  • Kim, you sound funny! Yes, but lets take a quick look at A Gallo handmade watercolors from Italy. Unbox, swatch, paint demo. Favorite colors, rare pigments, unique convenience mixtures. - show more=links -
    Thank you / indigosgaming for volunteering to do my voice-overs while I'm not feeling up to it. While my health isn't great, there are a couple other options for audio. Please cast your vote if you prefer music, subtitles or something else on my free public patron poll - / future-of-audio-67927115
    You can buy A Gallo watercolor at Jackson's:
    Individual A Gallo - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/a-g...
    Pan sets - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/a-g...
    Less costly alternative for individual pans with a ton of pigment options is Roman Szmal - Roman Szmal - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/rom...
    PAPER I mainly use Arches Cold Press you can find it on Jackson's UK - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/arc...
    or Blick USA - shrsl.com/2twqj
    A more affordable alternative = BaoHong academy cotton - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/bao...
    Porcelain palette with many small wells for easy color mixing: Amazon - amzn.to/32QbuAi
    or Jacksons - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/jac...
    Neptune paint brushes are a soft synthetic vegan imitation squirrel which hold an amazing amount of water!
    Brushes at Blick - shrsl.com/2tyw0
    Jackson's - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/sea...
    Amazon - amzn.to/3mwldCY
    Waterproof ink favorites - Black Tombow Mono disposable pens: amzn.to/3vB35gz
    or Uni Pin pens on Jackson's: www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/uni...
    Colorful line drawings can be done with disposable Copic or Micron pens, but the most economical option long term is dip/calligraphy pen or refillable technical pen using bottled ink.
    I most often use very fine line width 01 fineliners or 0.20 tip size technical pens.
    R&K SketchInk is lightfast, waterproof and comes in many colors: www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/roh...
    White highlights: I use white gouache and a 3/0 princeton heritage round detail brush. I no longer recommend gel pens (blobs, skips, fixed line width). Any pro grade PW6 Titanium White gouache can be mixed with watercolor to tint your highlights.
    M Graham has a lovely white gouache that does not crack in the dry pan as badly as other brands, but Schmincke Horadam's pro gouache is a close second with superb quality.
    Schmincke Titanium White gouache on Jacksons (UK/worldwide) here: www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/sch...
    or M Graham white gouache on Amazon US: amzn.to/3rIw8wi
    or at Blick: shrsl.com/3ds5w
    I use affiliate links. As an Amazon, Blick or Jackson's associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Thank you :)

      Narration caught me off guard at first but it is awesome. Better, much better, than music. Prefer the information and music puts me to sleep, well, the music on most youtube videos I should say.

      I had a little jump scare when I heard the voice because I was expecting yours and didn't read the title 😂 the shock was definitely there.

      Thought I clicked on the wrong video at first. I suggest the guest speaker announcing themselves as a guest voice over at the opening. Also, much prefer voice-over than silence or music. You offer a wealth of information which can be hard for some (myself included) to read on screen especially if watching on phone which I'm doing now. so voice-over is best. I loved this person's voice!

A Gallo paints are lovely- I really enjoy their lapis lazuli, but all their colours are very pretty :) I was introduced to them by SadieSavesTheDay, she convinced me to buy the original signature set 2- I like it as a more muted palette.

      Magical pitch shifting subwoofer earplugs :D I figure a lot of people are going to have a similar reaction lol. I realize that was probably startling, I'll put a note in the title/description as a warning - though it's kinda funny trying to imagine the looks on peoples faces "Kimberly... you sound funny"! Hopefully, despite being surprised by the narration, the videos will still be enjoyable. I'd love to use the help to get caught up on all the recordings I've been sitting on, just waiting for the audio parts.

    Hi Kim: Hope you are feeling 100 percent soon. I got turned onto A Gallo Watercolors before they became super popular. I think I've bought the entire line. Art supplies and painting are my passion AND weakness hehe. You are spot on about the flow. They are easy to control compared to other brands. I have the Tintorettos as well and have painted with them. I just like snappier brushes. I felt they gave me less control. I'm up for anything and my cheapo Himi standard round is still my go to. That and my Betty Haywards. Looking forward to your review on Isaro. I love that line as well. That lady knows her colors. I think her nickname is "the color lady". Her Dad made her handmade machines and her grandfather or great grandfather's work is in a museum in Belgium 🇧🇪. I just got Nordman green in and have to swatch it. I think that and powdery pink were your faves. It was jarring to hear the guy doing the voice over. I thought I clicked the Mind of watercolor guy at first. But keep your voice over artist till you feel better AND keep coming with the reviews. Love to see them and how often I agree with them. I was kinda disappointed with the Tintorettos thinking these have to be the bee's knees bc they are so fancy. You verified I'm not crazy about the lack of detail control. I still use them though bc I paid for them and I like to mix it up. They just aren't my faves. I like the Princeton Neptune 12 as well. -Jessica from GA

