  • Erie Cemetery is the oldest of Erie Cemetery Association’s three cemeteries.
Situated on 75 acres, the cemetery is located in the heart of the city at 21st and Chestnut streets. Since opening in 1851, more than 50,000 Erieites have made Erie Cemetery their final resting place, including General Strong Vincent, Daniel Dobbins and Sarah A. Reed.
Erie Cemetery has long been appreciated by not only the families we serve every day, but also historians, genealogists, tourists and walkers, who come to enjoy some of the oldest trees in the city, to study over 165 years of funerary art, to learn about the past, and to enjoy a peaceful time out in the middle of the day. Our first and foremost priority remains the families of the deceased, ensuring that the cemetery they visit today will allow them the peace and time to grieve for those they love and miss.
Erie Cemetery is still an active cemetery, performing over 100 services a year, and continuing to sell burial space near to many of the key figures in our history.
Erie Cemetery offers primarily raised and monument lots, flush cremation lots, columbarium niches, and some flush marker graves for sale at the time of need. There is a beautiful chapel on the grounds available as well.

If ever I was looking for inspiration in days like the days of the Civil War. I can't think of anyone better to turn to than someone with the name "Strong".
Great stuff! Thank you for this. Such incredible history. Let us never forget!

Many years ago I took a tour of erie cemetery. The Strong Vincent stone was covered in pennies. I was told that the football students that went to Strong Vincent High School would place pennies on the stone for good luck in a game!

When I first heard of Strong Vincent was on Little Round Top. I walked from the NY monument. People were signaling from a rocky outcrop a short distance away and there in the rock it just said plainly in the rock this is where Strong Vincent fell.

In 1849 3 sailors from the USS Michigan were killed when a Cannon malfunctioned firing a salute to Vice President Millard Filmore who was visiting President Zachary Taylor who was recuperating from an illness in Erie. The USS Michigan was the first iron clad ship on the US Navy. The sailors who were killed are buried in the Erie Cemetery. Also Mary Bone, the wife of John Bone who was the Lighthouse keeper of the first lighthouse built on the Great Lakes. John Bone may or may not be buried in the Erie Cemetery. Thats another story.
