My memories take me to 50s and 60s, when I used to reach for his concerts by cycle . He is the one who kindled my latent interest in Carnatic music. Good thing he didn't pack his bags and betray the country like you and your famile Iyere who may not even be speaking Tamil in the future...otherwise we wouldn't have heard of his magnificence.
The only concert live of MMI's I heard was as a five-year-old, at Malleswaram sangeet sabha in Bangalore. He was accompanied at that concert bt LGJ and PMI. I remember leaving the concert hall mesmerised and speechless!

when tn seshan was collector of Madurai way back in mid 1960s he organised the navarathri festival in meenakshi temple and it was a memorable performance of madurai mani iyer accompanied by tn krishnan and Palakkad mani - still it is ringing in my ears what a performance - a real legend - I am proud to say i am from Madurai

Most of these recordings were originally recorded by spool tape recorders and pre-echo/ post-echo is possible due to magnetic print-through due to tapes were stored in the "tail out" position. I am constantly digitizing reel(spool) tapes from the 50s, 60s and 70s and print thru can't be avoided.

That is called Neraval. Where he brings out the full facet of the ragam singing just those words.
For example, Kaalinil silambu, ethanaiyo piravi, rajarajavara, etc.