    Hi Kim, so sorry to read about your health. The voice over is totally fine, but nothing compares with having you back in good health. I wish that for you.
    It's been quite a while since we wrote about A.Gallo and at that time I had some swatches on IG telling Notturno was my new fav. color. Indeed, they still are one of my favorite handmades and I'm close to owning all of their paints now, a collection slowly built... but yes, it was / is easier and cheaper than Jacksons' living in Belgium/ Europe.
    It's so great to see your review and recognizing all those colors that I love and cherish. You always know to make the best use of them. Thanks for the great review.
    (edit): Yes, the brushes: personally I love them, but I don't have the one you have to compare with. My favorite Tintoretto brush is the long dagger and I also like the pocket brush nr. 6 (tintoretto 1327 sintetico Vajo) that comes with their palettes.
    Be well soon. Kind regards.
    Heidi

      Thank you, I too struggled to get the colors I wanted on their monthly website sale days. I was excited to see the individual colors stay in stock at Jackson's the last couple days, probably about to go out of stock again for a few weeks. I was finally able to leisurely get the potters pink that was always instantly sold out through A Gallo direct. I can't justify buying every color, but gathering a few of the most interesting ones can be a really enjoyable treat. I'll definitely do some DIY replica mixing and pigment comparison videos with these, so we can see how they compare to other brands :D

I noticed this brand last year but since everything on the website was out of stock, and at the time I didn’t understand how a handmade watercolor seller operated, I forgot about it until very recently. I’m tempted by the Copper Blue especially and it’s my favourite even before buying any. I use cobalt teal and turquoise from Roman Szmal a lot, they’re so pretty. Horizon and Zirconium are also on my wishlist, I’ll see if there’s any more I like that aren’t blue 😏 Also very interesting to hear the difference between the brushes. I was just looking at that range on Jackson’s and hadn’t heard of them or the Neptune before. The dot card being more generous than others is a good thing, I was put off by the price just of that, but I might go for it after all.

      I can totally understand that - if I wasn't completely obsessed with pigments and doing this sort of video/site work I definitely would have a hard time justifying these price tags. On the bright side now that I have them, I'll start doing some pigment comparison videos showing how their colors look next to the same pigment in other brands. I think I'll also do DIY replica mix videos for Olive Green, Notturno and Harbor Blue - we'll see how close we can get using cheaper stuff from other brands like Da Vinci or Roman Szmal. I appreciate your kind words and showing up even if you're not considering these. Happy painting :)

    i'm not looking too deep into things that arent earthy or reddish orange, as that's where some of my gaps are and i can't $$$ to buy a whole 'nother range and of fairly duplicate colors. --> tellin myself to get just a few of anything i want to try and NOT BUILD A WHOLE NEW PALETTE! i mean geez, i can sub in colors from other brands. On a video with such dense visual material (important to be actually watching not just listening), it would be very inconvenient to reed subtitles, especially considering the volume of text there would have been and speed at which you usually present it. Would be very difficult to create a reasonably easy to follow subtitles, it is way better to have a video voiced by someone else. Thank you for your work, don't stress about it.

    I love your harmonious voice and how it melts well in your videos. Nothing against the guest who voiced this, but watching it it's just different, it doesn't give me a sense of completeness as your past videos do. I would rather prefer music+subtitle, but the choice is upon to you and the community.
    Anyway, I find the texture of PV55 quite strange, I've contacted the support team and turned out that it seems that their PV55 has just that sandy texture. I would like to hear your opinion on this if it's possible... not like the color has problem or what, just a strange texture in masstone.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for your feedback, a couple other people have volunteered to lend their voices - so the next few videos may have more soothing female voices. I have PV55 from more than a few brands, and it comes in different shades that have a little texture variance. In Van Gogh, Roman Szmal and A Gallo all of them could be described as slightly oddly gritty/textural in masstone. It's just different enough from normal granulation to not feel as nice or expected, but the color hue is so beautiful I forgive it. I find that every brand seems to be less textural the more diluted it is, or pre mixed with a higher ratio or gum arabic and machine rolled. Without comparing swatches I can't say if there's additional things happening - sometimes paper, water source or even a different batch of paint/binder may have added extra texture to your sample. Aside from that, the texture in mine was not significantly worse than some of my other PV55s so I didn't think much of it.

