Uncovering unconventional wisdom to optimize day-to-day workflows by exploring design and usability.
The Cybertruck DESIGN FAIL No One Is Talking About
As a Tesla enthusiast and someone who has started using a roof top tent for overlanding and family camping I have quite a lot to say about the $3000 Tesla CyberTent. But what's interesting is the reason it exists is because of a staggeringly serious flaw in the Cybertruck design that no one seems to be talking about.

Designing The Best File Backup Routine In the World
The problem is anyone growing up in shoes is basically a cripple. You can't expect someone to get up from a lifetime in a wheelchair and run around like a someone who never sat in a chair before.
What are you defining as niche content? I come here because I enjoy hearing your thoughts on a wide variety of topics, some of which I've never considered before, I'd say that the whole channel is dedicated to niche content, I don't think I could define what the focus of the channel is, as looking at product design and optimising workflows and efficiencies doesn't really have a single lane you can say that "this or that" doesn't fit with the other videos on the channel.
Yeah I think that's a really interesiting point. My niche is actually very hard to define. There isn't exactly an established audience of people who enjoy 'workflow' or just a general consideration of optimizing things. Hard to know how to play it really! I think I'll just keep making videos on things I find interesting and try not to overthink it!
@@BenVallack Yeah, I think I found you when I was making my first split keyboard, it's a shame you don't still do keyboard stuff, but I understand if you've solved your perfect keyboard search there isn't much desire to do more videos on it. I find your views on optimising/efficiency interesting as I have a similar fascination, and I don't mind watching a video on something I'm not "into" because it could spark a new fascination or I could just learn about something I didn't know before. In the realm of stuff that I watch I think you fall into the same category as "Work from hype" though they are purely tech (and mostly at the PC devices), in the "Cool stuff I didn't know about/existed" with an added focus on workflow.
@@gothicchocoboAppreciate the reply thanks. Yeah I'm gearing up for a bit more keyboard content - this is a good example of having to keep things quite broad in appeal. I know that someone who subscribed from a barefoot shoe video probably isn't going to be interested a detailed video on hot air soldering. But, they might be interested on a keyboard video that was more beginner friendly and general information oriented, focusing on ergonomics and the 'stuff I didn't know' element as you suggest. Of course to make that appealing to keyboard enthusiasts as well is an interesting challenge but I do have some ideas!
1) Manual Air pump?! at least use an accessory outlet. 2) The venn diagram of places i want to go overlanding and places with DC fast chargers is 2 separate circles. Maybe that's why the pump is manual, so that it doesn't eat into your range?
Heh yeah - I think the energy it would use would be tiny in terms of range though.
I like the toe box design of barefoot shoes, but the soles are too painful to wear. Also I have fallen arches because my knee alignment is fundamentally wrong. I would need surgery on my legs to correct the fundamental issue. My knee joints will not correct themselves at 68. Barefoot shoes won't help correct, ( or support), my arches, and so don't help to correct my inward toe alignment, which developed as a result of the kncked-kneed-cause pronation, (its not sole the cause just wearing pointy toe box shoes) If only they made wide toe box shoes WITH spongy arch supprting soles I would wear them. My solution is to wear roomy crocs with insoles.

7:20 - "Dog mode and Camp mode are inherent to EVs because combustion vehicles just can't"..... have a camera or climate control in the car? -Dog Mode - A camera in the car. Nothing to do with being electric. -Camp Mode - Climate control... Nothing to do with being electric.
They both keep climate control on. Good luck leaving your engine running in a camp site all night!
@@BenVallack "Good luck"??.. Why? What does your tiny brain think will happen if an engine idles overnight?...SO combustion engines can run for 24 hours straight at 3000rpm driving from Florida to New York... BUT combustion engines CANNOT idle for 6-8 hours at a time without serious LUCK being required? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hate to be the one to tell you, but you have a serious case of EV brain rot. It's when your logic and commonsense are overpowered by nonsense and you start saying things tha tmake zero sense. Oh and good luck getting back from the campsite when you run out of battery 30 miles into a state park.,,, Works both way. 🤪
looks like you deleted your reply or CZcams deleted it. (It wasn't me) Here is my reply: It's not about what's technioally possible, it's about what's practical, socially acceptable and even legal. That's why most cars need their keys in the car for the engines to be running. Most people would consider it a security risk to leave their car unattended with their dog in it unlocked, with the keys in the ignition and the engine on. It's illegal to leave a car with an idling engine on uk roads and if anyone did that on a campsite here they would be asked to leave! Funnily enough people don't like breathing in engine fumes when sleeping in tents!
5:12 the video says "we'll call this step three" if a rooftent has more than three steps I'll look for another 😂
Ha yeah!
The bit kit is called Victorinox 3.0303 and is a replacement for the one included in some SwissTools. Seems like they've moved on to 3.0306 which has a ratcheting handle.
