Will It Run?? | ONE Owner 1964 Impala, Sitting since 1983, STUCK ENGINE, Struck By A TORNADO!

- Its getting harder and harder to find rust free cars, especially when they are true one owner vehicles that have been sitting for more than three decades! This 1964 impala was traded to my friend for some upholstery work, and I was able to buy it from him. Sadly, the car was caught in a tornado and suffered quarter panel damage on the passenger side and a broken windshield. The 283 v8 was locked up, but with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears I was able to free it up. This car will live on for many years and be put back on the road, stay tuned for more updates on this car!

Love this car it reminds me of my grandma's 63. Talk about original, it still had the original heater hose clamps against the firewall. Thank you for sharing 👍🏻
glad you liked it!
You are the parts swapping king! Send me that perfectly fine starter you removed!
Its in the mail!
LMAO
Tom you know you want the whole car 🤔😂
I had this exact same car when I was in my early 20's. A 64 Impala sport coupe with a 327 4 barrel V8! Loved that car but it rusted out from under me not long after I got it! So I was totally interested when I saw that you had gotten this poor little survivor! Would love to see you bring it back to life with a cleanup and some repair and definitely repair that rear quarter panel! Will keep watching for updates!
ill have an update next week!
Love the car, she's a beautiful ride. I think you should fix the quarter panel. Its a great car either way
That's the plan!
I had a 69 Impala with a 327, my first car. What a sweet ride this 64 is. Even with the body damage in the rear and the front windshield damage it's still a sweet ride. I'd pull out the rear quarter damage and replace the the glass. But I wouldn't paint it. I'd preserve the patina with clear coat as much as i could. An excellent pick Ryan.
Beautiful car, dents and all! Glad you stuck with it and got it running!
thanks Nancy!
Norm may be Ford guy but a car guy is a car guy and we all want to see old iron run.
amen to that
Restore definitely! Fix the rear quarter if it can be. What a sweet find!
Absolutely thanks man!
That quarter can be fixed by someone that knows what they are doing
I am glad that you got it running, but I love listening to the starters when those old cars are cranking!
If i wasnt frustrated, id agree and say it sounds great! Lol
Yeah, I understand that it had to be frustrating!
Ryan, thanks as always. Beautiful 1964! You're the best at picking up great cars. Love seeing your new facility.
Thanks again!
What a rewarding feeling when you get them to fire up and run again, also great to save these old cars they become fewer every year, Liked Vid
Thank you!!
My trick is fill cylinders with Mystery Marvel oil. Let it sit. Each day add more. Week later. Then turn over. Let it soak and lube up cylinders.
Nice find. Will make a great cruiser.
Great tip!
That is one SWEET 327!!! Persistence pays - that thing sounds ready for cruisin'. I say find a donor, cut the rear quarter and graft her in. That ride should fetch you handsome dollars!!! Another awesome catch!!! Thank you too, Tom!
Its a 283 buddy! No callouts on the fenders
@@IowaClassicCars my bad! The valve covers threw me off! Though, that was a pretty healthy sounding 283!!!
Before you put the hood back on give the engine bay a really good clean up.
That one can definitely be brought back. I hope it doesn’t get turned into a lowrider. A good trick for stuck motors is to take out spark plugs and pour in Marvel Mystery Oil in all cylinders; automatic transmission fluid is also good. Let it sit for some time. Most times they loosen right up. As you use it compression will increase too. Sounds like you need a new exhaust system too.
Fingers crossed!
Man that's a great find Ryan 👍 she sounds pretty dang good. With some work she'll be a great cruiser, best to you brother!
thanks Jazz!
Think you going to have a winner. Considering how stuck the engine was at first. It run pretty smooth. Great job men. Thank you for sharing!
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
Beautiful car 64 is my favourite year of the 60s I would totally restore that old girl. Thanks for the content Ryan I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching!
Happy to hear that someone else prefers the original wheels on survivor classics: Those wheels nearly hurt my eyes when I saw the car.
This interior is exactly the same as I have in my 63 Impala.
Nice and yes only og wheels look correct
Sounds great! You've got some good friends and neighbors. I loved my uncle's black w/ red interior 283 '64 Impala when I was a kid, but he wrecked it while driving drunk in 1986, just a couple years before I was of-age to buy it. 😠😠 And the plan was for me to buy it while he downsized.
