- In this video, (Part 1) of a series, I show you how to remove the engine, transmission, and front subframe from a first generation Honda Pilot. This is my first step in replacing the transmission, servicing the engine, and reconditioning the front suspension and subframe on this vehicle.
I also deal with a broken shift cable on this vehicle and share how I repaired it.
In summary, it’s pretty much everything you needed to know about reconditioning everything that drives and supports the front of a Honda Pilot. I hope you find the information useful and entertaining.

Eric you don’t no this but I’m living my best mechanic life through your video’s! Thank you for your hard work. Be well my friend 🙏😎
I'm happy to oblige. Thank you!
Me too!!!!!
@@ericthecarguy I have a 08 that I drove every day I need replace the rear motor mount the long bolt broke but my issue is that I can't access one of the front bolt easily and I realized that all the muffler flange nut almost fully rusted out can't afford to remove muffler know in the winter. Wonder if I can supercharged mine also in the future. Many thanks to you for your videos it has helped me done a valve adjustment.
Seeing all the obstacles along the way, I think the hero of the story was you, Eric!
Living vicariously through your videos. As a mechanic myself took on a 07 Camry V6 no sane person should be fixing. 250k miles about as spanked as the Hack Hawk was. But it's not about the cost to me, its staying dirty!
Eric found your channel watched one episode and subscribed it’s hard to find a mechanic that teaches and easily makes it understandable with no sexual overtones where my young grandson can sit and learn others sound immature and ridiculous you have become my favorite CZcams mechanic to watch
You saved me multiple thousands of dollars with this transmission swap. legend!
I’m glad you put in the complete adulation of emotion with how much you loved how that self built cart works. I notice you do a lot of reminders I always do like putting bolts back in holes to know where they go and something actually went there.
The "flipping" cart brought you enough joy that it jumped through the screen. :))
That thing is life changing. Even better because I made it myself. I'm just having fun I suppose. Thanks for the comment.
EC I can tell from the gleam in your eyes you really love that cart, awesome having of course followed, I too am happy it worked out. Found myself saying YES! Also when you found that shifter cable abomination as I call them, odd things from previous people who work on things, feeling bad you might have to buy a new cable I said oh nooooo, but then laughed as you welded back together with the shifting arm!!! I'm always glad to see you welding!!! Awesome job, thank you for the video, and hard work you do!!!
Thank you!
I don't know how'd I react to finding bolts left over, but I bet yours is the same joy I feel when finding... 🤔 the holes, the empty spaces "left over" where bolts once were.
I wonder how many thousands upon thousands of dollars people have saved by watching your videos. Really appreciate what you do man.
whomever is gonna get this pilot is getting a great reconditioned vehicle from Eric!
I don't have any plans to sell it at this time.
As if the rear subframe repair and refinishing wasn't enough, watching this video makes me want to go get an older Pilot and do a full rebuild like this. Of course, there would be a lot of money invested in it and a lot of time needed... So maybe not the best idea for me. I'll just live vicariously through you on this project.
We have been doing the out the bottom subframe swap on our race cars for years...lots of fun at the track with an engine hoist, jack stands and plinth blocks. Our record (4 folks working and one play tool fetcher) was 70 minutes. Each teammate had a laminated sheet of instructions, half of which were verifying things the guy next to him was doing from their sheet, and two battery impact guns. True, things like AC system and factory labyrinth airbox intake were gone but still pretty proud of that. My favorite instruction was for the tool fetcher "put all the spare wheels and tires in the trunk". The look of confusion on his face was epic...until he saw where the final location of the jack stands on plinth boxes was!
The used car market is so screwed up, I've gone and done a "frame off restoration" of my daughters Pilot. It spun a bearing. There's so much "may as well replace while I'm here" stuff, it's a new car now. FML Anyway, great video, thank you.
I love your excitement over your cart you made. Great job.
You are the man. Certainly more zen about all the issues than I would have been. Great video. I haven't done anything this extensive, but it was good to see how all the steps were done.
Thank you Eric for this very informative video. I doubt I’ll ever do anything this extensive but still enjoy learning from your experiences. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Happy Holidays!
Thanks for the content/teaching Mr Eric, great video. The engine cart is amazing.
Nice repair on the shifter cable👍. I like your safety comments. We can never be too safe.
nice to see your videos again Eric , thanks for another great video
Very relaxing to watch u work. Great editing and very informative!! Thank u!!
Yo etcg i hope you have a great Christmas sir,God Bless
Thanks! I hope you have a great Christmas as well!
Your pointed air chisel bit on the center drill of the axle works better than a hammer any day to loosen a drive axle.
Not everyone has air tools.