I dont think it would be difficult for them to make either a port w/ a hose attachment that would allow for climate control. I know that would require a change in the build on the cybertruck but I dont see it being that difficult. Cant understand why they wouldnt have considered climate control to a tent a requirement for a vehicle marketed for camping. A model Y to me is a much better vehicle for camping.
Totally agree on all of this. They need to make climate control in the Cybertent and also agree Model Y is a great camping vehicle.
"It doesn't work for me therefore it's an issue for everyone"
I'm not commenting on if it has value for others. I'm commenting on the fact that Tesla want us to think of it for a given purpose -yet it has design flaws for that purpose.
To be clear - if the roof bar issue is never going to be a problem for you then you are the lucky one that gets to enjoy the rest of the Cybertruck! This is a good thing!
Another lovely take on design. Thanks for your in depth exploration across a wide range of topics. If I ever build something I’m reaching out for a consult 😉
Heh thanks so much!
No one was talking about this or really cares, but well done for trying.
😂
I always said this channel was about design, usability and workflow so thought this was actually a very good fit!
Wonderful video Ben!
You are such a great reviewer! I couldn’t care less about this topic, and still watched the video 🤣
Thanks so much!
I haven't seriously considered buying another keyboard since getting my Moonlander. I think my biggest hangup about trying something with fewer keys and needing to rely more on additional layers or clever mod-taps is that I have less visual working memory than a hamster with CTE. I forget where I placed a symbol in the time it takes to alt-tab from my Oryx reference page back to what I had been working on. I'd love if I could ever actually LEARN the other layers I presumably spent a few hours very thoughtfully setting up. I'm sure past-me did a commendable job of designing a comfortable and intuitive layout for the numpad layer I've never used. But if you put a gun to my head and told me to press the dedicated caret key in that numpad layer, I'd say just pull the trigger.
Heh!
Not sure it is of much concern to those of us in UK/EU at the moment given that the cybertruck doesn't meet safety requirements and needs a category C1 license to drive because of the weight. Maybe they plan to modify it and by then hopefully there will be some better third party options. That said, even as a current Tesla driver, I can't see myself enjoying driving this as a daily around English towns and car parks given they are not designed for it!
Yeah it's absolutely too big for here. Also baffled by the pedestrian safety issue - they could at least give it a pedestrian airbag.
Such an odd thing. Some of the technology in the cybertruck is incredible and i REALLY want to drive one. But the thing overall is just too ridiculous lol. Honestly i just wish the other manufacturers would hurry up and evolve. Old, large companies lose their agility and are slow to change though. Im much more tempted by a Tesla car now that the self driving has come along though. Ill probably wait a few more years for things to keep ironing out and maybe lose the big FSD fee. The Teslas of today might be able to really undercut the market as they come out with more new tech in higher end models.
Absolutely.
The amount of people putting roof top tents on their cars must be a tiny minority. It's really not that big a deal. Those people will just buy something else, or get the fancy tesla tent for one-offs.
Yep I'm sure this will be true for the most part but the point remains that Tesla are trying to get us to think of this thing as something it isn't. And it's actually a shame that it isn't - because without being able to take a truck on an off road camping adventure there's not that many legitimate uses for such a thing!
Initially was a big fan of the cybertruck because of how different it was but after seeing many practical-based day-to-day videos like this it does, I'm starting to think the difference is more of a bug than a feature. Excellent video Ben! Love the point of view you offer on tech
Yeah exactly how I came to this too. Unfortunately it just isn't as practical as it needs to be. I find the Rivian much more interesting!
Looks amazing, but unfortunately, it's only wired and for $365 I'm expecting an all-in-one keyboard.
I love trucks. Had several, the current one is an '09 Avalanche. Ok, it's not REALLY a truck, but I USE it as one. Mostly hauling trees, dirt, fish and duck food from Tractor Supply, you know, gentleman farmer stuff. 160.000 original miles, purple flames on Volcano Orange, spinners on 22's, big sound, FJB Edition, Florida...no rust. I have absolutely NO INTEREST in the CyberTruck. NONE. Wouldn't want it for free unless I could flip it immediately. Wouldn't even want it in my driveway overnight. Definitely not in the garage. Tesla's scare me. Thanks for letting me post my opinion. Nokomis, Fla.
I have to thank Elon Musk for single-handedly debunking the idea that tech billionaires are visionary outside the box thinkers and proving that tech billionaires are freaky weirdos who are so self absorbed that they don’t do even the most basic research about the markets they’re trying to disrupt, to hilarious effect.
ha totally!
@@BenVallacktotally?
The original comment was funny and in the context of the video pretty on-point! I actually think Elon is a very valuable addition to the world though!
@@BenVallack If I read more as a joke. Then I like it too :) I just don't like the widely accepted sentiment, that he is clueless... He mentioned himself, a couple of years ago that it might flop. Anyways, thanks for the video. It's thoughtful and has good points.
