This upload is an absolute delight with several not commonly heard kritis and elaborate and delightful renditions of popular kritis sung by MMI. Heartfelt thanks once again to Raju Asokan for these uploads that make the listener marvel at the musical genius of MMI
The popularity of MMI in his days was so much that music lovers used to throng his open air programmes. Rasikas used to send slips for his favourite songs and he used to respond positively even till midnight
I find it quite funny that the AIR Tamil announcer-lady called Janaranjai "GanaranjanI." No matter, Sri MMI did a delightful take on this endearing raga and Thyagarajaswamikal's sweet song. I attended a KVN kutcheri in Thripoonithura along with Sri TNKrishnan and Sri TVGopalakrishnan(in both names "T" stands for "Thripoonithura"; Late Sri TK Govindarao's "T" also stands for the same; there is handsome ghatam player Thripoonithura Radhakrishnan, nephew of Sri TVG) where he sang Vidajaladura na manasu; recently in 2018 that gifted and delightful young pullamkuzhal vidwan Sri JBSruthi Sagar played the same song; MDR loved this ragam so much that he composed a song "Ni padamu nammiti patita pavani" which to our serious rasikas' joy had sung it couple of times. TNK and UKS were in their 20's when this kutcheri took place. Isn't wonderful that they are still with us. Sri TNK looks handsomer and handsomer even as old age creeps upon him. Back in 1985 when Sri TNK was touring the US along with Sri TVG, after a kutcheri in Manhattan's nice and small Alternate Museum run by a caring and decent one Mr Browning Sri TVG approached me [after correctly identifying me as a native Malayali] and asked me to take him home and feed his some idli and podi as he was being fed bread and jam by the organizer one Parthasarathy who had done a good job in promoting our music by producing several LPs. Sri TVG wished to get away from Sri TNK as he did not get a chance to sing with TNK on violin and himself playing the mridangam[may be] himself. In any event, TVG wanted to be away from the din and buzzle of everyday tour of the US. My wife at that time was an ER physician with a 2 year old Lakshmi Narayan Kumar at home; I used a coin phone from the corner of 51st and 2nd Avenue in the heart of Manhattan -- around the corner from the Alternate Museum(That phone booth is gone as Cell phones took over). She said she had the ingredients for idli and expressed some apprehension for the quality of it as she hadn't made idli in a long time preferring dosa-making as it was much easier than making a smooth and soft as a flower petal idli. She was going to try any way. TVG and I arrived in my 1985 Chevy Celebrity at our Flushing, Queens, New York apartment at 10 pm. TVG went to bed right away, woke up at 4 am and did dhyanom for 2 hours in our tiny pooja room. At 7 am he was treated to idlis, Nair chammanthy, store-bought podi diluted in some warm ghee and coconut oil. Ethakappoms(fried ripe plantains covered with rice flour; some nice mango dices and apple slices too) added color and sweetness to the idlis. TVG was his happiest as he had 7 idlis and one huge mug of Madras coffee -- all the makings in the hands of the everwilling best hostess -- my dear wife Dr Sushee Kumar. Sushee, Lakshmi in TVG's lap and I drove to Boston MIT's Engg School auditorium where the distinguished prof of Electrical Engg Dr Gurumoorthy greeted us.[On the way to Boston TVG wished for a coffee break. at McDonald's he had coffee and some French Fries and shied away from my order of apple pie.] While Sushee and I waited in the lawn area for the kutcheri to get ready, in came Sri TNK with his wife and children Viji and Sriram. Someone might have told him about my wife being a doctor; he approached us wondering Sushee could heal Viji's some sort of ailment. Sushee and Viji had a quiet talk among themselves; I remember Sushee pulling out some tablet from her purse and handing it over to Viji. As instructed by Sushee she went inside the green room and rested for 15 min. The kutcheri began; Viji ably accompanied her father and brother. TVG was splendid in that fine MIT auditorium with the best acoustics on the planet. As Sri TNK ascended the dais he asked for any special request : I " Mokshamu galada, Saar?" The second song it was, I was in heaven. I am again in heaven as MMI sings this lovely Sankarabharnam with -- right now Sri TNK doing his best alapana --Sarojadalanetri. My rasika father used to hum Sankarabharanam as he concocted the best chandana batter in the cupped left hand as he poured drop by drop cold water using his cupped right hand for that morning's forehead chandana pottu decoration, each and every morning of his 84/92 living days, to present himself the best way possible to the public. Smelling good, of course, in his vajrapasha-pressed white khadi collarless jubba and mundu with a lean black border two inches away from the end of the fabric. I was told that when anyone approached Sri MMI for recording, he would say go ahead; no strings attached. Such a humble man he was. In his memory I close this commentary. as a native New Yorker who by 1978 had already returned from 18 months in Thiru Tamil Nadu, loves Iddlis more than any other Indian food, and carnatic music, i really enjoyed your story. You would have gone to the Ganesha Kovil in Flushing by then, and would have known Woodlands near the UN, where i used to get passable Iddli, Vadai, and Uttapam in those days....at the time the only South Indian place I was aware of....now we have so many choices, ...lovely detailed recollections, esp the way he felt free to ask you for iddli. he would have been desperate. its a feeling that, though i am a Vellaikaran, i can understand. the texture and fragrance. our Laxmi in San Thome used to produce the most magicaly soft iddli; i so enjoyed watching and more, listening, to the sound of the arisis and ulandu being ground for an hour by her daughter Satya, who read a bood the whole while.....and who kept asking if she was done, and Lakshmi would scold her without even needing to put her finger in the dough to see it was ready, looking over at me, and smiling the way a westerner would wink........ the many times I had dysentery in those days, if i was out of my ashram (where i could cook my own food squatting over a wood fire, using the ammi and water from the well,) if i had to eat at a hotel, i would simply get Iddli with sugar, worrying about the cleanliness of the sugar itself, given the illness.....would not trade those days for now, no cellphone or t.v. (or even very much electricity!) in our village of Kaanadukathan, waiting in our ashram in Mylapore (San Thome) for the "caarparation tanni" to come out of the pump each afternoon and pumping furiously to get whatever potable water we could, as our normal healthy pump produced saline water only good for bathing.
Great musicians on one stage. These artists were so brilliant that it is a rare event when we enjoy them individually, but not so much in concert. Just a tad out of sync with each other. The Jayanthasena is truly beautiful. Thank you for uploading Sri Raju Asokan.
I must say this is a rather unusual MMI concert, because I understand he allowed only one microphone on the dais, the one in front of him, and rightly so! Nevertheless, this is a collector's item. Thanks.
What remarkable Swaram singing in Jayantasena. This is truly magical. There is so much problem with Carnatic vocal concerts induced by intrusive accompanists. For example here listen to the number times during episodes of beautiful phrasing the violinist stops to loudly "tune" and play sa-pa-sa or crowd out the alapana (Sankarabharanam) with terrible phrasing and then stop dead when Mani Iyer pauses. Does he not realize after all these years of accompanying that those pauses are part of this man's great music? Those great vocalists (Mani Iyer, GNB) deserved better. Sorry if i have upset or offended the rasikas of this worthy violinist.
Every one have their opinions..TNK Sir's tonal quality is very well known ..Greats like Ariyakudi..semmangudi..Musiri ...MMI..GNB..Alathur bros ..opted for him..even the great Kvn..
You are certainly entitled to your opinions, no matter how ill-informed. TNK was never an intrusive accompanist, as evidenced by his cumulative body of work. In fact, his own solos demonstrate the value he places on silence in music as well.
Such Dedicated Musicians you won't find nowadays.
Divineful and Delightful to hear.
Even God cannot create again such Musicians

Why shocking? No need. We know MMI's music. If they also come to know, the dislikes will become ""likes" automatically.

+Hari Nagarajan - I agree with you, Lalgudi or MSG should have accompanied MMI.
+Hari Nagarajan I think its just the matter of balancing. The volume for the violin seems a tad on the higher side
