I am learning Portuguese so that I can communicate effectively when we visit this May, and so that I can integrate with and contribute to Portuguese society and culture when we immigrate permanently (hopefully by the end of this year). I will feel confident and at home when I am able to understand the super-rapid Portuguese answers to my halting Portuguese questions :-D
Hey Liz, actually my father is there in lisbon (Portugal) for 2 years and we are also planning to move Portugal in between 3-4 months that's why me and my family is learning Portuguese from various apps and from social media also 😀
I am learning Portuguese because I have plans to move there in the future and want to be able to have basic conversations while out and about. I do have Portuguese friends, but I want to be able to go shopping on my own without a translator.
My ancestors are from Portugal, so I want to learn Portuguese so I can be able to visit the country one day & communicate with new people, and possibly live there in the future. Portugal was never really on my bucket list but, after finding out more about my roots, it’s definitely a place I want to visit! It’s so beautiful!!
i am learning portuguese because i want to be able to communicate with my friend carol in both her languages. i will be happy and confident when i can have conversations with her in portuguese
I’m learning Portuguese so that I can connect with locals and build relationships when I move to Portugal. I want to feel confident and not paranoid going about everyday life, immersing myself in Portuguese culture.
I think to fall in love with the habit and not get obsessed with the results is really good advice. It's true, if you're enjoying it you will stay motivated and progress will happen naturally.
The first useful phrase my Brazilian fiancee taught me for those times when I'm waiting for her at a store and someone tries to talk to me : pergunta minha esposa !
Liz, this was a tremendously helpful and encouraging video. I will share it far and wide. We'll be in Northern Portugal for three weeks in May---as a "test-run" for a planned permanent move by the end of the year---and your clear, concise and joyful videos have really helped to reduce our anxiety about learning another new language (we both had to learn to speak a second language when we were young, but it is a bit more intimidating when you are in your 60's!). Muito obrigado!
Liz you are still and always will be the best at helping us learn European Portuguese! I'm on a personal hiatus at the moment but hope to return soon. Keep on doing what you do! Tudo tão grandioso!
Hi Liz! I'm brazilian and I watch your videos in order to improve my listening skills in English. Your Portuguese is amazing. The first time I saw you at the Leo's channel I had difficult to understand that you're not a Portuguese native speaker. Congrats for the videos.
Eu quero aprender pra ter mais oportunidades de trabalho mas eu estou aprendendo português brasileiro, anyway, eu adoro seus videos e aprendo muito também
Hi Liz! I'm so excited to begin my journey with learning Portuguese and eventually retiring in Porto! I lived in Mexico City for 12 years and I'm so grateful that I have retained my pronunciation and knowledge of Spanish. But even more so is my next chapter to enjoy my life in Portugal.
I'm really grateful for your videos, Liz; I live in Coimbra part time and am learning Portuguese for the citizenship exam in 5 years time (A2). I've found Portuguese really difficult compared to Spanish and French w/r/t understanding. I can hear Spanish easily, but Portuguese is a real challenge b/c of the closed vowels and unusual plurals. Thanks so much for your pragmatic approach.
Thank you James, I'm so glad! Feel free to check out my free lesson for beginners, I think it could be helpful: www.talkthestreets.com/speak-portuguese-like-a-pro
I’m learning Portuguese because I hope to soon live and work there as a physician. My sister Tracy is learning as well and we are looking forward to exploring the beautiful Portuguese countryside next fall. Your site is just great - clear, right to the point, very informative. Thank you!! Lisa & Tracy in Fly Creek, New York. ❤❤
Estou a aprender português na faculdade e quero aprender português porque eu adoro a língua e a cultura de Portugal, comecei desde o setembro passado e adoro o seu canal, obrigada pelo seu conteúdo útil (:
Wow excellent this should be your #1 mandatory starting video, a structured strategy. Step 1., basically writing out a daily learning affirmation, creates a proper mindset. Last year I found you via the Expats Everywhere folks and I have a dream goal to get to Porto and Madeira this year, but no serious action plan just yet. Maybe I won't be totally conversational, but at least thank you for teaching me to smile in Portuguese. Best regards!
