  • Barry Bonds - World Record Hitter (MLB Baseball Home Run Documentary)
    ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series continues its Emmy award-winning reputation for excellence by profiling one of the greatest athletes and most fascinating personalities in the game today. A 13-time all-star, Bonds is the only player in baseball history to amass 500 home runs and 500 steals. He holds the single season home run record of 73 and his pursuit of Hank Aaron's all-time career record of 755 dominates the sports headlines. Although his surge to glory has been clouded by controversy and relationships with teammates and the press have been strained, Bonds' historic achievements are undeniable. Now, for the first time on DVD, this riveting documentary allows you to go inside the dugout for a revealing look at Barry Bonds.

    Ruth didn't play against anyone of color. Aaron (like many other players in baseball history including Bonds) took greenies. Bonds juiced once he saw everyone else juicing and proved he was still the best player on earth. He faced pitchers who were on PEDs on a nightly basis and broke them. He's the best ever no matter the criteria. AND MOST OF THE DRUGS BONDS WAS ACCUSED OF TAKING WERENT BANNED DURING THE STEROID ERA. And I also think that 60 HR in a regular season today is a number impossible to reach without steroids. Everybody knows that there was something wrong back in Bonds, Sosa and McGuire`s days.......too many records were broken and some guys easily reched 50+ homers in a regular season, in the early 2000`s Barry could hit a HR blinfolded, all he had to do is hit the ball....just that simple.

    • @alwillk
      @alwillk Před 7 lety

      No he wasn't. He never had a very good arm mostly why he played LF and wasn't a great fielder (Gold Gloves are joke so don't even mention them). He was a great offensive player.

    • @johnniejay
      @johnniejay Před 7 lety +4

      Playing LF doesn't mean you can't throw....it means you aren't as fast as the guy at CF. Barry Bonds was a 5 tool player, and one of the greatest the game will ever see. No-one will ever hit more than 762 home runs, that's for sure.
      As for Gold Gloves - they aren't a joke, and Bonds has got 8 of them.

    • @alwillk
      @alwillk Před 7 lety

      Wrong and Wrong
      He could run well and had decent range, which is why he was CF to start his career, but you need an arm to play center and right. He didn't have one. Which is why moved to LF. If had an arm he would have played RF.
      Yes, it does. Generally, your worst defensive players play LF or 1B. Gold Gloves are a joke ask anybody who knows baseball.
      So he can't be a "5 tool player" without an arm or even an average defender.

    • @johnniejay
      @johnniejay Před 7 lety +2

      You've basically contradicted your own argument. Bonds spent about 4 years (a reasonable amount of time) at CF when he was in Pittsburgh, and by your own admission "you need an arm to play center". He switched to LF because he couldn't run in San Fran as well as he could at Pittsburgh (in fact he lost a lot of speed even when he was a Pirate, and shifted to LF there towards the end), not because he couldn't throw. Did he have the greatest arm in the history of baseball? No. Was it above average? Yes. I just know you're going to link me to a video of the 92 NLCS Game 7 though, which most haters seem to use to justify this argument.
      How exactly can Gold Gloves be a joke to "anybody who knows baseball", when they are voted for by managers and coaches in the Majors?

    • @alwillk
      @alwillk Před 7 lety

      If had an decent arm he would have been in RF. CF with good arms move to RF. I.e. Tori Hunter, Andrew McCutchen. CF with bad arms move to LF. Barry Bonds, Johnny Damon,
      Gold Gloves are based not based on any defensive stats at all. It's popularity contest. Hell, Jeter won a bunch despite being a statue at SS.
      If he was in the AL he would have been a DH after the '98 season. He was a negative Defensive player every year after that until he retired and from 92-98 he was average. 86-91 he was very good. So most of those Gold Gloves are a joke. Mainly the ones he won from 92-98.
      Bonds was an average defensive player at best.