That's definitely a 327 I can tell by the valve covers
The V8 fender flag alone is a 283
327 has the V8 flag with "327" over it
The valve covers are identical on 283 and 327. Just different stickers
@@mikieman those are most definitely 327 valve covers their kinda flat on top and they have a place for the sticker that usually says 327
thanks
@@IowaClassicCars if its has a bolt on the damper its a 327 because 283 dont have a damper bolt
My dad purchased a "more door" 64 impala, in 1973 same color inside in out. It was just like a new car condition.
sweet!
Still a nice find, really nice, she sounds pretty strong!
thanks man!
My first car was like this, white 327, black interior plus power brakes. I paid $150 for it from a neighbor back in 1974.
wish you could still buy them for 150 lol
The reason why Mortskie is always pulling starters if because he works on all manufacturers. While you are strictly a Chevy guy. Like a rock brother.
Hahahhaha amen!
Beautiful car. I'm a fan of Impalas, but this one will make a great cruiser.
thanks for watching!
Looks like a 327 /2barrell ,a good engine just driving around town
I don't remember if you said previously that you would like to learn/take on body work. This is the absolute perfect car to do that on. At the end of the day they make replacement quarters for these, so if for some reason it gets worse during the repairs you could cut and put on replacement sheet metal. But I would definitely try to repair it myself.
yes i want to learn body work, youre right, good car to learn on!
Nice I love 64 Chevy Impala, Bel-Air and Biscayne cars except the convertibles... That is one of my dream cars..I get one eventually if I can find one cheap...lol
The fender flag emblems kind of evolved during the 62-64 full size Chevys. I may be wrong but I thought the emblems on this car's fenders indicate that it should be a 327 and that the 283 would be the V without the flags. Considering how bad these cars can be, this car is really nice and with the quarter fixed and windshield replaced could be a respectable driver as is. Really enjoyed this episode. Thanks.
Oh okay! I thought 327 would be on the fender
@@IowaClassicCars it usually is on the fender
283 is just the V8 flag
327 is the V8 flags with "327" over it
Hey Ryan, check out the 59 Biscayne 2-dr on my local Craigs List - Phoenix
@@2001rams thanks will do
Good work! What a nice car! I got a kick out of the ‘67 Chevy lurking in the background. When I was a kid, we had ‘both ‘64 and ‘67 Chevies parked in the driveway.
Best of luck with her! I’ll bet she’s going to Sweden. Damn shame about that quarter!
that 67 was featured last week!
That original underhood shot looked like the original windshield washer fluid bottle was a Pepto Bismol bottle...lmao
lol nah, it is the og bottle though!
Yes, trash those wheels and reinstall the original hub caps. I had those on my 64 Biscayne. I love them.
You can fill each cylinder with oil and let it soak for a day or so but the engine needs to be refreshed.
We All need help on things from time to time. Great neighbor to have. Good job 👍 Ryan.
Thanks for watching steve!
One of the nicer cars that you have worked on, its worth a full resto
Absolutely
Easy car to work on! I would repair the quarter panel. Do a partial restoration where it's safe to drive. If your going to paint the car stick with the original color.
thanks for watching!
Cool car Ryan. Glad to see a 2dr for a change (but I like them all) I personally would love to see you make this car into a tribute to the car in Cheech and Chong's movie (Up in Smoke) the 64 that Cheech drives called "Love Machine" you see so many General Lee, Christine, Eleanor's etc. etc. But how often do you see the infamous "Love Machine " with the classic license plate "MUFDVR" That's what I would do to it. But I am old and grew up with that movie. You may be too young to appreciate Cheech and Chong. Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
I owned a 63 and 64 impala in high-school with a 283 and 327 respectively. I love these cars
cant beat a 58-64 GM
Man there are so many things you could do with that car it's unbelievable quarter panels they sell them I think reproduction or you could try to work with what you have
new qtr panel is en route
Nice rig worth doing up in my opinion, bit of TLC, all the best to yous and your loved ones
Thanks Don!
Glad to see you got it running again. Good job!