Im so glad I’ve found you!! I started learning Portuguese last month and it’s been so difficult finding somewhere to start, I can’t wait to learn more with your channel❤ Beijinhos ♡
Hi Liz, love your tips on learning Portuguese💛. I'm from Goa, India. A state once ruled by the Portuguese and would love to learn the language that my ancestors once spoke. Hoping to learn the basics and some day master the language, just like you did. 😇💛
You can learn to be fluent in a short period of time. It depends on several factors of course; how motivated you are; the reasons for learning; actually wanting to learn. (I learned how to speak in just 6 months and surprised everybody). Obviously you may not be able to talk about everything, just the things within the scope of your daily life. Shopping, small talk with friends etc. My goal was set after I saw an English girl speaking Portuguese: I wanted to speak like her! (I actually ended up speaking better than her) My motivation came on strong when I was told I would never learn - never tell me I can't do something...lol. That was 30 years ago! When RTP only had 2 channels. Goals will change for the individual.
I am learning European Portuguese because I want to be able to communicate and understand my family and even if I reply in English I want to start out with being able to understand what they’re saying to me an app that I found pretty successful. There’s an app called drops if you don’t want to do the premium version, you can practice for unfortunately only four minutes a day but you still get the practice in and it’s pretty beneficial in my opinion.
I want to learn Portuguese so when I travel to Portugal in two years I can communicate confidently with everyone I meet. I discovered that I’m 21% Portuguese. I’m a native Spanish speaker and I don’t want for my accent to sound like Spanish nor English for that matter. Thank you for your fabulous lessons; I just started the basics and I’ll be dedicating an hour or two daily. ❤
Terrific video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.
Pronunciation is without doubt the first step! If you don't start with that you will keep making and correcting the same mistakes for years. 20 years of experience for me has been bugged with these errors, because I didn't do what Liz states here. I had no online resources when I started, but wish that I had
Liz. I Just signed up for your webinar intro. See you later. I moved to Portugal, Algarve with my wife last November. She is so much better at the language than I am. My goal is to be able to comfortably speak and understand in day to day conversations and also on the phone and write down notes.
Liz, I'm scheduled to talk with you on the 7th regarding the Portuguese Pro program. I'm looking forward to that discussion. My wife and I are going to holiday in Portugal in late April/early May. I'm looking forward to seeing the country for the first time and seeing if we are comfortable for this as a retirement destination. My wife is a Swedish citizen so maintains her EU status (I'm a US citizen). My business life took me to many different places in the world. Portugal, Greece and Ireland are the only Western European countries I've yet to set foot into. I also have extensive travel in Asia, New Zealand and Australia. Local culture and lifestyles have always been fascinating for me. Thanks for doing all this for your students! Your enthusiasm always shows through.
I am learning Portuguese because I ll be traveling to Cape Verde by next month. I heard that it is their official language. I ll feel so glad to learn it here
I’m learning Portuguese so I can connect and form lasting relationships with locals when I move there. I will feel confident and at ease when I am able to converse with those who speak the language.
Estou a aprender português por isso quando a simpática senhora do snack-bar em Vilamoura me diz que não há prato do dia ao sábado ou domingo, não vou continuar a pedir o prato do dia.
Thank you for your videos and motivation. I have been learning for the past one year and after watching your videos I have been trying to speak and making a lot of mistakes but I still feel I am getting there slowly. Watching tv and listening to videos has also helped me. 🥰
Great, thank you. After 2.5 years of wondering where to start and putting it off, I am finally getting started! My goal, pass the A2 language test in 2.5 years!
I am in Portugal and I am learning Portuguese for conversation with my friends and able to speak it your video helped me alot 😊 Thank you so much Muinto obrigada
My childhood friend is prtugese and 3 years ago moved back to Portugal everyday we call and I would love to learn Portuguese just to generally Inpress her
I was not expecting the English accent judging by the thumbnail haha I totally thought I was going to get hit with some Portuguese accent. Great video :) thanks!
My daughter and I are planning to visit Portugal in the fall and I'd like to have some basic words and phrases down, partly to be polite and partly because it's a good way to exercise my brain.