@@ShaulGoralAgree - I think most people actually recognise that he's pretty remarkable though. At least I'd hope so! It would be very foolish to assume someone like him achieved what he has done through some kind of luck alone!
It's kind of crazy how Telsa has a whole range of cars that are incredibly practical and relatively affordable. And then they have the Cybertuck... a product that solves no issues and in fact makes your life arguably worse than if you had bought any other EV Truck. It feels like Tesla has done a great job of shielding itself from Elon's dumb ideas, but someone along the chain finally let one of his demands through the cracks. I swear this truck feels like Elon drew a triangle on a napkin and told them to make it into a truck. The sheer impracticality of their tent is just mindboggling. For $3,000 you could build out a custom trailer and use it as a remote living quarters/camper.
ha yeah!
most people dont buy trucks to tent, they use it for work or hauling and loading stuff. If you're designing a truck around tenting you'll end up with a van. PS: you cant have a tunnel cover without making it slope somehow (which is huge in the US if you don't want your shit stolen) The design is actually surprisingly very practical. Whether it looks good is another story.
Problems are good. They are moving the engineering. Amazon delivery machines look better for ambulances, deliveries, for travel and for a server on wheels... Sooner or later, electricity at gas stations should start to cost like at home... The more people eat, the more food there is, but not everyone needs that much...😉😇
Agree, but this problem doesn't exist with other trucks, EV or otherwise.
@@BenVallack Cyber truck, it's an engineering joke that got out of control... unlike the amazon electric van.
I've never heard the term 'budget Land Rover ' before
😂 yeah it has the potential to be expensive. I've done a lot to it but do the work myself so that's kept it pretty reasonable considering what an amazing machine it actually is!
reviewing a product you don't have/tried is interesting but I think your points are probably still valid.
That's why I asked at the end if I missed something :) Pretty sure my assessment is reasonable. I'm only commenting on the major issues that are easy to see without owning one. Owning one isn't going to make those roof bars level at the end of the day! (edited to say I replied before you added the qualifier about still being valid, thanks 😊)
Do you happen to have a picture of the two kids bikes on the roof rack? I’m trying to do the same with my kids bikes. Idk the specs of each bike, I just know they suit my son who is 9 and my daughter who is 6.
The small one might just need the wheel holder on the bike rack moving to the other side of the base (this will become clear when you look at it). Other than that they can hold small bikes fine.
This video effectively exposes CyberTent's shortcomings. 👍
I feel a bit bad for making it - I don't usually say something if it's not positive but this seems like something definitely worth discussion!
it's just a meme car, not intended to actually be used
Yeah it does look that way doesn't it! I'd love for that to not be true though!
Imagine if they had rooftop bars of different heights from the roof so that they were level ... 😅
Trouble with that is they're invested in the idea that their bars can go in 4 places all the way down the back - which has utility for items of different lengths etc but rules out the idea of staggering them. It would also mean that any long stuff would be sticking right out the back. Normal cargo does look better sitting flush down the back I think.
Why the heck would it have a manual air pump?!
Crazy right.

just bought a Leatherman wingman and Roxon S802, the Roxon whilst not as polished as the Leatherman is staying. the leatherman the scissors aint up to it.
Not sure if it's the same on the gallery series but I have an LG CX and I wanted to feed the power cable through the Bang & Olufsen floor stand I'm using; The power cable enters the TV through a small access panel seccured with a screw that can be removed which conceals a small connector that can be removed and re-attched if needs be; Not sure what the warranty implications are with this approach though.
That's it! I'm blowing my money on barefoot shoes! I've always walked barefoot outside when doing quick chores, like getting the mail or taking the trash
My feet are shoe shaped, my "big" toe is shorter than the next 2 toes. Shoes are made for me not you, lol.
There are many membrane jackets that are super thin ( and breathe better ) but none of them are durable vs. 3 L standard and that's why the jacket in the video can't displace the market. When buying a 3 L standard .. 1. always go + 1 size for layering but also for an improved venting. 2. never use "wash in DWR" or any DWR that isn't a teflon spray, because a bad DWR WRECKS the performance when dry You think you know, but you don't. I was using Goretex before CZcams was a thing
I just went on a 3 hour hike with my dogs. On the way home, I laid down in the fetal position and told them to go on without me 😂 ha, nah, I crawled home. My legs are DONE.
1. Use barefoot shoes. 2. If the feet hurt ? use an insole or 2 insoles with a +1 size. 3. Reduce the thickness of the insole as you get used to the natural way of walking. 4. Running on concrete isn't natural, correct, so for this purpose you can get a thick barefoot shoe. Don't revert to a raised heel and a sharp toe box because then you have to start over.
They re-branded the moccasin.
Wow, this is the best AWU review video so far, thank you!