Thanks Bart
All you got to do now is bring that motor up to temp to loosen up the rings and anything else that's stuck, in fact, this is no endorsement, but it'd be a good time to consider a Seafoam or Berryman treatment to help clean the top end of that 327 gem. Cheers!
Really like that old Chevy the patina is spot on except for the bang on left side.
i agree
Never would have thought it would run. Nice.
Thanks for watching!
Nice car, the 1/4 is repairable. The shed looks great, heaps of room for your fleet of chevs. Are you planning to get a hoist ? I love mine, never lying under a car again (unless it’s stuck on the side of the road) Keep up the good work.
That's the plan! 2 lifts coming soon
I had a 64 Impala and wish I had not sold it. Yours looks great!
Thanks Ron!
Burned out! When I was your age I worked on cars all day till late late at night. At 60 I can still do it.
Ive done it many times. Workin all day and making 0 prpgress can cause burnout
Happens to evrryone
It's plain silly to believe if you like one make more than another, you can't still like them both. Life long Blue Oval guy here, but I like me some very cool Bow Ties too! Ryan, hoping you checked oil level off camera. You never mentioned it.
i did, first thing i check is oil and tranny level on this car
what a cool car wish we had more here in new hampshire
Score!! Hard work pays off all the time. You better go to church this Sunday.
Lol absolutely
Not saying u don't know what your doing but I'd take the plugs out then try turning ,could be something binding need to pull n flip open bottom end
I would replace windshield with a good used original one, clean up interior make look as good as possible without replacing anything. Maybe try to straighten out the rear quarter panel, maybe can use a port a power to push back out? Outside wash good and wax it up and take it to some local cruise night car shows! Take care Ryan.
thanks for watching!
Excellent video Ryan :) also never give up ever till give up on you they always say also fix up that car and back end that got smack use block of wood in 2×4 and 2×6 us sludge hammer till bang out take some time but worth it! Also fix windshield yes and all need be excellent driver too ! May cost some money but worth it too !
thanks Andrew
@@IowaClassicCars welcome
What a straight clean car. Shame about the damage
It can be fixed
That is a keeper. Repair the quarter the best you can without replacing. Just my opinion
It really is a nice car, even with the bad qtr panel!
I would restore it. It's really not in all that bad of shape. Thanks for the video. Some day soon I'll have a project car.
Thanks Bryan
Cool car, should be a great project to get back on the road. Very original. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
cant beat how original it is!
Excellent video.
Thanks Rick
Don't gave up on it man you got these form Somerset ky
just a hiccup, i didnt give up, just burned out
Nice car and you have some good old friends.
For sure
I think GM kept that double wish bone frame until early 1965. It was subject to rusting out the floor pans here in the northern michigan.Just saying.
yes 58-64 is the X frame
Nice one. The V with the flags on the fenders usually means it's a 327.
Oh sweet nice! I thought the 327 would be on fender
@@IowaClassicCars Only the 409 was called out above the flags. V with no flags was for the 283.
The compression will get better the more you run it. Unfortunately the valve seats will wear out and suck in valves the more you run it on unleaded gas. I'd find a good paintless dent removal guy to fix the quarter panel. You'd be surprised just how good it can be fixed.
Get the heads worked on and replace valve seats to be able to use unleaded.
i hope it can be fixed
This car looks original and interior is in good shape always liked these old Chevys
yup all original
Great find.
thanks!
Used to have a car just like it. Really enjoyed it. I think you should fix it up maybe not show room but just fixed up and looking good.
Good idea!
Nice find man! 🤩🤩
Thanks man!
Small block Chevys sound so good.
yes they do
Mix Acetone & Trans fluid 50/50 put some in each spark plug hole and a few ounces in carb and let sit overnight.
That 1/4 can be saved. Ask me how I know. A few years ago I purchased a 64 Ss Impala that got delivered damaged pretty much the same as yours, on the same 1/4. Thru use od a stud gun, hammer n dolly work the panel was "saved" and repaired with minimal filler used. Just takes time and patience.
Youre right, just takes time
Pop some rod n mains in,maybe rings tired but a mellings oil pump ,new
CLEAN TITLE
Pull valve covers and put oil in spark plug holes
Nice car
thanks Ed!
Would definitely drive it but I would still try to fix most of the quarter panel
.
