East Carolina walk off home run denied when ump calls time; coach ejected

- East Carolina's Justin Wilcoxen hits what appears to be a game winning home run for the Pirates in the bottom of the ninth inning vs. Bryant. At first, the question is whether Wilcoxen's ball is fair or foul. Then it's revealed the first base umpired called time during the pitch. East Carolina coach Cliff Godwin is upset about the home run being denied and argues with the umpires. Godwin is tossed from this game. Wilcoxen comes close to hitting another home run, one that counts, but his deep fly ball is caught, 2/19/22.
Bryant ends up winning this game in 10 innings, as the Pirates were swept in this three game series.

A player cannot call timeout, he can REQUEST a timeout, only an umpire can grant a timeout. Furthermore, timeouts cannot be called or granted by an umpire when the pitcher is in his windup. Although we have seen this rule violated several times in baseball.
The first base umpire called time for reason unknown.
@@jonnydanger7181 Reason unknown my ass! He called it after the hit to nullify it and change the outcome of the game.
@@marco529 Right...... because U1 totally knew the result of the hit before the ball left the bat.
@@jonnydanger7181 From what I heard, the first base umpire called timeout because he had dirt fly in his eye. It’s absolutely bogus that the timeout stood considering it caused no disruption to the actual play. The pitcher and batter were both locked in.
@@SportsAndHorrorFanatic yeh it’s crazy and a valid argument for both sides.
Lol. Another example of an umpire ruining a game…. 🤷♂️
Compared to the millions of other examples of umpires doing their job well. Always easy to jump on the 1 or 2 mistakes an umpire may make in a season. We all make them, it happens, but 99% of the time, even when an umpire blows a call, it doesn't determine the outcome.
Unfortunately your wrong about blown calls determining the outcome. Watch this video. Crew chief should have corrected the call. And 1-2 mistakes a game is dramatically incorrect. Most 1st base umps do that a game. Home plate umps do it just shy of a third of the time at the major league level at 100 pitches. Video reply was not needed here. They got screwed. It happens.
@@ronsnightmare I guess I should clarify, the mistakes I'm referring to are not the bang bang plays at 1st or the few missed balls or strikes. I didn't think that would need clarification, but I guess I was wrong. And most calls that are missed, are usually earlier in the game, not in the bottom of the last inning, thus I stand by what I said.
@@ronsnightmare As far as them getting screwed, yes, I agree there. U1 shouldn't have called time out even if he couldn't see due to the sun. Just hold your hand to block the glare and do your best. If the sun is that bad there it is unlikely you will find a better position to call from, unless you go to position B or C, which in a 3 man crew isn't anywhere near where he is supposed to be.
@@jamesmartin4518 you want a reward for doing your job correctly? Lol. Congrats on getting MOST calls correct.
Dude almost hit 2 Homer's in the same at bat
Unfortunately Bryant won 5-4 in 10 innings.
No reason for 1st base official to call time there... pitcher was already in motion & umpire at home didn't see any reason to stop the game.
I always thought it wasn’t a timeout until the home plate ump recognized it! Hitter, pitcher, can’t see him at first. Guaranteed the defense would of objected if it would of been a ground out!
Any umpire can declare time
I do believe the U1 called time because he couldn't see and was trying to reposition before the pitch. I'm pretty sure there was a post game question about this and that is what he said.
@@INYB before play only. Pitcher starting delivery is not dead play. The fact that plate ump did not recognize it by stepping back also means it was after delivery. This is bad. Worst then the pre determined nfl refs.
@@jamesmartin4518 you’re right. I saw this before and that’s it!
I'm concerned about NCAA baseball umpiring
These guys are stoned
They are awful. First base ump calls time after the pitch. What a joke
At 5:25, there's somebody off E. Carolina's bench with a hockey stick, blade up?
No matter which level of baseball, this sports continues to have the worst officiating.
Every sport has the worst officiating.
You Should Come Make it Better Then...
Well, they do have to make 100x the amount of judgement calls then any other sport.
@@rayshamrock yes, i agree with that, but baseball is also the slowest sport. It should be easier to get it right more often than not.
