How well you have said. I am 72. we had a terrific time growing up. Listening MMI in open without any worries. No tution classes, no worry for grades, yet we were learning best things in life. I am fortunate to have sat close to the great Mahan and herad all these praise on Ambal and the great creator.

I got interest in Carnatic music by hearing Sri Madurai Mani Iyer with Lalgudi Umayalpuram & Alangudi or Phalghat Mani from 1960 @Sri RAM Samaj West Mambalam became fanatic of Madurai Mani Lalgudi Umayalpuram It becomes an habit whenever I am going for any cause if I am able to hear Madurai Mani occasionally the purpose for which I go will be a succeses

Don't know why.. but this is simply sublime Madurai Mani Iyer. Reminds me of the kind of music we used to listen in the nights over the radio!
Pazhani Subrahmanya Pillai mahavidwan's mridangam gave the art of percussion the honour it reichky deserved. He was handsome man too adorning every concert stage with his impressive presence. Thank Saraswathidevi for the existence of AIR set up under that able and caring Maharashtrian B V Keskar who under instruction from Pandit Nehru set up AIR that began broadcasting such musical concerts as this one from the beginning of the newly independent but poor India. Sri Keskar found money for these noble causes. Without these broadcasts over the radio many of these artistes, particularly pakkom artitstes, would not have been known wildly. Plus they were given free travels and some little money for their performances. That money came in handy for many not so popular artistes. Later many of them were on the AIR payrolls permanently making them enjoy decent livings. Handsome pensions really made their lives much easier in the old age when no concerts offer came by their ways. I am happy for such arrangements by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India. Lalgudi's exquisite violin enhances the high quality of this concert. Those days people had the time to sit and listen, no one was in a hurry, and most of the Rasikas were aware of the Ragas, and lyrics . No one will get up and leave during the Thaniyavarthanam, since they will be eagerly awaiting to hear that , and they were highly respected. In the present days the artists are limited to 6 to 9. By 8.30 the audience start leaving the Auditorium. We enjoyed the MM’s programme with least back drop. But today the organisers are spending a lot of amount on stage decorations, which can be reduced or spent usefully for promoting Carnatic music.
The power of concentration of people is generally reduced now. The span of attention is low. Reasons are many. However, cities have expanded/continue to expand beyond all limits. The city centre has changed beyond recognition. .All parts of the cities are not well connected by public transport. Late night trips are problematic in most cities. So, if people start leaving by 8.30 Pm. that is understandable. The remedy is for the organisers to change the timings. However there is no excuse for leaving during taniavartanam- it shows lack of culture, not just sensitivity. But tani avartanam can also be integrated with the program in more imaginative ways, in shorter spells, as is done in Hindustani music.
We are all blessed having such legendary records available for the future generations. MMI, LGJ sir combination is really superb. Koti koti pranamamulu for uploading the greatest concert. Contemporary trinity GNB,MMI AND CHEMBAI. their talents r unique.

In the late 80s I used to drive 300 km per drive on business in a Green Toyata Corolla and hear this 3 hour concert in its entirety. Just Deva-Amirtham
excellent audio and his voice is mesmerizing to everyone nowadays AIR is not calling the artists to perform they are doing in TV from our childhood we used to listen AIr Trichy when s. Parthasarathy was the director from 9.15pm to 10,30pmto Nilayam thirumpukirom varai now all the sabhas are doing live especially ARKAY and Ragasudha Halll directly live programs AIR all should follow since they have lot of A grade and B grade artist at their control for which they will do more
MMI magic. Especially the last song is so difficult and like mohanam one has to really manouvere to keep the audience captive. Great MMI and he is always lucky to have excellent accompanying vidwans. Blessed.

Madurai Mani Iyer was a frail man towards the end of his career/life. He would be carried on to stage. The audience would wonder if the concert would last an hour or at the most two. Imagine the thrill these listeners experienced when they were treated to a full blown 4 hour concert. That is sacred music. Nada brahman. A healing fountain that gives and gives. Pranams to all these maha vidwans who have left a rich legacy of music for future generations to enjoy.