Hi Liz. Always coming up with helpful tips + links. Thanks always. Children's programmes is a good tip for beginners, then also moving on to news channels - I think listening constantly or at least 30 minutes a day is a good habit. When I was down in Portugal last Sept (I can speak basic Portuguese so I know to speak what I want ) my problem is when they reply back I either don't understand (can't tell them to speak slowly) or I misunderstand what they said. I think there is no simple trick for me. I guess listening more to TV serials (for eg on RTP) would be the solution for me. Any other tips in my direction would be handy. Thanks
I'm learning Portuguese because it's the native language of my GF 🥰 I want to be able to suprise her with it. I'll be happy when I'm on top of my pronunciation
This video made me laugh a bit. I’m told constantly that I say “sorry” too much. When she said we need to make a list of words we use on a daily basis “I’m sorry” was the first few words that came to mind.
I am learning Portugese because I will feel very very happy when I will be able to speak to my boyfriends parents one day! It would be a magical feeling to achieve!! I am Swedish/British btw :)
Just booked a long weekend in Lisbon for my 50th birthday in a couple of months. Better late than never to try and learn a few basics. Been learning Greek for years, last time I was in Spain I kept panicking and speaking Greek... Watched a few of your videos, going to aim for half an hour after work and hope to surprise my partner by knowing even a little before December. Enjoying practicing so far ;)
I am learning Portuguese to be able to speak to my Brazilian girlfriend who knows English, but I want to learn her language too. I will feel happy when I can understand her when she's speaking Portuguese and that she will feel more comfortable when she moves to England
Love this! I have textbooks, I have a portuguese partner, duolingo, everything, but I don't know where to start! Funnily enough, the thing I am most proficient in so far is ordering pizza, because when I visited my partnet while he still lived there we ordered pizza pretty regularly, and I learnt the ingredients. I just need to learn to speak so I can speak to his wonderful family!
Hi Liz! I am learning Portuguese as I intend to work there and maybe settle down, since it's a beautiful country, with good climate, long historical and cultural heritage. ❤
I am learning Portugese because my dad grew up in Macao, and one day when we were on holiday in Lisbon, he started speaking Portugese to two complete strangers, who at first, chatted with us in fluent Cantonese! Dad's gone, but I hope to pick up his linguistic legacy and make more friends in London from europe and south america! (hope it's not too late to start!)
I wanna learn Portuguese because I'm from Goa, the state in India that was rules by Portuguese for more than 60 years and growing up from my Catholic Portuguese grandparents, it was our mother tongue. Sadly over the years by the time my generation was out there it changed to English and konkani, so it's my dream to go speak to my older uncles and aunts and show them that it's still in my ❤️.. My journey begins with you today.. Note: The native language we speak is konkani which is mixed with Portuguese words like mez (table), kodel (chair), obrigad, susegad, madrina, padrina, caldin and lots more..
Why? Because I am moving to Portugal within a yr. I would like to be able to comprehend as much of a conversation with the locals once I arrive. I feel it will make my time there and basically living better. Plus, I want to challenge myself in learning and understanding the language and culture of my future home. I'm extremely excited. Thank you for you assistance and caring. Portuguese is such a beautiful language and I am ready to learn everything I can.
Hi Liz, i am happy to have found you.i am learning to communicate with my in-laws in mozambique.i want to be able to understand them. and be able to use public transport and visit the praia on my own.
I can read portuges and understand it but when someone speaks it I'll get very confused as to what they are saying 😂 I'm really looking forward to learn this beautiful language! I love the culture and I wanna visit the country and be able to have conversations with the people there.
I am learning Portuguese because we moved to the Azores and it will be fun to interact more with the locals. I used Drops diligently daily until when using in public found it's not how people speak! Thank you for all the great and helpful content you provide.
My dad is Portuguese and my grandparents were from the Azores. I want to learn Portuguese to be in touch with my roots 😊 and I plan to visit Portugal May
This is so beautiful. Thanks Mme I just came to Portugal mid September as an international student with zero knowledge in Portuguese so I wish to learn in other to belong and have “google translate-less” conversations. Also I am here so why not learn a new language 😊 . Thanks for this wonderful video muito Obrigada
Im learning Portugiese so i can talk to my bf's mother. She doesnt speak german nor english really, so i really want to learn it atleast in a way that i can have small conversations with her and my bf wont have to translate everything for the both of us. I would feel so much more confident meeting her by greeting her in her mother tongue. Thank you so much for your videos.