I think he caught a lot of the heat because he's black, but also because he refused to play it nicey nice with the press. The Baseball players I know, tell me that at least half the players were juicing...You look at that Angels team the Giants played in the World series... I'll bet most of those guys were heavy on the juice... Friend of mine played baseball for one of the Pac Ten Universities, he said well over half the guys were on juice... PED's or not, I don't think I've seen a more dominant player in Baseball then Barry Bonds. Listen to Doc Ellis, (after he got sober :) ) he said that in his day, most, if not all Major Leaguers used speed. Why don't they have asterisks next to their names?

      @Nimfa McDonald I suppose that if you prefer "arrogant" to the way I stated it - "...he refused to play nicey nice with the press", I can understand your perspective. However, it's never been more obvious to me in America, that the country is sick with racism. Sick (White) People who mean well, but are still in this fog of "if he'd only play nice he'd be in the hall" ... are mistaken. There is AN ENORMOUS double standard here... Colin took a knee, and he's unable to get a job in the NFL. Yet... our most trusted public servants do it on camera, and are praised by half the voting population. But folks still insist that race doesn't figure in stuff like this. I say this because I used to feel the same way you do Nimfa McDonald... I thought that if a few blacks were allowed to the table, and if they "behaved"... well, things would be getting better for black folks in this country. I believe, and it's my experience, that most white Americans are still stuck in that tribal, instinctual reacting... they are not evil, I believe that most of us are good people. But for me, if we ever want to transcend the nightmare that is America today, we'll have to change.
      God I miss baseball... God I miss being able to enjoy a game without politics...but, sorry, I find it really hard to go back to ignoring generations of horrific injustice... Barry Bonds' situation is a very tame example of it... I wonder how many black men are either in jail, or dead because they "didn't play nice"? Look at the statistics... look at the prisons...
      Here's to better times!

Power: The all time leader in Home Runs King with 762, greater than Aaron, Ruth, and Rodriguez. Single season Home Run King, with 73, greater than McGwire, Sosa, and Maris. Speed: The only member of the 500/500 club with over 500 home runs and over 500 stolen bases. Fielding: 8 time winner of the golden glove award. His father was subjected to prejudice. Even his godfather: the great Willie Mays. I'm sorry, MLB robbed me of seeing the greatest player do his thing. Right now he would've had 800 plus homers, more than 3000 hits. The reason I'm still watching MLB is because of players like Trout who remind me of Mantle, Stanton and Judge. Babe Ruth played in the deadball era, first 5 years didn't even hit much as he was a pitcher winning like 18-20 games a year. How many homers would he have had if he played as a hitter entire career in the liveball era? For those that don't know, they changed the physical composition of the ball as well as rules regarding scuffballs, spitballs, and putting out fresh balls for play (originally they'd play with the same old dirty ball beat to hell getting all soft and mashed with no pop, now they always play with fresh balls). He'd have more homers than Aaron, bonds, and plenty of those modern HR guys were juice on roids! And no one has ever beat his single season record that wasn't juiced on roids! (Remember, Maris hit 61 in 1961, but needed more games, thus making it a different HR record by anyone with a brain, but yes for the number of games he played, non-juiced ball and non-roided, Maris has the single season record).
    Further, yes humans were still humans in 1930-1950 era, with great pitchers capable of pitching HARD. For those that say "pitchers lobbed 'em in" then ask yourself the question...easier to hit a homerun off a slow pitch, or a fastball? I'll give you the answer, It's much easier on a fastball, if you connect right on a fast pitch you barely gotta swing. Babe Ruth was the master at generating power and had a higher HR to AB ratio than anyone in the all time HR list.

    I agree with @Tempelton Cane, Barry Bonds is one of the best to ever play the gae and it is a shame that he is being discredited of this due to assumptions of PED's. Exactly, even if he did take PED's (which he was never proven guilty of) he still hit 760 career homeruns. Something not just anyone can do. This documentary does a very good job of highlighting the goods of his career to make him reflect on the person he his. Rhetorically speaking the pathos used really emotionally effected the audience of his fans and him personally, as he teared up.
