Ford F-250 stuck in defrost, problem solved

  • Air conditioning flow control, often fails on higher mile Ford trucks that use electric vacuum pumps that create suction. The suction system not only controls air zone valves, but also 4X4 activation. Typical vacuum leaks, like old lines are often the problem, but there is one last component that everyone participating on automotive help forums fails to mention when troubleshooting this trouble prone system, the electric vacuum solenoid valve.

      Amazing how many of these have failed. I moved along to a Nissan Titan XD pro over 6 years ago, but still miss my F-250. You'll never guess what component fails on the Titan. An electronic air mix valve solenoid. Very similar symptoms, but a totally different design concept. Proof newer isn't always "better". Somewhere between now and air conditioning season, I'll be climbing under the dash and changing at least one of those (also well documented frequent failure) parts out.

    It may have been mentioned previously but the part number is as follows: Ford Motorcraft # 7C3Z-9H465-A Auto Lock Locking Hub Vacuum Control Valve/Solenoid. This part fixed my 07 F350 6.0L 4x4 exactly the way it fixed the issue for the Yankee Paramotor. Thanks Again!

    @ADVTOURER Před 17 dny

    @Yankee Paramotor you nailed this. My Vac valve failed on my 2000 F350 7.3.
    Some additional info - This valve is responsible for controlling factory style auto engage 4x4 hubs and the AC vent system. If you have converted the factory hubs to a manual-only style like Mile Marker or Warn lockouts, you do not need this valve to engage your 4x4. When this valve fails, unplug the vacuum connector on the solenoid valve with 2 ports and plug both ports with an appropriate sized bolt. The red vac line is the one responsible for switching the HVAC vents. With this plugged, you will no longer have a vac leak and your AC/Heat vents should now switch.

    Thanks for the video, my 2002 f250 has been stuck on defrost for 3 years and the auto 4 wheel drive has never worked since I bought the truck new, I always had to lock the hubs manually. After watching your video I called the ford garage and they quoted me $321 for the solenoid and a new vacuum pump. I got them on line at am autoparts delivered for $91, just put them both on and I now have cold ac coming out the dash vents and the 4wd locks in without having to get out and lock the hubs. Thanks again for posting your video.

Those and this one had been on my "channel", because I'd never expect my topical channel to gain the popularity it enjoys specific to paramotoring. I'd recently changed the name of my public presence, in attempt to more narrowly target that audience of paramotor enthusiasts, but know that this vid has helped a huge number of people, so I'd left it in the mix. Thank you this was the fix for my 2001 F250 4WD v10 - my problem started during the summer when I noticed cruising down the high way the A/C was only coming out the defrost, oddly when I came to a stop I noticed it would go back to the vents. This when on for a while until the winter where now it would only blow out the defrost vent. I found this video most helpful, as all the options were covered. I first looked for the vaccume leak that led me to brittle hoses down to the hubs they were bad, i never even knew I had them, I replaced and like the video said it worked for a bit again but only at standstill when RMPs got high or on the road it would go back to defrost vents, when I replaced the vacuum solenoid it now all works. I got the one on Amazon for 40 bucks, mixed reviews but the OEM is 90. Will see...tried to buy at autozone they tried selling me a door actuator for the vent...and argued with me i was buying the wrong part...left ordered amazon had it next day...working fine...nice and toasty out the vents. Thanks again

    Thanks you so much sir you saved us a ton of time out in the Texas heat and money. However I found that the part for my truck wasn't called EGR, for my 2001 f350 7.3L it was called a vacuum actuator. It does the same thing its just a different name I guess. But anyways I thank you very much!!!

    This is why I love CZcams. My friend, you are paying it forward with this video. I like you humor as well. Whether you realize is or not - you are hilarious. If we lived close and you liked beer, it would be my treat. I feel your pain with eliminating all the possibilities... and all I need to do is buy a Vacuum EGR Solenoid and install it. I even know what it looks like and where it goes. Too easy. Thank you bro.

    I just fixed this problem on my 2002 F250 with 7.3 and no A/C, it was the vacuum line that runs from the pump to that plastic canister, just popped it back on and it now works perfect.

    That is a very unlikely culprit but I’m glad you found the problem. 99% of the time it is always cracked vacuum line. Those cheap plastic lines they put in all vehicles are subjected to harsh winters and hot summers, it gets brittle with time and cracks. Even a pinhole size crack will divert all your vent selections to defrost as a failsafe. I found two cracks in my 2006 F250 lines, one of which (the hub vacuum) was melted completely against the engine block. The cheap plastic wire cover they put over the vacuum lines don’t do anything. The other was the air reservoir to the egr vacuum that you pointed out. I cut the vacuum line cracked areas and put some cheap rubber vacuum line over them, works like a charm. When I had to take the wheel well inner fender out to get to the compressor, I had to unbolt that air reservoir right above it. When I did that, the plastic vacuum lines cracked. Any cars that are 15+ years or older will start to see these issues no matter what make or model you have.

      @YankeeinSC1  Před 3 lety +1

      well I have no idea what you're talking about. The F-250 was still the best vehicle I have ever owned. The lines you speak of are not "cheap plastic" as you indicate on the F-250. They are nearly indestructible, high pressure, hard as steel tube, die drawn, space aged, impact resistant super material. They run through harnesses and isolators and near as I could tell they are 100% resistant to salt corrosion, solar degradation and auto fluids. The problem you describe may well be true on other vehicles but it simply isn't the case with the F-250. I deeply regret having traded mine in for the Jap-engineered-mentality Nissan, Titan POS, even though it does have a rock solid power plant with the Cummins 5L. Should have kept the F-250, sprung for new vinyl "TRUMP 2020 - No more bullshit" motif wrap and added a decent stereo bluetooth nav system.

    your video led me to my fix... a/c not cooling properly and defrost defaulted to on... checked vacuum pump..it was ok.... but noticed the pump was running intermittently so I knew there had to be an issue some where..started inspecting vacuum lines that I could easily see... discovered the line that apparently controls the hot water valve going into heater core under the hood next to oil fill was actually about to break. Used a 5 inch piece of my drip line from my garden irrigation system to fix. air comes out of vents at 52 degrees now so I suspect the broken line was allowing hot water into heater. 2007 ford f250 king ranch.

    • @YankeeinSC1
      @YankeeinSC1  Před 8 lety

      Awesome! I did not previously know the heater core flow valve was also tied in. I guess a good system schematic might also help, but there are so many that claim to have fixed their system when even dealers couldn't, why spend the money on a manual that may not even offer the fix?
