    Just a thought for a solution to charge the Dyson when it has cooled down: Use a cheap $5,- timer socket to turn on at night to have the Dyson charge overnight (may even pay itself back if you have different day/night prices for electricity). No need to deal with cumbersome automation.

    This is really useful, but you have to question why its okay with Dyson for you to be in this situation, when you have spent so much money.
    Needless to say mine is doing exactly what yours was. I only get a few seconds if using it in max. I certainly didn't use max very often previously and it frustrates me that Dyson's advise has been less than clear regarding its use. Basically it is not fit for purpose. If it has a max setting that then slowly kills the battery, you have to wonder if Dyson should be selling it as a model with a max setting, as it cannot maintain this over a reasonable lifetime of the machine.

    I've had the same problem . Machine just over two years old. Dyson have replaced the power pack and the filter unit. I can't complain about that. They told me that I shouldn't leave the charger on permanently (I just put it back in the dock whenever I'd used it) and shouldn't charge for longer than 4 hours. Now got a simple mechanical timer which shuts down the power after a maximum of 4 hours.

    Hi Ben,Thanks for this very useful video!
    But the only first great problem with all these (too) powerful cleaners is that only one range of cells for so many output/amps is not enough . Specially if used with max power, which kills quickly the good cells...and very quickly the chinese cells. All discharge amps are at the limit , and Lithium hates strong discharges, even with good cells if often used and first of all during a long time. Changing 18650 for 21700 is a poor solution.
    The best would be to propose also batteries with minimum 2 ranges of cells in // : much longer worktime and first of all much longer lifetime.( like for power drills batteries)...but commercially totally uninteresting...James Dyson is a clever man .
    I add : don't let the battery connected to the charger (when not used) if the charger is not connected to the main current. In this case the charger will slowly discharge the battery for its own function.
    friendly from France, Michel.

    Kinda sad the little battery costs so much for so little. I have DeWalt power tools and the batteries take a beating indoors and out, keep charging and keep working year after year. For the price of one Dyson battery I can get a 9AH battery and can run my leaf blower or weed Wacker twice as long as this vacuum runs. If they really want to replace corded vacuums they need to get on board with bigger and better batteries.

    FINALLY someone has made this absolutely important video about something that I have suspected is causing problems across all models for so many years . I hv been implementing the concepts in your excellent video & my battery lasts years. Obviously I hv been doing it even before this video. Initially I was also avoiding charging until I've discharged to 50%, in addition to monitoring temp. But your video has taught me that the key issue is temp. This is the single most important information for any dyson owner. Thank you!

    Yep mine died in about 18 months with conservative usage. Now having issues with it becoming smelly and needing a full disassemble and deep clean every couple of months. It can't be used pointing upwards otherwise dust backflows and instaclogs the filter. Two of my motorheads died, third one was about to die (burning smell) when I remembered that means dust is building up around the axle and I was able to recover it with deep cleaning. It cleans well though.

    true story. and there might be more: our 26months old unit came back from service (replaced broken trigger) with a battery that shows red blinking led indicator for battery failure. this unit only had limited use in our home and the battery didn't show any major degradation symptoms before sending to the service which could withhold 4-5 mins of usage with max setting. now that's a very interesting coincidence which i'll never forget for my future purchases. besides, 2 year warranty for a brand that takes pride in its quality products, is - a - joke!

    Makita have a sensor for battery temperature which will shut down the battery or prevent charging while hot, surely dyson should be able to do this. Probably don't want to show up the limitations of the machine. My V7 battery has started to fail ( a bit too soon in my opinion) and I will be doing the makita battery mod when it fails completely. Then I can swap out batteries when needed with a battery system I already use.

    Thank you. Wow, you have gone to significant effort to work-around this Dyson problem. IMO, Dyson should improve the Battery Management System (BMS) to better control charging, so the battery has time to cool down if necessary, before recharging. Some of my cordless tools have chargers that indicate charging delayed as the battery is too hot, or charging slowed as the battery needs to warm up before charging faster, etc. With Dyson being a premium brand, with a premium price, I expect the best from their products. This is one instance where I believe Dyson can do better. BTW, I have a Dyson V10 that is about four years old, no trouble with the battery pack yet.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  Před rokem

      Totally agree. That’s all it would take - a 20 minute delay if it’s too hot. They could even do it with software if they don’t want to add a thermometer - I.e if it’s been running on max over so many minutes, then add the delay.

