    Yes, the bird does look a little frazzled. I'm going with I pet him too much and ruffled up his feathers lol. Also, I wish these student grade paints smelled like honey as much as the pro grade ones do, because it is a rather pleasant sweet smell.

    Yes, the bird does look a little frazzled. I'm going with I pet him too much and ruffled up his feathers (I certainly did not go too crazy with those stray feather strands lol). Also, I wish these student grade paints smelled like honey as much as the pro grade ones do, because it is a rather pleasant sweet smell. They must add a different amount/combo of binders to these.

      I just got this set (in the tubes), Amazon sale, and I'm wondering if I should return it and get the professional set... it hasn't been delivered yet, and I'm having buyer's remorse.

    Hello, I keep looking at ever more of your videos! I'm too old and not serious enough to actually care so much about paint - I know, go wash my mouth out! I watch because of the beautiful way you swatch everything and I love the art you do at the end! Thanks again for providing me with such pleasure!

      Haha paint blasphemy :P Sometimes my existence seems to revolve around the care and evaluating of paint, but I'm glad to hear the videos are enjoyable for the swatch and art sections too. Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I appreciate you taking the time to write :)

      @@KimberlyCrick hello, its the paint blasphemer..... I'm going to do a pile of boring just ordinary Windsor & Newton student grade - keep breathing Kimberly, in, out - swatches. I shall throw salt on them and frame them when done. Oh yeah, monkey see, monkey do.....told you I was inspired! Tiny

    I have this set, and I treated like a pastel range. I find the colors to be nice but only use it for very light florals. Overall I like it a lot. And thank you for showing me the hand strap on the back! I always thought it was to keep the pallet from sliding LOL

    I have the 24 pro set and I wish I’d known more about what I wanted from watercolor before I took the plunge. It was $100 and although I still use it, it definitely is more suited to botanical artists. I do mostly portraits and character design and find their earth tones and neutrals to be bland. Their reds and yellows are extensive. They are bright and clear and lovely. But I just prefer more oomph and vibrancy. More pigment load. I wouldn’t even recommend Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle as an alternative. Anyone starting out should grab a set from Paul Rubens. Whatever you do, a kind W&N Cotman. But the Paul Rubens are affordable student grade that are reliable and very high quality for that they are. I never felt like I had to fight with them to get them to work. I prefer the more moist properties of a lot of Asian style watercolors, but Paul Rubens seems more middle of the road. They’re just high quality student grade watercolors that help you learn what you like and don’t like and how you want to use watercolors and what you want from them. I still use them today for sketchbook, studies and backgrounds, even after getting 24 sets and additional sets from more professional lines. They’re enjoyable to use, I never felt like the need to limit myself because of how expensive and precious they were like i did when starting with more expensive paints. I just think you’ll get more for your money but that’s just my opinion. Sennelier and their student range are lovely and have their strengths for sure. You could easily do MUCH worse then La Petite when starting out with other brands or any of the cheapo depot Amazon specials.

    I find senneliers professional earth colors weak and lacking BUT sennelier professional reds and violets are some of the most beautiful Ive ever seen and worked with....I dont buy sets of watercolors, 90 percent of the time I go thru the entire range of a pro grade brand Im interested in and pick out the colors that I want/colors that work for me...then I slowly buy the colors over time. I have this weird thing about having a tube of paint that I dont like or use in my collection, which often happens when one buys a set...I also hate getting doubles of a color which again sometimes happens in sets....so i dont have any sennelier student grade paints but I loved this review just the same. Thanks for sharing, much love♥️

      Indeed, Sennelier makes some beautiful paints - but some of their earth tones are just weaker than other brands. Their student set is not bad by any means, but the pigment load difference can be quite apparent between their student and pro grade. I come back to their pro grade reds/violets as my top preferred paints of those colors time and time again. Thanks for your nice comments and happy painting :)

    I haven't seen your review on the professional line of Sennelier watercolours yet - hope you will do it at some point. I have found all your comments matching very closely (if not completely identical) to what I observed on my own set: they don't rewet that easily, uneven behaviour / colouring strength from one colour to the next, weak "cobalt", very nice white... And yet, I do enjoy using this set. In fact, your review of the Renesans paint also matches my observations (I find myself pretty frustrated with their tubes as they seem very hard to rewet and seem to form a film)

      Definitely will do the Sennelier pro video as soon as my lightfast test of all 98 colors is complete and all of them have been swatched for my pigment database site. I'm slowly putting together big brand overview videos that focus on which colors are their most unique and which ones to avoid because they fade etc. Yeah, I was not happy with Renesans, a pity how shiny they all dried for me.

    Well, the cobalt blue hue is supposed to emulate cobalt/cerulean blue PB35 so it makes sense that it's quite light and opaque :) And I think it's a bit weird that you wish for a black paint because "the common opinion that you shouldn't use black is wrong and some artists create great works with it" while complaining about the white just because "the common opinion is that you shouldn't use white"... even though there are also many artists who use white watercolor paint very effectively in their works. This double standard doesn't really make sense to me.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 3 lety +2

      This cobalt blue hue fails to emulate cobalt or cerulean, as it is not granulating/textural enough nor is it any better than having an ultramarine blue instead. It's a bit strange the decision, because PB29 ultra blue is one of the cheapest and most useful pigments usually found in beginner sets. The problem with a couple of these colors were that they were weak, the unusually pale paynes gray and lack of a good deep burnt umber and ultramarine means that mixing your own dark value color, such as neutral grays, shadows and black, is nearly impossible. The problem most watercolorists have with white is that it is often unnecessary due to the method of preserving white space on your paper, or diluting paints with water instead of white paint. It's different reasoning than the general dislike of black pigments that "look lifeless" compared to the more natural looking blacks and neutrals mixed from something like PBr7 + PB29. Using black (such as lamp black pbk7) results in less color shifts within shadows that tend to be present in real life. I personally don't mind the use of white or black, especially in non-realism art, and believe anyone can find a use of any color. To speed up my work I often use white gouache as final highlights rather than preserving white space or using masking fluid as is the traditional method in watercoloring. Those are probably the best explanations of why there are so many arguments about black and white, for different reasons from each other. Thanks for stopping by :)

    Idk how you’re able to layer with these paints. I bought them and i can’t later at all. Idk if I have a defective palette or expired palette or the formula changed to idk but I can’t layer it without the first wash being activated with the second wash .. as soon as I put my second wash over it the out line or dark hard edges reactivate and blends in with the second layer.. never seen anything like it

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před rokem +1

      What type of paper are you using? Paper sizing (gelatin, starch or similar surface coating) is the most important part of layering. In general granulating colors, or brands with a lot of binder (like gansai or old holland) are easier to lift than other paints, but most importantly paper surfaces are more or less absorbent. Try them on different watercolor paper brands to see if the one you are using is causing an issue (Arches, Bee, Winsor Newton cotton papers tend to be easier to layer on because they absorb the colors deeper into the fibers).