      About PV55, I have a couple from Van Gogh e White Nights one, all of them are creamy once rewet, but A.Gallo's one has just this sandy presentation that I can't understand why since quinacridones are really smooth colors... In the diluited tint is less noticeble, but in the masstone it has somehow a crack texure, with a really weak hint of black when I start to gradient it.

    Can I ask why you sprinkle salt on your paper?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před rokem +1

      In swatching it is to check for dispersion characteristics, such as sinking/settling of heavy pigments or easily pushing away lightweight pigments, as well as color separation potential in multi pigment mixtures. In the case of two brands of granulating paints, such as one brands ultra blue vs anothers ultra blue, salt will tell you which one sinks more for use in color separating mixtures. If you have a mixture that includes a heavy pigment and a light one, salt will quickly reveal the two tones on a small swatch.

  • @lurklingX
    @lurklingX Před 2 lety

    got 3 colors in the post yesterday. *my exp?* Jarosite is hard to rewet. colors aren't drastically different from other brands except i'd say they SMOOTH out radically for a soft gradient, and it was unique. *SMELL: ok... rosemary? no. smells like menthol or something from cold lozenges.* it's faint. like, a random whiff and i remembered people said you could smell these. --yeah more of a *faint antiseptic or vicks vapor rub smell* than something herbally. is it bad? nope. it just doesn't smell of rosemary. (at least not the plant. god knows, essential oils sometimes smell nothing like the real thing.)
    btw, this isn't meant as a dis. just a smell/brand-comparison commentary.
    i still really love the color palettes they offer. but *at $16 or so a halfpan,* i can't say it feels like a better investment than say white nights at $4 a pan. (i just happened to be swatching that brand. i don't support the war.).
    ERCOLANO RED does also appear to be unique. and JAROSITE.... it's a very very pale gold buff, like Verona Gold Ochre but non-G.... AZZURRO is indeed a beautiful blue (i'm sure some brands would have similar. i just love that it's intense like a PB29 yet is a middle blue, not red-leaning.)
    *All three colors are pretty and have that softness.*
    but it's up to you whether the minor differences are worth the $$$$$ of handmade paint. (haven't done a full painting yet, this is just the swatch cards).

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +2

      Interesting about the smell, what you're saying sounds like clove oil - much more menthol leaning than the rosemary herb scent present in my pans. That makes me wonder if they had to use clove oil for a batch or have made changes to their paint additives.
      I will say that there is not a single brand out there that I would recommend every single color from. Each brand does certain colors particularly well and each one sources pigment powders from a different chemical manufacturer. In the case of A Gallo I would not recommend weak colors like slate gray, jarosite or deep sea green. I highly recommend the specific rare or unique pigments mentioned in this video and secondarily they also make amazing convenience mixtures like olive green and harbor blue. When evaluating a paint brand I definitely would keep in mind that a smaller sampling that may include weaker colors are not a great example of what they offer.
      About price, as of right now most half pans at Jacksons are averaging $9 each - similar to the price of high end brands like Schmincke, Daler Rowney or Old Holland. I do not currently recommend White Nights due to political issues, but I will say that White Nights does not carry many of the rare and unique pigments found in A Gallo - such as zirconium blue, potters pink and many of the most stable lightfast reds.

      Kimberly Crick Art Some of the colors I really wanted to try were out of stock unfortunately. Like Hokkaido orange and that granulating purple one that you mentioned. Notturno, was it? I still would like to try those, and I still have my eye on a small natural palette. It looks like a good little assortment and none of the colors I already bought are in it. But dang it’s $$$. Christmas maybe? 😅 (thank you for responding! And I love love love your CZcams and your website. I reference things on it CONSTANTLY.) But I figured all three of these colors were ones I would normally use and were a pretty good bet. I like that the blue is not to purple like ultramarine tends to be. For some reason I just really hate normal Ultramarine? Maybe that’s bizarre. But I definitely like the middle colors like cobalt blue, and I recently discovered that Da Vinci has a Ultramarine green shade, and that is a more neutral blue as well. :) I will definitely rewatch this video whenever I go to make any more orders for A Gallo. ✌️

    I was intrigued by this brand when I first heard of them.. however their marketing and business policies turned me off. I've seen similar predatory marketing in other industries, especially the beauty industry, and am familiar with the manipulation. Sending out tons of samples for sponsored videos only to claim no stock to sell.. requiring membership or subscription for info on extremely limited sales dates.. expecting customers to not only put their lives on hold to be available to buy but essentially fight each other over stock... extreme limiting of dot cards and individual paints so you are forced to spend big or go home empty handed...etc. Now that they are on Jacksons most of this isn't as much of an issue... but I'm still going to pass.