You are a true mechanic ! GREAT JOB
I'm going to be purchasing a Pilot of the same vintage and doing exactly what you did to this one on that! I'll keep you posted on all of the progress (and regressions....for we all know that THOSE WILL HAPPEN), and maybe show some of the progress on YT for you to see! Thank you again for this series, Eric; I miss you and hope to see more regular videos in a new shop soon!!!!
Nice work - fun to watch! I hate changing oil and filter after it's been previously done in a shop. They're either afraid of a leak or want it brought back for the next change because you can't get the filter off.
Erick in 1996ish I was cleaning the inside of a motor/oil pan with break clean to get most of the oil out of the way and went to lunch. When I came back Ben was still standing there looking at the car like it was a demonic Spawn of Satan. He decided to help me and weld the leak in the oil pan and blew both rocker covers off the engine and dented the hood with them lol.
I had a similar thing happen to me. I was doing head gaskets on an old Acura Legend. I had the drivers side head off and was cleaning the gasket off of the block. I also used brake cleaner to clean some of the oil that was on the surface. I wanted to remove the alignment dowel from the block do remove more of the gasket but it was stuck. I decided to add some heat to loosen it up. The brake cleaner ignited and blew the valve cover off of the other head. A huge fireball shot out of the side I was working on and singed my eyebrows. The shop got real quiet after that big bang. I'm still here though.
That hose clamp tool is ba bro best invention I've ever seen
I just did the transmission on my MDX on the floor and I wish I had that dolly. Great video ETCG
how satisfying that engine cart/stand was I love when people have wins!
I can not wait until I can see the next part(s) Great and very professional project!
This was very interesting , Eric The dolly on Wheels is just plain COOL! A great idea& useful /many other things later too........E
Great job on the cart. That’s awesome
A lot of work for someone who hates Honda Pilots lol. Looks good Eric.
Nice! Just in time while eating my breakfast! 😎👍
Can’t wait to see the next video. My son has the same vehicle
Been waiting for something like this. Woot! Bout to gain some knowledge!
Thank you Eric well worth the waiting to watch your wonderful videos I am watching from South Africa
Thank you!
Great video as usual. Don't specifically mess with Honda but allways been a DIY kinda person and find helpful things in all your videos. Old and the newer ones. Do some video stuff myself and don't worry much about the construction background noise. Some things can't be avoided. They aren't really distracting.
He's back!
That cart works Like Butter nice Eric So Smooth @EricTheCarGuy
It really is.
Poor Honda glad Eric fixing it and wow that shift cable was so messed up.
Wow Eric really digs into it 😮
Love that cart you made! 😁👍
Wow is that green painters tape on the Shift Cable just wow Eric @24:53 @EricTheCarGuy
Hi Eric! Greetings from Poland. I realy like to watch your videos at the end of the day, you are doing great job. I am servicing my cars since I finished technical shool (in Poland we have technical degree after finishing four classes and completing them with special exam) I have technical degree of cars servicing, maintenance and exploitation. All of things you are doing are super important like safety, special lubricants, tools etc. I learned a lot about Japan cars from you (US cars are not encountered in PL unfortunatelly, Hondas and Acuras are, but with different names). I see you have continous problems with mess on floor during dissasembly. I am using absorbing mats, these are working great, try some of them, for sure you have good quality ones in US. I am using double-sided tape to hold them in place. One more time thank you and be safe in these crazy times!
Love your videos and suddle snarky comments!💪🏻 Greetings from Norway
Hello Norway and thank you!
I always stretch the seat belt and Wrap it on the bottom of steering wheel loop it and Attach it to the Seat belt clamp to hold steering wheels straight just a tip on what I do the steering wheel Clamp works good also @EricTheCarGuy
Very helpful great show 👍👍👍😎😎 Thank you !
Great job 👏 my friend
Nice one, Eric
Eric _loves_ his little cart!
Thanks Eric the car Guy Love you brother god bless you.
Thank you!
I was just thinking, the child version of myself would have been baffled that one day I would enjoy watching videos like these where somebody is just working lol.
But it's super interesting, and I love it!
Oh Master, Master!!! You are the best!!!!
Fun video! Nice work.
Love your videos
Thank u for all knowledge you give me greetings from Sweden 😄😄🇸🇪
Thank you Sweden!
Great stuff 👍
Great job
Wish Eric was my mechanic !
Just in time for lunch break!
Good video.. love it
I had trouble with stabilizer links on accord v6 07. You have to do the whole vice grip "thang". It was a biatch. Then I used heat, propane torch, and it was butter.
Hey Eric Toyota have them Special Cotter pins Also on quite a few things especially 3rd gen 4runners from 96 to 02 as well as first gen Tacoma @39:00 @EricTheCarGuy
Those are the best in my view. They always seem to come loose when you need them to. And no bending!