Thank you, thank you, and thankyou. You're video blog is very helpful. I have been looking for a challenge and learning a new language. I live as a vandweller and looking to travel in Europe. My main Goal is like you say, to be fluent and confident when asking questions. And the locals, I am sure they would appreciate the effort 👌
Liz, I would like to learn Portuguese to be able to converse with people in practical situations like in a cafe or to ask directions or information about renting a home or going to a restaurant where there is live music. Above all, since I'm a Jazz singer back home, I would like to learn to sing Portuguese tunes with the accurate pronunciation.
Olá, that's awesome! My channel is the perfect place to get started, I have tons of videos on practical situations :) I also recommend watching my free lesson for beginners: www.talkthestreets.com/speak-portuguese-like-a-pro
I'm learning European Portuguese as I recently relocated to Lisbon a few months ago. The locals here are so welcoming that they initiate a conversation and I go dumb. I definitely wanna progress in terms of social connections. And I so resonate with you when you mentioned Duolingo Brazilian Portuguese in one of ur videos for I realised it almost after advancing the beginners level on Duolingo. That's frustrating.
Great Video! Thank you very much. I had no idea how to start learning Portuguese so this video is very valuable. At the moment I do not know a single word of Portuguese and hope to be able to communicate at a very basic level.
Hi Liz me & my husband came to live in Central Portugal over 3 yrs ago we've been busy building our home & not had a lot of time to sit & learn Portuguese although I was learning from duo lingo then found out it was Brazilian Portuguese but that said I learned alot of useful words & did indeed put stickers around the house & I did learn them, stickers in the cutlery draw on the cooker bathroom door etc. We started going to lessons in Sept but they are not going well at all, I feel it's too advanced I was expecting learning from a 10yr old level, a few of us have complained but it's going on deaf ears, two students walked out this week they were so frustrated that were not learning anything so Me & my husband are going to give you a try. We're looking forward to the challenge.
Oh dear! I'm so sorry to hear that - please take my free lesson for beginners linked in the description, I think you will find it helpful! I'd love to help you out!
I decided to start studying Brazilian Portuguese. I prefer it to European Portuguese personally. Ollie Richards also speaks fluent Portuguese for a Brit.
Hi Liz, thanks so much for all your videos😍 I've been reading a short news story each day on the free version of Beelinguapp - with the screen split to show Portuguese above and English below, so I can check I understood correctly 🙂 beijinhos😘 Trish
Hi, I will be living for 2 months in the Algarve beginning this year. I would like to follow payed lessons as a complete beginner. I speak and read: French and Italian
Comecei há muito tempo a aprender português por causa do fado, só para perceber o que se canta num deles. Ainda não consigo fazer isso, mas espero que, nos próximos cem anos, vou alcançar o meu objetivo. : (((
I need to learn for work. My clients are 80% Portuguese and would like to speak to my clients in Portuguese. Do not have time to go and take classes. Have to be able to learn online, and have my ear pod in my ear to learn while I am working.
Why are you learning Portuguese? What are your goals? Tell me below!
I am learning Portuguese so that I can communicate effectively when we visit this May, and so that I can integrate with and contribute to Portuguese society and culture when we immigrate permanently (hopefully by the end of this year).

My goal is to learn Portuguese to converse with natives . Thank you so much for your advise ❣️
I just moved to Porto from Denmark, this is my first time actually trying to learn it. I hope you have plenty of more videos!
I do! Over 100 on this channel!
Hahaha !!
This really cleared the way for me, I feel more structured now! I want to visit Portugal so bad and I want to be able to speak with the locals!
Thank you for your videos and motivation. I have been learning for the past one year and after watching your videos I have been trying to speak and making a lot of mistakes but I still feel I am getting there slowly. Watching tv and listening to videos has also helped me. 🥰
@@thelanguageunschool yes I do read the newspaper online
@@thelanguageunschool I did not understand what you meant
Great, thank you. After 2.5 years of wondering where to start and putting it off, I am finally getting started! My goal, pass the A2 language test in 2.5 years!
