    @soul4feels Před 6 lety +2

    There are different V10 models. Absolute and Animal are pretty much the same, just with different attachments. The Motorhead version has a smaller dust bin and a direct drive brush head where the former has a torque drive brush head.
    Can u explain the differences in the 2 different bursh heads?
    Also, how does it do on low power mode?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, that's correct.
      I recently added a more comprehensive comparision of the V10 sub-models here - moderncastle.com/vacuum-cleaner-reviews/dyson-v10-review/ (scroll a bit down the page)
      The V10 Absolute and Animal use Dyson's newest multi-surface cleaning head, the torque drive. The V10 Motorhead uses Dyson's older multi-surface cleaning head, the direct drive. Dyson's V8, V7, and most (but not all) of their V6 models also use the direct drive cleaning head. According to Dyson.com the torque drive is able to remove 25% more dust from carpets compared to the V8 with the direct drive head.
      From Dyson.com:
      "With a DC motor housed within the brush bar, it transfers torque more efficiently, to dig bristles deeper into carpet and dislodge more dirt. Provides up to 20 minutes of fade-free runtime (in Suction mode II)."
      On the surface, both cleaning heads look the same. During my cleaning tests I did not notice a substantial difference between the torque and direct drive cleaning heads. However, I also don't have a test currently to measure at the "dust" level currently.

    • @soul4feels
      @soul4feels Před 6 lety

      is it possible to order the torque drive and use it with the v10 motorhead?

      I don't believe so.
      Spare parts are normally available here - www.dyson.com/support/journey/replacement-parts/search.180846-01.html

    I wonder if the supplied V10 general purpose powered brush bar head is suitable for loop pile carpets. In the V7 manual, a precaution is given about the use of such a head on certain carpet types, where the brushing effect can cause a fizzy look to the carpet as the roller wears down the carpet fibres, ie the tops of the loops. Dave, Australia

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety

      I would be very careful with loop pile carpets, antique rugs, or any other type of delicate carpets. These types of carpets usually do better with direction suction and no brush agitation.

    • @Meshwork123
      @Meshwork123 Před 6 lety +1

      Modern Castle Yes. And Dyson should disclose this in their advertising, since the V10 head for carpets is power-driven. (Now I have an expensive V7 for floor mats of the car.) Also, retail salespersons should be educated about the different cuts of carpets and what type of vacuum heads are appropriate to use. Thank you, Modern Castle, for getting back to me. Dyson ignores me. 😀

      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety +1

      No problem, happy to help.
      One option for those types of carpets would be to use the mattress tool - amzn.to/2MOfe8Y
      While it is designed more for mattresses, it should work fine for those carpets as well, since you don't have the agitation brushroll.
      Otherwise, you might also consider a canister vacuum, which usually operate via straight suction also. We've reviewed a few canister vacs here if you're interested - moderncastle.com/vacuum-cleaner-reviews/canister-vacuum-reviews/

    • @Meshwork123
      @Meshwork123 Před 6 lety +1

      Modern Castle Thanks so much for those links. The problem with any mattress tool attached to the V7 is that the V7 has no Hepa filtration.
      I do have a Miele CX-1, however, which has a built-in but inaccessible Hepa filter, which is separate to the washable fine dust filter and the other filter parts contained in the vac’s bagless bin. The CX-1 is heavy, unfortunately, and I need to vacuum the bedroom almost every evening. (I have severe sleep apnoea which affects my end stage glaucoma - depressing.) Thanks again. Dave, Australia

      @@ModernCastle I’m sorry I took so long to respond to this! But to answer your question I believe I mean the new fluffy roller or whatever is called. For hard floors. It has a laser light which is actually pretty cool and actually more than a gimmick or just looks. It really does help. Specially in darker places. Or just in regular places. It guides and lights the floor in a way that you know exactly how dirty it is and what and where is picking up. But what I meant was that I don’t need that. I can live without that. For a few hundred dollars less and still get a great vacuum. So I opted for the V10. I’m supposed to get it on Monday or tomorrow. Hi. Could you tell me if the V10’s removable and washable main filter, the one connected to the removable and washable post-filtration Hepa filter, is a post-filter? If so, would that mean that with no other removable filters that the V10’s motor has no pre-filtration? Or, would the effect of the cyclones negate the need for pre-filtration? Many thanks. Dave, Australia.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety +1

      The V10 only has one filter.
      As I understand it, that filter is both the HEPA filter and post-motor filter. Dyson effectively combined the central / post-motor filter and HEPA filter that previous versions of the V-series vacuums had into a single filter for the V10.

    • @Meshwork123
      @Meshwork123 Před 6 lety +1

      Modern Castle I see. Thank you. It appears that the V10 doesn’t need a pre-filter with its cyclonic action. I guess.
      You might be interested in one review that I watched, which stated that one must not inadvertently press the trigger when emptying the bin, as the suction can drag residual dust into the motor and not through the cyclones (with the lid opened). Thanks again. Dave, Australia.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety

      Ah, yeah, that does make sense. Good practice to not use any vacuum when the filters are not installed.

