  • A leaky hydroboost unit could be dangerous. It's a pretty simple DIY project. Watch for the fix and leave a comment down below if you changed yours. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for helping us C30 owners.

I have an 85 C30. I tried replacing my hydroboost unit with one of those Cardone ones I had ordered from RockAuto. A local hydraulic shop informed me that the "bump tubes" a.k.a. the lines with the flare that accept a O ring were only available with certain sized fittings. The power steering line on my truck had an 18mmx1.5 fitting on it, but the Cardone unit had been drilled and tapped for the 11/16" sized fitting on the pressure line at the ~10 o'clock position looking at the unit. I tried Cardone, Brakebest, AdvanceAuto, AutoZone units for the year models 81-87, but all the same problem. The unit I pulled off the truck had the 18mm fitting as well, so that stumped me. I had to order a hydrobooster for a 1991 C3500 to get the correct fitting sizes, but the rod connecting to the pedal was roughly 13/16" shorter than my existing unit. What size fittings are on your rig?

@pinchsgarage3914 that is the same issue I am having with my 89 Squarebody dually. The rod is shorter than the one I took out. What did you do to compensate?

@@lifestartsniw1 I took the old hydroboost unit, and basically broke the rod out of it. I then cut the end off that went into the hydroboost off leaving the pedal connection loop. With the new unit, I wrapped it well with rags, plugged off all the ports, and kept a steady stream of water running on it. I measured the difference in length I needed, trimmed the old rod to fit, cut the pedal connection loop off the new unit, beveled both rods very well nearly pencil sharp, and turned my mig welder up very hot with wire speed as slow as possible. With water keeping the new unit cool, I welded a first pass using a small piece of angle iron and small clamps with shims to get both squared. I ground out the first pass leaving a small groove, kept the welder settings the same, and ran another pass. Once done, I left the water running (but not too close to the new weld) until I could touch the bead with my hand. It's holding up great, no stress cracks visible. Roughly 10k miles into it so far.
Also, there are some videos of homemade tools to "press" the rod out, but newer chineseium metal will crack trying to remove the new rod from the new unit. I found that out the hard way.

Is there a seal between the master cylinder and the hydro boost unit? Getting ready to do this job. 82. C30

Awesome truck. Patiently waiting for more Vega content as well!

I wish I could say soon, but there has been a ton of things happening recently, and not all good. The Vega is fine, but is just hanging out for the moment.

Those square bodies are getting hard to find by me. Good job keeping this one in good shape.

So. What cause your leak? I’m seeing gaskets being main cause of leaks in the hydro boosters. Gasket kits are $30. Also I didn’t see you change old gaskets over. Intakenitnifntheybwere the issue you would have just replaced those
