Sitting in a junkyard for 40 years! 1960 Chevy Impala Will it run?!? Last registered in 1980!

- I pulled this 1960 Chevrolet Impala from a private salvage yard this fall. It was originally a 283 Powerglide car but the second owner who bought it from his uncle who had purchased it new installed a new 283 and a 3 speed overdrive in 1966. The car currently has 244,000 miles on it!! It also has a posi-traction rear differential as well that was likely added by the second owner. This car has already been sold as I already have too many projects!!

Hey thanks a ton Devin!! Means a lot to be put up there with the big boys!!
Yeah I just subscribed. I've seen of couple of his vids and it's good content.
@@golfpack7065 Thanks a ton for the kind words and subscribing as well!
ColdWarMotors, JonathanW, and Mustie1 too :)
@@seanspring8991 Absolutely. JonathanW is gold.
Probably the thing I love most about your channel is that you film most, if not all of the progress you make on these old rigs. And then to top it off you always have tons of startup clips and driving around footage after you've got it running. I just love it! I love to see the progress. You do a great job making us boys and girls of CZcams, feel like we're right there with you along every step of the way! Keep er up!
Thanks for the kind words Dave!

Regarding the original owner of the car: Rolf E. Sund, 77, New Rockford, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at his home. Mr. Sund was born April 10, 1931, at the family farm southwest of Sheyenne, N.D. .. he sounded norwergian, so I had to Google him :)
Damn best $200 spent i wish i could find a beauty like this
I think it’d be super cool to get this car sorted and take it on a roadtrip!
More of this old Chevy please!
Anyone that finds relics that's been sitting for about a thousand years and brings them back from the dead is a true awesome person in my book
Thanks much!
Glad you gave us the story on that car its always interesting to get some kind of history with a vehicle. Well no wonder that car is a bit broken in with 244,000 miles! I used to own a '68 impala with a 327 in it and drove it for years and sold it to a buss boy I knew in a restaurant for $750. He loved that car more than I did and really took even better care of it. Wish I never sold it though.
How flipping crazy is that?!?! I guess when you put 244k on a car you increase your odds significantly of running into a famous individual!! I always love hearing stories about cars or anything historical in general. Glad I could share it with you Larry! Thanks for watching!
34:45 Duff turns and looks at the camera "Can you believe this guy?" Dash in that car is AWESOME!Back when GM knew how to design cars.
A lot of nostalgia here for me... my first car was a blue 1959 Bel Air (in 1975). It was a four door sedan, but it had the "Blue Flame" 235 c.i. 6 cylinder w/ powerglide. It had pretty significant "weight reduction"... these old GMs used to rust almost before your eyes! Thanks for sharing with us... some of us old guys are digging this content!
Thanks so much for watching and telling about your 59!
Rust around the head light bezels
Your channel has inspired me to work on my project car after it's been sitting since 2014. It will live again.
Glad to hear it!
It's almost like I'm watching three different CZcams shows in one...sweet.
Glad I could combine them all! Thanks for watching!
The dog says "Screw this damn car , Im going to sleep"
He's got a ruff life.
A very good friend had a 59 Impala, 348 Powerglide, He swapped in a 3 speed and blew it apart pulling away from work, so we hunted around found a 3 speed from farm truck and put that in, it lasted longer. When you went out on the second drive the dash looked just like his and al these memories flooded back. Racing, cruising chasing girls OMG! Thanks for the video, enjoyed it. Dennis in Virginia
Glad we could bring some memories back Dennis! Great cars!
Dang I was not expecting that no rattling no smoking nothing she’s a runner.
Just popped right off! Easy peezy! Thanks for watching!

So What do you think? the new blues mobile or what? Cars got a lot of pick up, fix the cigarette lighter.