    • @Meshwork123
      @Meshwork123 Před 6 lety

      Modern Castle Well, I don’t think that you can use the vacuum when the filter pack is not installed. It automatically stops power when the filter is taken off, but not so when emptying the bin, where, with an inadvertent pressing of the trigger, momentary airflow would not pass through the cyclones but through the motor - taking in residual dust and potentially causing damage. The bin lid needs to be closed to allow circular cyclonic airflow to occur. Perhaps Dyson should have their next high end model have it that the motor is disengaged when the bin lid is opened, just as with the removed filter. Cheers.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety

      That is true for the V10. If the filter is removed it will not power on. However, the V6, V7, and V8 can be powered on with the filter removed. So be careful with those.

    Why the annual costs? James said batteries should last 15 years. Filter should be good for many years also.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety +4

      Wow, 15 years on the battery? I had not seen that. That's incredible.
      For anyone else wondering where James Dyson said that, you can see him quoted in this article: www.techradar.com/news/james-dyson-promises-15-year-battery-life-for-the-cyclone-v10-cordless-vacuum
      That seems pretty insane to me. I've never heard of a battery lasting that long. I'm going to reach out to a few battery experts and see what they think. But even if just 5-7 years, that would still be incredible.
      As far as the filter goes, I double checked with Dyson's support staff who did confirm the filter as a lifetime filter, meaning it may never need to be replaced.
      We based our original estimated annual maintenance costs on Dyson's previous V-series models (since most V10 replacement parts aren't yet available).
      In any case, based on James Dyson's remarks and remarks from Dyson.com customer chat it would seem annual maintenance costs are going to be virtually zero.
      Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Philip.

      I have the v8 and once I reached 2 years with the vacuum, the battery was giving me issues. it’d turn off within 5 minutes of me using it. dyson was king enough to replace the battery for me, but it surprises me that James Dyson says it’s supposed to last 15 years

    The fluffy brush was designed for carpet but works on everything. The brush you claim is for carpet is, but for reaching dirt deeper in the carpet piles that the fluffy one might not work on. I would not use this abrasive deep cleaning attachment on carpets all the time.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 4 lety +2

      I appreciate your perspective, but what Dyson says about each part doesn't support what you're saying.
      The Fluffy brush is designed for hard surface flooring. See here - www.dyson.com/support/journey/tools/966489-01.html
      According to Dyson's product page:
      The soft roller brush was "Invented for hard floors" and it has "Soft woven nylon envelops debris, while anti-static carbon fiber filaments remove fine dust from hard floors" Dyson never says it is designed or intended for carpets.
      Regarding the high torque cleaning head...again, via Dyson:
      The High Torque Cleaning head "... drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to remove dirt, and carbon fiber filaments capture fine dust on hard floors."

    • @rb.6701
      @rb.6701 Před 4 lety

      @@ModernCastle The high torque cleaning head will be useless for most people on carpets who don't regularly lift heavy weights; I initially assumed the soft brush was meant for hardwood floors and the other for carpets until I actually tried using them. I also have a long pile carpet I would not use the latter on as it might pull it apart. Obviously the Dyson page is authoritative (and I'm taking your word for it), though the Amazon page for the soft brush notes it as being "FOR ALL FLOOR TYPES - The Genuine Dyson Soft Roller Cleaner head for V10 models works great on all types of flooring but specifically designed for use on carpeted floors."

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 4 lety

      @@rb.6701 Could you send me a link to the Amazon page that says that? I'd really like to better understand what they are saying.
      How do you figure that the High Torque cleaning head is..."useless for most people on carpets who don't regularly lift heavy weights"
      The V10 is incredibly light, lighter than any upright vacuum (in fact, it's about 70% lighter than a typical upright). True, there is some downward force, but it's really only notable when on MAX mode and with all of the seal gates descended. Otherwise, the multi-surface brushroll glides along the floor as well as any vacuum.
      In my view, I would say Dyson's V-series vacuums are ideal for consumers who don't don't lift heavy objects regularly. The only better alternative would be a robot vacuum, where you literally don't need to touch it at all.

      @@ryangerman91 Yeah...that's a good point. We should have done that differently.
      Our earlier vacuum reviews made more conservative assumptions about how often to replace filters, batteries, etc. And those assumptions didn't account for a vacuum like this that's designed to last so much longer.
      All that to say, there is effectively no maintenance cost. The battery should last the life of the vacuum, as will the washable filter.

      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety

      1) Redundant - I shot them on the first video and when I went to render them it just felt like a lot of really boring video clips that weren't showing much
      2) Visibility - it's much more difficult to see the debris in carpet compared to the hardwood floors. This is especially true when you get down to a fairly small percentage of debris left in the carpet. Many times it looks clean, but the debris has been buried or fallen further into the carpet.
      All that said, if you think you'd like to see them I'm more than happy to bring them back.
      Would the above issues not bother you?

      The reason we don't do that during our cleaning performance tests is because virtually every vacuum has that ability to do that.
      Not having to use a hose or other attachment is more convenient (in our view). So we try and show how it performs with the most simple test.

    • @jbooks888

      I agree, fair enough. I have an older model with a turbo head and I find the spinning brush flicks some kinds of dirt around the place and doesn't quite pick it all up - say anything bigger than a tic-tac or thereabouts. And things like strings of lint from a mop, for example - the head comes off and they all go straight up the pipe, because I do not want to be unwidning long stringy things from the turbo head. Other than that the machine has been working great for 15 years, but it sure would be nice to have one of these little beauties. Alas the price!

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 6 lety

      Great to know it has lasted you a strong 15 years. That's impressive!
      We noticed a little bit of the flicking as well, but it wasn't too dramatic. When we used the fluffy head it does a much better job of not flicking anything.