Nice looking car I'd clean it up do some touch ups like paint the air cleaner ect clean fire wall make it a nice cruiser
Not a bad idea
I'm glad you said that. Those we wheels are ugly
thats the truth lol
Nice 64 fix it original wow you are good
I knew that you were going to get it done.
Thanks!
Drive the car till you are ready to replace the quarter panel, Its a very nice car for sure!!
Good plan!
I like this car. I love the blue color
Thanks man!
Yes it's a 327. At least a valve covers are. And that rectangular space by the aftermarket stickers repop it'll say 327 turbo fire or something like that and they're black and gold. They'll say the horsepower you can run the numbers and figure out which one you have. Of course it's not automatic or power glide so it'll have the hydraulic lifters in it and not the solid lifters which you can tell when it is running it does not have solid lifters in it. Seems like we had to every 20,000 mi adjust to the points after filing them. Just loosen down to hold down both little bit while it's running and adjusted by ear rotating and distributed so slightly. The 283 would say Chevrolet in cursive script on the valve covers that is probably small journal crank 327 which I prefer. It's just in many people preferred large journal 327 cranks. Maybe it's just a year but the air breather looks more like for a 283. Maybe the compression will even out with a few miles and I'm a big fan of Lucas additives. And my day is 64 was king. I always preferred 63 but it has a nut I like to 61 and 62 as well. Glad to see the world's come around to my taste. Still very nice looking car. The place to wind chill they use a quarter like it is and sell the tornado story with the car. I will be emailing you about the 60 four-door Impala I just got side tracked. The sides it's been sitting there for about a long as that 64 was setting. And the rear quarter just adds a little character to it. Doesn't look rusted down below why replace it if you're going to work it out work it out. Or leave it there from the next guy because the paint still original and he can do his own thing with it. Or she can. Thanks for showing us the car
thanks!
The first car I ever restored was a 1964 Impala convertible. Wish I hadn't sold it. But it funded the 1966 SS.
it funded a cool project!
You need Mikey on that breaker bar, my friend!
He moved so hes no longer 4 miles away 🤣
Starter fluid? Great video..lol
nothing wrong with a little ether lol
Please let me know what you are doing with your car, my mom had that exact car. It was stolen from her when I was very young. She always talks about the car and has always been wanting one. She was looking for one before she retired and could never find one that wasn't junk or 40-50 I. I would like to surprise her now that she's getting older. Thanks for sharing your work and time with us.
Tbis car is headed to new zealand
powerglide had no passing response, because you were too high for first gear.
' I think it moved '.........is what George Costanza said.
Love that color combo inside and out. Would be a nice daily or a lowrider daily. Always wanted one a 58,63-73
No lowrider.
@@auaiao9 yes always and forever no matter what people say.
You and me both!
Hey look at the distributor cap to see if the distributor cap is pitted ! You never looked at the distributor cap ! 🤔😱
🙈
Nice survivor!
absolutely
wow..l sweet find
Thanks man
Great video but be careful everyone putting too much stress on your shoulders. I am a physical therapist and have seen a lot of torn rotator cuffs doing that kind of stuff. The surgery and recovery is too much pain.
good point! thanks for the insight!
After discovering that the engine wouldn't turn over with the starter, why wouldn't you pull the heads (easy to do on a small block Chevy) and get a more complete view of what you were dealing with? You'd avoid the risk of bending a valve or breaking a ring or a whole host of other issues. Cranking it over like that puts a lot of pressure on the rod bearings that are most likely dry from sitting. Just getting it running doesn't really make it ready to sell on to the next guy or put it back in to service without begging for more problems down the road.
good job Ryan mate she sounds sweet
thanks Brett!
Fix the quarter panel change the fluids and down the road get it painted the factory color they save your money and pour concrete in that garage great size garage don't want to see the Jack stands sink into the dirt and the car fall on you I had a 64 two door hardtop in high school.
Thanks, concrete is coming soon
Good story nice car 🇺🇸
Right on
Love the car n video!! But get a PDR specialist out to fi the quarter! The Man of steel based in California will be able to give you some good information on how to take out the dent! As he’s got dents as bad, out!! With hisgrea technique
thanks for watching!