Great job nice to see those old chevys come back to life
I thought the dog was shivering, then i remembered what shivering dogs look like, she thoroughly enjoyed that ride!!
Ol Duff loves a good rip in an old rig!
Old Chevys never die they only appear that way!
Haha, someone commented they don't die, they just get faster!
I watched several videos of this channel and what I like these types of videos, and many others like this, is bringing these gems back to life. It's a shame how these vehicles are left to sit quietly in a field at the mercy of the elements but it's understandable that many previous owners could not afford to do repairs and must let them go. And when a vehicle is being repaired and running it's Duff Dog approved. Keep those diamonds in the rough running. You're doing a great job.
Glad you enjoyed them Doyle!
I was born in 91 and never worked on a carbed engine but you and VGG and junkyard digs are building my confidence up to buy an old abandoned vehicle that needs to be resurrected. The thought of these classics being crushed hurts my heart

@@MortskeRepair I kid you not, on this Christmas Day I’m going to rescue a 93 Silverado 6.5 from a barn in Holland Michigan. 150 miles away. Need an ignition, battree and some other odds and ends. Y’all gave me the confidence and I thank you. I’ll let ya know how it goes
@@maddoxlogging2303 How'd it go?!? We need the details!
@@MortskeRepair it was a battle with all the ice here in Michigan and a uhaul dolly. Had to get pulled 1/2 mile thru a field by a tractor the guy I bought it from had with the truck in tow. Got it home and with a couple fresh batteries and a spritz from the “bill cosby in a can” it fired off. Now I’m getting way out of my comfort zone and replacing the 5.7 from my 95 3/4 ton GMC ext cab long bed(completely rust free I must add) with that 6.5 TD. Same 4L80e in both trucks so I just need to swap wires and ecu, so I think. Living the dream!
When I was a kid, maybe in 1961 or so, the family took a road trip out West from Jersey to...all over. Somewhere in Wyoming, the '56 Buick broke down and the place where we were having it serviced lent us a '60 El Camino for a day or two. My brother (8 yrs older) and I rode in the back, we thought it was coolest thing ever. Story apropos of nothing in particular other than body style!
At least you got out of Wyoming!!! I always loved those 59/60 Elcaminos!! Never got to ride in the back of one tho! Thanks for watching and great story!
Ok Mortske, that first start was wayyyyy to damn easy lol. I love when it works out like that. For a 4 door thats a pretty kickass car !
Yeah, I wish you could have seen the look on my face. I was dumbfounded... At least it ran like crap when I tried to drive it so it required an ignition tuneup. Made me feel like a mechanic at least! Yeah, for a little 283 she really rips! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@@MortskeRepair Should have thrown one of those nifty Trump 2020 oil filters in it. Bet should would have given you less trouble ;-)

