  • Untreated wastewater from Faisalabad's hundreds of factories is polluting the water that is piped into peoples' homes. The result is a high mortality rate in children and a health crisis that is only getting worse as the city expands to become a fast fashion powerhouse.

In Faisalabad, I have installed Caustic Recovery Plants to recycle more than 70% of caustic soda. The plant payback in a few months even then I had to convince about this 100 year old technology to mostly uneducated staff and owners who are wasting caustic and water and polluting the environment. The machines are highly inefficient and have no automation. The staff resists change and any innovation. In the last 10 years, i could only convince a few mill owners out of several hundred to install this plant and recover caustic and water. I'm not tired and keep educating. At least I am doing my bit.

I think it should be a requirement for all companies purchasing these textiles & materials to pay a massive tax for environmental protection and education seen as they are saving money from purchasing from a 3rd world country. I also think any products coming from there should have a label that indicates how it is impacting the water and the environment so that the end purchaser at the store has to pay an additional environmental tax, controlled by the worlds climate pledge group to help educate and bring awareness to this horrific problem, if it's killing people, making people sick. Everyone is affected by this water letching out, it doesn't just stay in Pakistan, water moves and seeps down underground. If your saying the plant water isn't good enough to drink but suitable for watering crops, it's the same thing. You're consuming a plant covered in toxic chemicals which is absorbed into the plant. As a small home gardener myself, this is even more concerning and alarming. Bring attention and awareness to stories like these across the world is so very important. I hope others will see this story. Thank you for bringing awareness to this issue. Great story. 👍
Clearly people replying to this that are complaining about the tax don't have one ounce of care for the environment but lining their wallets. Probably the same people that take advantage of hiring overseas countries like this to make their goods. Education is key when it comes to climate change so educate yourselves please and have some compassion for people impacted by climate change and subject to chemicals being leached into their waters and cheaply poor made products that end up in a landfill after a short use. More people need to be open minded about buying lightly used clothes & not under garments but things like jeans, sweaters, shirts and furniture. It would greatly help our environment. I don't mind doing so when I need something, plus it's normally going to a good cause. You donate your clothes and furniture instead of throwing it in a landfill.

I agree with you, but Pakistan has alot and I mean HUGE corrupt elite, aka the elite capture, who run their business and invest in outside markets/country's,
The whole country is like a business to them, which they don't even invest in,
      It's truly sad,
      For taxing these companies
      I agree with that
But the sad thing is those taxes would never be used for good,
The elite corrupt would just steal it for themselves as they always do
How can you make a healthy environment if the ppl in control of that environment are all corrupt?
From high ranking officers to the ones up to the pm floor
      It's all a circus
Your plan is very good tho,
Maybe in the future, when pti/imran khan comes to power again, it will likely work then, but for now it's very unlikely that the governors will do anything, they don't care
They even Steal the aid these poor ppl get from other countries,
      Not only that
There's this whole black market or organ.. and other shit
And not to forget selling young calf and other animal meat,
So like it's not a single problem
Basically that's why they call it "elite capture"
      No matter what
There's always going to be problems as long as these elite dominate from the top.
      It's a pyramid of corrupts.
Alr on the last note, I would like to say, the ppl really need to wake up,
And form a good an solid government system
      And bring about change
I feel pti/imran khan, will be able to bring about that change if he gets the support of the ppl
And in the future/after pti comes to power will these ppl get any help
And then can they secure a healther future for themselves, and for their kids.
It's just we all have to play our part in this change
      Even if it's smallest.

And every day I hear customers declining to buy a plastic bag, because "it's important to take care of the environment", and I'm like...if you only knew. Many times have I recommended various stores where customers can buy previously owned clothes instead, being cheaper and way better from an environmental standpoint. the government should probably partially or fully fund the construction of shared wastewater treatment plants near places with multiple small textile factories, with new pipes dedicated for this textile wastewater. I bet it's easier to treat if you separate it from household wastewater, because it requires different processes. but expecting small factories to do it individually is unreasonable, it would probably always be more expensive and deliver worse results. and normally industries like this are already set up with many similar factories all clustered in the same neighbourhoods/industrial zones, which could make pooling wastewater from several factories into one treatment plant very practical. at least if the city hasn't yet grown densely around the factories - originally, factories tend to be set up on the outskirts of cities (cheaper real estate, less conflict over pollution and noise), but they can become enveloped by poor residential neighbourhoods as the city grows. in such a case, there may not be enough space nearby to build water treatment plants.
the government needs to reduce the monetary infentive of not spending money on pollution reduction to gain a competetive edge. I think if it didn't disadvantage them, a lot of factory owners could be convinced to make an effort to not poison the local population as much. it would certainly earn them some popularity.

    @asifniazi8320 Před rokem +2

Thanks for highlighting the issue. At the same time I’m unsure as to how many people will actually be moved by it and take action to sort out this problem. Particular to Pakistan, this whole thing is a combo of lack of education, lack of access to info, greed of the people including the manufacturers, selfishness of the business proprietors, poor administration by city and municipalities responsible for tackling these issues and implementing solutions as the people sitting in those offices most of the times get appointed through influence of politicians whom they keep voting for all the wrong reasons. So all in all it’s a multilayered heap of problems with corruption and lack of education at its core. Not easy to fix. The only solution is to relocate all these units to a dedicated industrial zones but if anyone dares such a step the textile association brainless heads with political motives will start calling strikes just to earn brownie points for the next elections and everybody will continue living their daily horror stories. Where there is a will, there is a way. Politicians, public and the city administration have to firmly come to a single focal point to sort it out. The day they come forward with a solid resolve and a proper action plan, this problem will be sorted within a matter of a few months. Leadership and taking ownership is what is required here. Rest will be a piece of cake.