@@ericthecarguy I agree they are so nice to work with and never had one give me a issue there used alot on Bell Cranks for emergency brakes on Drums for Toyotas
That.. was awesome.
🤣 Thanks Previous Mechanic! JERK!! I laugh at your comments and recall my similar moments when repairing vehicles.
Been loving the series as I have the same exact car but sadly I'm probably going to have to scrap her as the subframe is rusting out like this one was.
Yeah good job and nice invention home made car for engine and trans 🙏
would love to see a re ring video i think i got my system down but i’m sure i would pick up a few tricks
Good video
Hello Eric love your channel!!! can you make a video on the difference between on working on new cars at the dealer back in your days vs used high mileage cars at your shop. I myself own my shop n would like to compare my feeling vs others. Lol just an Idea out there if you haven’t done one ☝️ lol. I sometimes get frustrated when working on beat down cars but in the end I feel great when the customer is happy with final results.
Good luck 👍
Things like that shift cable are the reason we DIY as much as possible-because the “other guy” always f-‘s everything up!
Hi Eric, loving the videos as always. What was the led light you used please?
Can’t decide which I love more my 04 Pilot or 06 Tundra
Time to rebuild! ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
13:07 Your light identifies as "helpful" haha
😂
45:12 when you’re old and getting out of bed in the morning
Started rowing a boat on that last screw with the motor mounts lol
Thanks!
Thank you!!
I had a pilot that had a rattle after we had done some job that required dropping the subframe. The front right bolt was just spinning. Turns out someone had broken the thread sleeve off. I decided to give it back to the guy who had done the job
That engine trolley is sick
not sure why I am not getting the updates from your channel (yes I have the bell icon clicked )
Surprised you didn't loosen the jam nuts on the outer tie rods while still attached. I also never disconnect the top mounts until all the lower cradle bolts are off. Seems a bit safer to me. Still everything was well done. Personally would have replaced shift cable for peace of mind, but I am sure the weld will be fine. Great video!
I did that on the bench with my vice. I knew I'd be reconditioning the subframe and would remove the rack in the process. Thanks for the comments.
I got a thousand pound lift cart from harbor freight. Works great for this kind of stuff
The last stinking bolt> Row, Row, Row, Row and it's finally out!
If you’re going to hook the transmission back to the radiator I would strongly advise you to replace it, we’ve had a number of Honda vehicles leak coolant into the trans and have had to flush them extensively
If I was going to do it that way I would have tested and flushed it first. However, the reman transmission states that I use their new cooler only, and bypass the one in the vehicle. Thanks for the suggestion.
In this episode, Eric is rowing besides a pilot.
Hey Eric! Can you add a link to those wheels? In search of some good casters
Notification squad!🔥🔥🔥
Nice having a shop to work in beats laying on your back for 5 hours under a car.
Great video, Eric. But man, CZcams is going wild with their mid video ads. I was watching this and about halfway through the video they hit me with an ad that was 36 minutes long. And it was just some guy giving a sermon about characters from the bible and talking about scriptures. And I'm just sitting back thinking : "WTF ?" LoL
Oh on a last note, look into “link ecu” as an ecm replacement so you have the ability to tune the engine to utilize that forced induction. I use one in my odb1 swapped EF hatch.
It won't be possible on this vehicle because of the AWD system. I'll have to use this instead. If it becomes available again. www.apexi-usa.com/products/afc-neo-fuel-management
@Jalopy247 You might want to click the link I provided. Thanks for the comment.
What oil drain station do you use? I need to get another for my shop.
Hi Eric, I like your new shop. I liked this as it being similar to Odysee, I am going to get a front clip of a 2003 odysee and graft it in the rear of a 1990 Nissan Micra. I was hoping to get a turbo v6 engine setup like cadillac's or even use the Northstar motor , the V8 along with the FWD type trans. Of course , would be wiring with the computer. No cross threading involved. Mostly welding.
Well, I haven't moved yet. Good luck with your project.
Watching you spray that brake cleaner without glasses on. Gives me the biggest anxiety. When I was getting my block ready for paint I did the same. And then hit a bolt hole and the spray went back into my face. I was blind for 5 minutes. Had to rinse my eyes for 15 minutes under running water. It burned! Thank god nothing major happened. But yea. Wear safety glasses when spraying that stuff. It may not be bad on the skin but holy crap! The eyes!
Notification squad ☝🏽
I dont think ive ever heard any outside the shop noise. the noise cancelling software might be doing its thing. i kind of wish it would cancel your power tools lol it gets loud and need to adjust volume often
That battery plate annoyed me when I had to take it out to do a starter on a pilot too I saw too it didn’t have to come out all the way too and I was like thank GOD I can’t even really get a combo wrench in there to loosen it easy