I am in Portugal and I am learning Portuguese for conversation with my friends and able to speak it your video helped me alot 😊
Thank you so much
Muinto obrigada
Happy to help!
Fantastic!
Hi liz, Im learning to comfortably communicate with my boss and customers at my new jop, I work at a restaurant
Thanks
Yess focus on listening have you tried Euronews? They have videos and transcriptions. Check out my yt video on listening!
To be honest, if you wanna learn Portuguese I believe that living in a Portuguese speaking country is the best way 🇵🇹💕💕💕💕💕💕
I'm learning Portuguese because it's the native language of my GF 🥰 I want to be able to suprise her with it. I'll be happy when I'm on top of my pronunciation
you've got this!
Love it Hanna! Boa sorte!!
You can do it!
I had to go back three times and put subtitles on because I kept hearing 50 years! No way!!! 15 years seems more likely! 😆
Yes I am infact 65
@@TalktheStreets 😄👍 a video on how you age so well is in order!!!
Good lord, I'll die of old age before you get to something useful!
I'm learning Portuguese to communicate with my husband's grandmother, who I absolutely adore before she passes.
That’s lovely!
Hi Liz! I am learning Portuguese as I intend to work there and maybe settle down, since it's a beautiful country, with good climate, long historical and cultural heritage. ❤
Best of luck! :)
Thank you so much for your channel. Greetings from Poland!
I am learning Portuguese because we moved to the Azores and it will be fun to interact more with the locals.
I used Drops diligently daily until when using in public found it's not how people speak!
Thank you for all the great and helpful content you provide.
You are an absolutely amazing teacher. Love watching you teaching Congratulations .
My dad is Portuguese and my grandparents were from the Azores. I want to learn Portuguese to be in touch with my roots 😊 and I plan to visit Portugal May
So cool! My free lesson for beginners is a great place to get started 😊
This is so beautiful. Thanks Mme
I just came to Portugal mid September as an international student with zero knowledge in Portuguese so I wish to learn in other to belong and have “google translate-less” conversations. Also I am here so why not learn a new language 😊 . Thanks for this wonderful video muito Obrigada
Thank you, my bff is Portuguese and I am starting Portugese lessons. ❤
Perfect, as always. Thank you so much, Liz!
Woohoo thank you!
CZcams started 17 years ago in 2005 :-p
Im learning Portugiese so i can talk to my bf's mother. She doesnt speak german nor english really, so i really want to learn it atleast in a way that i can have small conversations with her and my bf wont have to translate everything for the both of us. I would feel so much more confident meeting her by greeting her in her mother tongue.
Thank you so much for your videos.

Thanks Liz! Heading to Portugal for vacation and would like to be able to at the very least say hello, good morning and thank you! Appreciate it.
Good luck!
Muito obrigado! I love Portuguese culture and am looking forward to learning more.
Absolutely spot on content! Am learning Portuguese as I will be visiting in October and hope to retire there on a D7 visa early next year!
That's frustrating.
thank you for providing so many tools!!
Glad you like them!
Im learning Portuguese because i want to be closer to my Portuguese family. I will feel good when i accomplish this goal.
you've got this!
I have a friend from Brazil. That I’d love to learn to converse more with
Wow someone who tells the truth! Time and study time and study, be patient. Qualquer peossa pode falar portugues mas tenha quefazer uma esforca.
Am learning Portuguese for easy communication with my friends and Neighbors

Eu falo português nativamente e adorei o vídeo!

Wonderfull human being.
RTP is so much better since most of the Portuguese audio options on Netflix are Brazilian. Very cool ideas, your suggestions are on point.
True but there is more and more content on Netflix now that is EU Portuguese!
Muito obrigado, Liz! A teu licao e muito util! 👍
Im lerning now
You good at lectures in English.
Very informational video, thank you!!
I need to learn for work. My clients are 80% Portuguese and would like to speak to my clients in Portuguese. Do not have time to go and take classes. Have to be able to learn online, and have my ear pod in my ear to learn while I am working.
I am learning it because I am going to move there in like a week