You just can't kill them old Chevys! My dad bought a brand new 60 Bel Air with 235 3 speed with over drive, he liked it some much he bought another one just like it then bought a 59 Bel Air 235 2 speed power glide for me to drive. I drove that 59 like she was a tank! Most dependable car I have ever owned!
The 235 is a great engine! I've got one with an overdrive as well.
That thing looked like an absolute hoot with the steering and sounded phenomenal on that last rip and it hit Phil Jackson what a cool ownership story!
No texting and driving in this beast! Thanks for watching!
I'd rustore it for a while. Go for function. Maybe some windows. Temporary floor repairs. Gather parts and restore it. Flattops are cool.
What a great find! and it took the beating you gave it!
You gotta test em out!
My dad had a flat top 60. He rebuilt the 6 cyl and trans in a one stall garage when I was a kid in the mid late 60's. It was in great shape. Rare style top, most are bubble top.
That's why I have do have it! Thanks for watching!
There's this one scene that really cracked me up. It was when you first fired it up and the dog looked at the camera with a look that said "Help me", LOL! She's a runner, maybe you can raffle her off.
Sent him scattering with all that raw horsepower!! I'll look into that!
Did you kidnap that dog?
@@stomper2582 Nope
The dog looks like he's ready for a nice long road trip with the heater cranked.
Duff loves a good road trip! Thanks for watching!
Ol Duffy was hangin on for dear life on this ride 😂.
That 283 is a keeper....and you can't beat a posi for makin' 11s when the mood takes ya. Them rear shocks and bushings don't half give you the sea sickness watchin' the world go back and forth and all through the ol' windscreen, but that 283 sounds great. The box has seen better days, but you can still grind it 'til it fits, so its a keeper.
Watching you pinking things under the car, there's quite a few hours with a welding torch under there and the rear quarters and arches are going to need some special love.....to say nothing about the floor. She's got some good lines and a good heart, but she's a money and time pit to get her anywhere near respectable inside and out.
I tend to agree that she's at least doubled in value since you got her running and driving with a good thump on all eight and you know more about her driveline condition / specs and some interesting historical bits, which will be a good selling point even if it doesn't add a bit extra to the value. If I were in your shoes, I'd move her on to someone who has a vision for how they want to bring her back and let THEM spend the big bucks.....then work on something else in the way you enjoy working on vehicles.
I watch this channel for your sense of humour and personality as well as what you get up to, so whatever you prefer bringing to us, I will be sitting here enjoying it - like quite a lot of other fold it seems! Would love to see / hear another flathead V8 - and if you fall across a 51 Mercury, THAT I would love to see you bring ALL the way back - but a revival / drive in a late 40's Ford truck with flathead V8 and crashbox would be s&&t hot. (I aint a Ford man, but my Dad was and there's a few memories I'd love to relive, eh....) Whatever you do man, keep doing it.
Lance!! You nailed exactly what I was thinking on the 60! I'll keep plugging away. there might be another flathead sitting around the place I can fire up. But now you want a ride in it?!? Dang! I'll have to step up my game... Thanks again as always for your support!
Just found your channel think we are all going to get along just great. 😂😂. She sure is a beauty

40 years... But it seems so easy... Thanks to share.
Gotta get lucky once in a while!
My twin bro and I owned one just like this our junior year in high school, 1966!!! Big 348 with 4 barrel carb, auto trans. All the rich kids were driving SS Chevells and Mopar hemis. The old Impala wasn't quick but she was roomy, lotsa room in the back seat of that old 60 Chevy!!
Hey mortske.nice car. Runs very good. Was a good donut. Cool too see that. Keep the car. Make it from the in an outside better. Paint and new glass
Looks like shes got the optional white knuckle steering lol. That thing started way faster than I figured it would.
This thing is WORN OUT!! Downright scary to herd down the road! I was disappointed with how easy it took off... Thanks for watching!
Loved the video! I had over twenty 1960 Chevys. My favorite year! I owned two Sport Sedans like the one you showed. One was the same color as yours, Horizon Blue/White roof. My other one was Sateen Silver/Red interior, power windows, brakes, steering and factory a/c. Both were 348 cars. I had two red convertibles, one was 283, power glide the other was 348, factory 4 speed. I bought the correct 3 deuce set with factory air cleaner, but never put it on. I had a '60 Biscayne police car which was totaled when a lady hit me broadside. Others were several El Camino's, one Brookwood station wagon, 2 & 4 door Belairs and many 2dr Impala hardtops. I have one Impala 2 dr hdtp that I kept. It's Tasco Turquoise, p/s. p/g, tinted glass, 283, with power pak heads, 4 bbl, dual exhaust from the factory. Wide whites, full wheel covers/spinners and fender skirts. Just turned 78,000 original miles. I guess you could say I love '60 Chevys. Gets in your blood!
im
You are the 60 king Tim!! Dang a 348/4spd car would be killer!!
That's how I learned to drive. In a Chevy just like that one. With sloppy steering and bad brakes on icy, gravel roads. It was "let's see who can keep the car from going sideways or into the ditch". ahhh.... the good times
If you can drive this you can drive anything!
I need to get me a project car like that something that I can put some blood sweat and tears in. I like seeing them first start videos man keep it up
Come buy this thing before I fall in love! Thanks for watching!
Pretty remarkable for a car that last ran when I was 11 years old! Ok, it's far from perfect but I'm still suprised at how little you had to do to get it moving. This is why simple old tech rocks!
This one was about as simple as they come! Thanks for watching Paul!
And probably. A lot of editing
I've had 3 '59 2 door Impala's in my time, my 2nd one in 1979 had the side view mirror mounted on
the front fender it had 62,000 actual miles with the original plastic seat covers.
It was all original. The trunks were so large on the '59 & '60 Chevy's I lived in the trunk.
I spent a lot of time in a 59 sport coupe as a child. Not much in the trunk fortunately!
@@MortskeRepair The sport coupes had such large trunks I spent most of the time in the drivers seat driving the cars as they were so much fun. My first '59 was my first car in 1977 I was 17 & had a "Christine" like obsession with ''59 Chevy's I got into a wreck & so I bought a 2nd '59 2 years later. Not worth fixing it was cheaper to buy a better one.