@@Sean-mclaughlin it’s not as easy as it looks. The bang bang ones are the hardest. If you position just a little bit off or if you blink, you’ll miss the call every time. It’s all about the angles
Why is the 1BU calling time just prior to a pitch? Even if asked, it will not be given.
We don't know why time was called, but it certainly can be given.
I think there is a pitch count timer or something. Pitcher took too long and was awarded a ball 1-0 count
@@davidlombardini7517 The count was 1-0 before the umpire called time. The count was still 1-0 when play resumed. There was no ball added to the count.
I'm a NC state wolfpack🐺 fan
@@alanhess9306 not that late you ump apologist.
If the umpire did call time before the pitch, he should have stopped the batter at first base, not let him circle the bases. That tells me the umpire was not sure his timeout call was prior to the pitch. If the reason was he couldn't see, how can he know the status of the pitch?
This was handled HORRIBLY by this crew, optics-wise. First of all, umpire at 1b had time, but didn't come out with the big time call. Then, the conference happened and they went to the defensive manager who had to remind umpire at 1b that he called time. Only then do they go to the batting team.. looks horrible.
Man for a second I was like “ball don’t lie!!”
East Carolina should have walked to their locker room, change their clothes and went home instead of waiting for the umpires.
The HP umpire, the batter, the pitcher, and the catcher was not aware of the timeout. The timeout should not have been valid since the pitch was thrown.
So who won the game and how??
The dude announcing must be related to the boom goes the dynamite guy. He's so confused with what's happening. I bet this guy would be amazing to listen to when he's calling a game over the radio. There it goes over the left field fence. No wait, that was actually strike 3. Wait, now the umpires are saying it's a ground rule double. Hold on a second, now it appears that the pitcher didn't actually throw a pitch. Lol
I had forgotten about that guy.
@1:15 the umping looks like he’s arguing with the umpire 😀
I hated when that happened man
Who won the game?
What the hell? Umps got money on the game smh
I could understand if the timeout call had caused the defense to miss an execution of a play on the ball. Such was not the case.
It does not matter in the least. The play is dead the moment time was called so what happens after is irrelevant.
But that's an opinion; not THE rule. Once timeout is granted the ball is dead and nothing can follow afterward.
Sadly, once time is declared... the ball is dead... PERIOD.. even if it was after the ball was put in play (though a HR in that case may be honored), then the umps would have to put runners where they feel best. But if the pitch had not been delivered.. by rule, the pitch don't exist.. the hit don't exist and NOTHING happens.. and as an umpire who had this happen only a few months ago (not exactly, it was NOT a walkoff), I called time because a ball from a neighboring field entered into play on our field... and the hitter went yard.. and it all had to come back.. you feel bad, but it's the rules and we don't make them.. only enforce them.
@@ronpeacock9939 I don't believe it was declared, since you are an ump I'm going to call your comment biased and say the HR counts and you're outta here. After the fact don't count, bad calls are outta control now. We the people are tiring of these union asshats getting away with these feckless calls that hurt players future contracts. We pay to watch the athletic prowess not you.
@@jasonbradham1172 However , if the batter had missed, they would have had no problem with the umps enforcing that rule. They would have thrown a fit if a strike was call.
He called time because he couldn't see! Lol. Coach Godwin asked him if the sun was going to move that much in the next several seconds.
Home plate ump is in charge U can’t call time with ball in air
Any umpire can call "time." Here, "time" was called before the pitcher began his delivery.
@@milwaukeejt correct but home is final call if ball in play.
Ya had an inadvertent whistle on an interception that cost the kid a run back TD. Nightmares
My rookie year doing HS FB, game is tied, late 4th, K tries for an onside kick and R recovers and returns what would have been the game clinching touchdown....instead.... a veteran official on the other side of the field blows his whistle thinking that K had recovered. Game went to overtime and home team lost. Sucked.
Piss poor mechanics by the 1B umpire. If he calls time in that situation he needs to be running onto the infield grass with his arms signalling the time out and screaming at the top of his lungs that there is no pitch. Turning around and watching the ball go foul was useless.
