  • I've observed a few of these let go and break in the past from what amounts to ignorance of the issue. But I've been waiting for when it happens to mine. Well I've found it has now.
    So I'll have to investigate how to best deal with this (and I'm not sure replacement with a new part is the best way.

    Yes very interesting to me, I have used mine exclusively on our local golf course over the past 4 years. Off the fairways in the rough it is at times quite bumpy 1300 kms so far- will check the stem. Have replaced the old thumb accelerator and has been reliable, however after riding 4 hours in heavy rain it won’t go properly. Have stripped readout and go button ,sprayed with contact cleaner and dried. Still not right, do you think I should tip it over and check the battery box ? Battery test is still 53.4 volts

      Probably has fried the BMS, there should be drain holesinthe bottom of the yellow charging socket to drain water. My mates daughters scoot was killed that way. I replaced the BMS and it was fine. See my blog post about changing BMS

    Will be waiting to see your fix for this, deadly problem . Going to have a look at mine today.

      please report back with your finding ... you don't need to remove it to check it but just put it up on the bench with the wheel free (perhaps just lay it over on its side)
      BTW, its hardly "deadly" ... so far every one I've encountered has failed so that when they move it it either falls off or starts to show strange turning behaviour. This is because its essentially a stick poked down a hole and it is held together by gravity (more than can be said for the Mantis when its ONE bolt snaps)

      hope it helps. Since the bolting (see my blog for details cjeastwd.blogspot.com/2020/07/mercane-widewheel-steering-stem-issue.html) I noticed that its a bit quieter over bumps, so that sneaks up on you, but happily regular inspections catches things like this.

    hy ! can you tell me please , the front fork bearing code ?!
    is it normal on ludacris mode , the hub motor to get very hot ?! I have de 500W version.

      @finophile  Před 4 lety

      You should not use ludicrous mode, unless you don't care how short the product life is.
      I'm sorry I have not measured the bearing

    I’m trying to fit the Mantis front suspension. Do you know how that metal stem is attached? Is it just threaded and screws in? Or is it held by a bolt/Allen key?
    Thanks

      well I don't (and wouln't) own a Mantis, but I believe its just the one bolt and the clamp thats for folding.

    0:56 That looks like a large growing crack along the bottom of the steering head above where the paint is bubbling.

    • @finophile
      @finophile  Před 4 lety +2

      yes, it looks like that but isn't. This is not the first time I've taken the wheel off and the first time I took it off I saw that and wondered the same. I did the simple test of spraying a bunch of "penetrant" into the tube and none came out, meaning that its not a crack.
      Careful examination with a magnifying glass shows its just where the casting of the aluminium has come away from the steel tube.

  • @stuffthings
    @stuffthings Před 2 lety

    Nice videos (and blog)! I'm trying to understand, from the factory, is the steel stem just pressed into the aluminum fork?

    • @finophile
      @finophile  Před 2 lety

      Cast into the aluminium, but aluminium being softer than steel eventually it gets deformed by impacts

    Could u please share, how to replace brake wire or cable. Thank u in advance.

    • @finophile
      @finophile  Před 3 lety

      its pretty simple.
      1) You undo the cable bolt at back of the caliper
      2) you take the cable out of the hand lever (if you actually look at it you'll find its dead simple)
      3) pull that cable through
      4) insert the cable down the hole till it comes out at the other end (where the bolt it)
      5) put the head of the cable (with the circular blob of lead) into the hand lever
      6) pull tight at the other end, do up the bolt and cut off any excess
      there's probably a million youtube videos on this because its the same as with 99% of bicycles on the planet.