Lower the bar a bit for me!! Haha thanks for watching!
I love how your dog eagerly jumps into the front seat of every new vehicle you acquire.
Except on the International! He's always gotta be first through the door and ready for a ride!
I had a 60 Impala with 348 that I took out the power glide and add 3 speed in the floor shifter. That grinding going into 3rd gear was just like mine. I had to double cutch it to get in to 3rd. I was station in Minot Air force base 66-68. I broke 2 rear ends while I had the car. Just found and subscribed to your channel. Like what I see so far. Took my wife on our first date in it. Sold it when I went over seas for a year.
I really love those w-blocks!! Such a great looking engine!! Love to have one in a car someday! Thanks for watching and most importantly subscribing! Thanks for your service to our country as well!
I love this car. I have a red 59 2DHT and love the dash gauge pods. You should keep going and gully resurrect her. Flat roofs aren’t redone often. She’s a gem. I love watching your channel. Very cool and funny too!

That car is about the same as the one my grandfather owned. His was vare Bones stock inline six no power brakes and nothing else. One of the biggest issues these had was a super light ass end. They are known to lift up the ass end at highway speeds and so it's a car you have to sandbag the trunk no matter the season. Too bad my grandfather traded it in in 1978 for a brand new Buick Skylark. Bare bones too. Good car but I'd have been much happier with his old 1960 Chevy. Loving the videos man! Keep em coming!

I'm a Grand Forks resident. I grew up here during the 60's and 70's. 67 and 68 I was in grade school. So I remember most of those years. I don't know about seeing that car here in town but I do remember seeing and meeting Phil Jackson. Back in the 60's he was a student in one of my dad's classes.

Clean up the Impala. Maybe you can find a replacement bench seat in a junkyard. This car is from one of my favorite periods of cars, 1959-1962. Loved the Flattops and Bubbletops. Wagons are super cool. That motor seems to like to run. Super entertaining video.

No doubt!
This 1960 Chevrolet reminds me of Bob Seger, "Making love in the back of (his) '60 Chevy."
DuffDog.....OHHHHHHH YEAH!
At that time the electric clock was standard with the Impala. The Impala came standard with the unique exterior trim, upholstery, and likely additional foam padding on the seats and sound insulation. Otherwise, the V-8, automatic transmission, overdrive, power steering, power brakes, heater, windshield washer, whitewall tires, and even wheel covers were all optional. A similar but rarer Bel Air Sport Sedan was also made this model year. Looking at the door jambs, this car appears to be originally painted in Horizon Blue.
Ahh I knew the clock was an option as it wasn't on all cars but makes sense it came with the high trim level. Love that you've got all that info!! Thanks so much for commenting! And watching!

The overdrive did not engage until at least 31 mph and then I had to let up off the accelerator and then it would engage. Had passing gear once I put petal to the metal. It also had the wrap around windshield. Hard top convertible meaning no center post. I was 20 years old and stationed in Tampa, Florida. The girls loved it. Oh yes, I am almost as old as dirt now.
