the Plains'), or 'Once Upon A Time In The West'='Hasta Que Llegó Su Hora' ('Until His Time Came'). Whoever it was, sure had a flair for epicness, hands down.
Hang'em right that won't be very long. Just a snap and it's all over. Do it wrong like most suicides do though and ouch

That second one actually just snapped at the spot the revolver made so the second one didn't really do it either. The shock from the second shot just caused the first shots weak spot to fail.

If you had someone dangling and struggling - rather than just hanging limply, I wonder if the remaining threads would hold or snap - with the Pistol shot...
I wondered if the weight had not bottomed out if the last strands would hold it up. I also wonder what his ammo and bullets shelf looks like now. Wow! that is a lot of boxes.
Jerry reminds me of my Aplied Maths lecturer, in looks and he also gets very excited in gun sums
Imagine watching some guy in a poncho eating jelly and you going over to ask for some and he just whips out a revolver, sets his timer and puts 6 round in your gut, reloads, and does it again. Then people cheer after you hit the ground and he reads off a time of 2.99 seconds