Was fair
@@jhonsisk6949 Really poor attempt at trolling. Get better or GTFO.
G @ Gary gemmell grow up
@@jhonsisk6949 Get bent, troll. Toodles!
You are the troll. I don't waste time on turds
Well, this didn't go well. If time is requested, it needs to be vocalized--loudly and emphatically by the calling umpire AND echoed by the other umpires--until the ball is killed. On the replay, it looks like the first baseman is gesturning to the first base umpire, who was not calling time, and watching the play happen. If you have a kid hit a homerun, you better award it if the ball was not killed. This is what you do in order to avoid situations like this.
ECU had a great season and should be better next season
This is the most egregious call I have seen in a long time. The ump should be investigated. Something very fishy about that call.
Look where the 1st base coach was. Way beyond the box and talking to the umpire. So he called time.
I say fired AND has to pay like a huge fine like 75k or something like that
The ump called time before the pitch.
In what world can timeout be called during a play?
These umps should never be on the field again
Time for CCS to take a look at this one.
Just curious, given that the batter was batting left-handed why would the right fielder play so far away from the middle of right field? A line drive down the right field line into the corner would've been a stand up triple all day long. Bobble the ball even slightly & we're talkin' in the park 4 bagger! Confusing!
Not sure. Even with the frist baseman hugging the line, a line drive over his head would have been an easy triple.
That Ump needs to be gone.
Hey look at me, I'm an Umpire, it's about me
Not only did they make a bad call but ump stepped on the line what a disgrace
i would be furious
So many things are bad about this
Quite similar to Pirates Tigers bad call in Opening Day 2018.
You can request time but why would the first base ump grant it? This is beyond dumb lol. Had the batter had called it at that point the home ump would have never granted it.
At 01:33 the umpire threw his boy under the bus lol
Hey guys. Keeping the integrity of the game. Stevie Wonder could see that this was a walk off home run. To the losing team! Call it what it is and walk off or forfeit the game to the obvious winner? I’m just saying. This could be a paridigm shift of power.
Texas coming to ECU on a business trip.
That ump should never ump again, just deplorable!!!
Player can call time doesn't mean time will be called exactly at that moment..
Weird
I'm waiting for the day a team gets screwed like this and then just walks. Unsportsmanlike, maybe. But it'll get so much press the officials will have to address it.
These 2 announcers are the worst ive heard
Could the announcer be more clueless 🤦♂️
No, they are idiots.
Ecu announcer
What do you want out of the guy? How was he supposed to know that the first base umpire called time prior to a walkoff home run? This is a freezing cold take.
Pay a little more attention to detail
More importantly why is the umpire granting time so late
It all worked out, Texas beat their asses in the Super Regionals
So....Who won?
@All Sports interviews and highlights Who's Bryant? Who won the game?
@All Sports interviews and highlights Oh. I thought Bryant was a dude. Thanks.
Instead of getting ejected, why not just tell the umpires you want to play the game under protest. While MLB doesn't allow for managers to protest games anymore, I believe college baseball still does. I think Godwin could have under the premise that time was improperly granted. While you can't protest judgement calls, you can protest a misapplication of the rules. I think Godwin's protest would have been successful.
Straight up cheated this guy from a game winning home run when you don't review it!
You can't review a time out.
Another shit call, to ruin a game. Good job guys! I've seen this way too many times. Pisses me the f off.
A situation like this sucks but if time was called the play is dead. Would that coach throw his helmet and argue if the batter popped it up for an easy out?
The other coach certainly would

Another example of Umpires blowing calls on purpose to change the outcome of the game.
I always thought the homeplate umpire calls all the time outs not the guys on the field.
You were mistaken.
Any ump on the field has the authority to call time, not just PU. It happens a lot in little league with kids and their shoelaces where the base ump ends up calling time. I don't believe there's anything limiting when they can call time but ideally it's not while plays are still being made
somebody had money on the game!
Complete BS
Bad camera work
"Here's another look at it" and then show the same angle with no view of the first base umpire.
That’s a crock of shit it if it was foul they should have stopped it before he ran all of the bases until afterwards and the celebration begun such stupid officiating!!!