    I am on my 3rd Dyson since 2017. My first V7 failed, they sent me another V7 under warranty, because they did not have any batteries in stock. The replacement V7 failed within a year. The warranty had been extended and they replaced the V7 with a V10. Great! But now V10 has failed. Meanwhile, my Panasonic plugin I bought in 2003 still works as new. Are we making progress or not? I will replace the V10 battery myself. I did use it on high power most of the time and I immediately put it on the charger when it quit. I will make the changes you suggest. Maybe that will help. As a radio tech, I worked with batteries for 35 years. I am not impressed with Dyson batteries. Dyson had very good product support, but they did not test their batteries well enough for use in the real world.

    @davidleslie949 Před rokem +1

    That was a great video. I love the automation, but there's 1 KeyPoint missing that you may be able to use in your next video ? The key point being lithium ion batteries even this battery in a Dyson has an average 1000 charging cycle life span, This basically means 1000 potentially full charges before the battery's energy starts to deteriorate if a few of my evidence-based factual rules are followed. Basically what I'm trying to say is all batteries should never be charged up unless for some miraculous reason until completely drained, with that being said, they should also not be used until fully charged completely. No interruption from start to finish should occur! If the charge cycle is interrupted The batteries potential energy starts to become depleted prematurely. You made a really good point about letting the battery cool down which is also a KeyPoint as well. The reason being is, all batteries have something called an NTC, which is a NEGATIVE TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENT. This sounds all scientific? Spoiler alert it's really not! You see basically as the temperature increases the resistance decreases so once the battery cools down, it's now at a good state to be charged. For instance your car battery at 0°C loses 40% of its power just like that gone but it's not gone if you simply removed it & brought it inside your house it's back to 100%, just like that! No magic whatsoever just tried tested and proven fact. In reality all batteries have a negative temperature coefficient & must cool down or be warmed up to between 0°C. and 30°C is a good range & 20°C is ideal. The problem is with your automation, which is lovely, but turning on and off the power while charging is counterintuitive to my key point being the 1000 charge cycles per battery average. So each time you interrupt that charge cycle that's another cycle gone out of the 1000 so you're actually decreasing the lifespan of that battery! I promise you what I am discussing with you are all facts! won't bore you with the few things in life I know. I simply just know what I know! I had many battery operated toys as a child but the batteries died quick (cheap parents lol). I was a bit of a SHERMANATOR as a kid to say the least! What I personally do is avoid docking the unit into a powered station. I have and use the docking station but I don't use the power cord. I charge it separately which in turn increases a battery's life span tenfold & only charging it when it is completely dead. No tricking it into getting two more minutes, that's another charging cycle getting lost forever which again decreases the lifespan of the battery. So I guess in hindsight only charge it when it's completely dead & charge it uninterrupted until completely full. Best practice is to wait about a half an hour or at least 10 minutes minimum which is where your automation can come in handy until the battery cools down. Nobody wants to sit around and possibly forget so that that's where your smart plug automation system kicks in while combined with the simple tips I've mentioned? I think your next video might of you working for DYSON, TESLA OR TMMC? Running the battery on high you're right, they backpedaled yes! The heat generated or energy needed or required simply depletes much faster because it generates to much heat which then drains the battery quicker because again the NTC negative temperature coefficient of batteries! All batteries would love to be kept at a cool, 20°C all the time and they would last a lot longer but this is not realistic yet? YET stands for (yours eventually to) I think Mr. Dyson will have some type of heat sink which doesn't draw in air because that would cause contamination, but rather an aluminum fins on the base of the battery which would act as a heat sink further cooling down the battery naturally with the movement of the vacuum and the air flow over the heat sink.Yes, the battery will cost more to manufacture, but it will last up to 20% longer in runtime and lifecycle span. I can solve most engineering problems i feel need to be fixed but I have trouble putting pen to paper. I hear, I forget...I see, I do...I do & I REMEMBER! Take care my friend...

      Lithium cells have a limited amount of cycles, reduced greatly by deep discharge cycles (100%-0%). Unlike NiMh tech from a decade ago where batteries can be "trained" back to full capacity there's no proper way to revive lithium cells. Once they drop below a certain voltage the Battery Management System will stop any current from entering the system as there's a risk of fire. Best tip for longevity is keeping between 80% and 50% charge but this is not so easy to do with a hoover

    Dyson had to change the design on the battery box. For example, Bosch has a cooling profile on the battery box on later models which means that the cells cool faster. Even the older Bosch Batteries without special cooling hold up well. I have a Bosch 18v battery from 2009 - which still works. I do not know why Bosch battery lasts so well. I use them for tools and garden tools. I'm disappointed with Dyson batteries. The first vacuum cleaner which only had 1 speed and 6 min operating time, lasted 5 years which was actually ok. So I bought a Dyson V6 and the battery is 3 years old and is at 40% capacity. I know how to make the most of the life of these Li-ion cells, but if they are poorly made cells you can not do much to make them last long. I'm glad I do not have an electric car, the cells are not good enough and too dangerous for cars I mean.

