  • This video is (part 3) of a series where I completely rebuild a 2003 Honda Pilot to prepare it for a supercharger installation. In this episode I remove the engine and transmission from the subframe before cleaning and reconditioning it. I also show power steering rack removal and replace the outer tie rods.
Also, I show several methods for removing rusted and broken fasteners.
I hope you find the information useful and entertaining.

Incorrect fluid is the most common cause of transmission issues with Hondas. Honda fluid only. Also, you need to check the fluid level with the engine off, not running. Overfilling the transmission is also a common cause of Honda transmission failure. Additional info here. www.ericthecarguy.com/solving-transmission-problems/

I can remember when I was a young man my brother and I fixed cars in my father’s garage to make extra money. He would always have bolts left over after he finished. When I would question him about them he would respond by saying “Those bolts aren’t needed anyway, the manufacturer always put in more then is needed”. Just a suggestion Eric, next time you can sand blast the head of the bolts too and spray with the same black paint, would look awesome...

This was a tremendous time suck as it was. Given that I'll be using this as a 'winter' vehicle, I didn't feel the need to go that far. Part of the reason I've been doing more Honda 'restoration' work, is to practice for when I do my Type R. I won't be putting rusty bolts on that. I'm considering getting one of those vibration cleaners to handle that work. Thanks for the comment.

That was absolutely epic I wish it was that big of a piece of cake doing it on my CRV but alas it wasn’t it was a nightmare but I did not take the engine out of the CRV so it was a juggling match to get it tilted just enough to get the transmission back in without rubbing on the unibody or frame rails did get it in but I think I suffered a casualty of one of those hydraulic motor mounts and I get a nastyVibration at idle

All hale the scrap yard seat belt!
Every single time I'm at the scrap yard for automotive parts and/or project steel, I harvest as many yards of seat belt material as I can.
Once home, I throw on the walking foot and upholstery thread for the old Singer sewing machine and make all kinds of loop ends for soft-tie dirt and street bike pickup truck bed tie-downs. I also fabricate loops for hanging extension cords, welding leads, air hoses, garden hoses, and anything else of similar length from garage and basement ceiling hooks.
Once your brain becomes conditioned to see seat belt strapping as a tool, the sky is the limit to its usefulness.

And keep the hale going for used tires!
Drill four holes in the sidewalls on each side for water drainage and use them as grocery caddies in the bed of a pickup truck -- keeps stuff from rolling around.
Cut up in to squares, non-steel belted tires make great soft-jaw material for the vise to hold uneven stock or nonsymmetrical parts.
Once again, start thinking of used tires as a resource and you'll be using the rubber everywhere!

I heard you say you were replacing 2-3 of these transmission a day? Good lord I am a fairly new technician still and hearing that blew my mind. I’ve watched you for a few years now and I just praise your work. Any advice for me from you just in general?
Thanks a million for what you do, I aspire to be such a great technician and have leaned so much from you.