    1:14. It is true for any manufacturer, that constant max or boost mode will kill a lithium ion battery. They're not back peddling. This is true. Compare it to a car. It has the option to run at wide open throttle and speed down the highway. Is constant wide open throttle good for the vehicle. No!! Other thing is you have heavy carpet. Thats another thing. You don't clean a whole carpet on boost mode. Boost mode is for quick deep cleans 5 minutes tops without the motorized brush head. ( vacuum operated turbohead). Lots of resistance develops on carpet cleaning in boost mode which creates heat. This in turn creates strain on the battery. I've seen people with Dysons that under normal use still work great to this day. The fault lies with owner operator of the equipment. It's lithium ion batteries that pose issues not the machine. Also every so often the cyclone canister should be serviced. You wouldn't believe how much fine dust and dander can gather outside the cyclone compartment due to static cling. ( the only issue I have with these vacuums, they need to engineer an anti-static cyclone system so that fine dust doesn't accumulate and pathogens congregate. It would be wise that they put UV sterilize technology in the canister). There are youtubers out there the circumvent the BMS ( battery management system) by taking the pack apart or jobbers that make adapters for Dewalt or Milwaukee batteries which is a ticking time bomb ready to happen because it bypasses the BMS code system and can pose a fire hazard. If in doubt it's better to be corded. But proper maintenance starts with the owner/operator. I've picked up a lot of cordless Dysons for chump change because of simple maintenance neglect and improper use and they work fine. I find that boost mode is a fad, because on my anemometer you only gain 5cfm of vacuum and a slightly faster spinning motorized brush bar. Regular mode is just fine. Don't use it in vehicles that are heavily soiled. Use a shop vac.

    I think Dyson pulling the plug on corded machines is a bad idea. Now with the lithium ion issue of not being shipped and kyboshed to many countries for battery development. Apparently shortages of lithium ion batteries are becoming an issue. If anything, he should go hybrid on his vacuums. Going to be a lot of disappointed customers.

    It's s common problem. I can't believe that Mr Dyson claims 15 years and people believe this nonsense. They claim these are as powerful as a full size machine, BUT it's only when on Max mode! For only 7 minutes.

    How long do you think the V10 animal will last if you do all the steps to make sure it doesn’t die fail that fast? I’m looking for a vacuum that can last for at least a few years before replacing it since I think cordless vacuums still have a lot to improve on.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  Před 3 lety

      Considering I had been charging it directly after full depletion I think if you avoided that then the 2 years would be easily achievable- but the warranty covered the repayment anyway so you’ll definitely get the two years service (unless they change their position on replacing them!). What I keep thinking about the v10 though is actually how good it is as a full household vacuum - it absolutely replaces any corded machine for us in our 3 bedroom semi-detached. I was anticipating needing to upgrade due to the technology potentially not being good enough to make the concept work properly etc - but I actually don’t feel the need to upgrade to the v11 at all!

      @@marsbars4767 yeah definitely agree. Having said that normal day to day use gets no where near empty. The medium power mode is genuinely good enough so the ‘little and often’ approach at that level doesn’t use up all the power so it would be fine to just chuck back on the dock. That said the Ikea hack does also work well when needed!

    Yes, I’m sick of Dyson’s greed now. I am regularly replacing battery’s for two cordless vacuums that I own (every 2 years or so). I am I no doubt that the battery destroying itself when it is charged when hot is part of Dyson’s planned obsolescence algorithm. To modify the battery to delay charging until it cools would be so simple. All the hardware, including temperature monitoring and processor are already incorporated into the battery. it would just require a software modification I’m sure. But that isn’t in the interest of a moneymaking company is it?

    My thoughts ...If Dyson wanted to produce a really excellent product ...Mr Dyson..ought to look at air cooled chargers, like Metabo or Bosch use ...for their power tools ... supplying a couple of batteries, stops the one battery being precious ...The Sony cells inside the one battery are not custom cells, there off the shelf .. standard cells ... charging bigger more powerful Metabo batteries ...takes 40 minutes max..a Dyson 7 cell maybe 25 minutes, helped by fan cooling ...
    Mr Dyson is far behind, with his charging and Battery technology...their move to click and go battery’s on new generation v11 is good news, battery’s are however expensive, charger is slow, and will not elongate life span ... very basic slow charging...however Dyson is still the leader...watch out a Chinatown man could see opportunity...Tesla or Metabo could make a better model ...maybe ... ric
