  • Hop & Pops are a type of jump that you’ll have to perform in your formation. This is a skydiving exit technique that will prepare you for an emergency situation where you need to jump at a low altitude. It is also a great jump type to practice your canopy piloting skills.

I completed my A license requirements this past August. Of all the required jumps, the only one I had any apprehension about was the 3,500’ hop n’ pop.
As we were getting on the plane my instructor said, “Now remember, do not pull too soon or you will get tangled with the tail of the plane.”
    Wonderful
As we were taxiing to take off he says, “Now remember, do not pull too late or your AAD will fire.”
    Like I needed another stressor.
I made the jump and it was the greatest thing in the world. The dopamine infusion was ten times normal. “YES! I GOT THIS!!! Let’s do it again.”
The only thing which came close was the first jump I made with a rig I packed myself....but that is a story for another time...
Keep up the good work...Blue Skies

anything between 2 and 3 as you were climbing and in the right spot. They seem to want to make a science out of a 2 or 3 second delay with airspeed provided by the plane . Not sure how you make that hard. The big difference back then were squarer BASE style canopies (or rounds if you want to go back further) that just opened with out the all streaming that is the fashion today.

That's one of the great things about skydiving. From one perspective, all jumps are the same: you jump out of a plane and land on the ground. From another perspective: There are tons of different things you can try and every skydiver has it's own prefered disciplines and things to do while in the air: Hop and pops, CRW, Free fall, tracking, funky exists, high altitude pulls to appreciate the view, formations, swooping, wingsuit flying, some enjoy the feeling of stalling, some don't like going through clouds, some others (like me) love going through clouds while falling on my back (upside down) and feel the cold moisture on my face...

I understand why people are feel a bit more stress doing hop and pop but it was the opposite for me when I started. I was way more stressed and even scared of the 13500ft jumps. In my head (since I was not trusting my abilities yet) I had more time to lose control of my stability, and having a hard time for my landing so having the landing zone free of other canopy helped me a lot, that’s why I preferred the hop and pop. And also, usually there’s not a lot of hop and pop in a load so the sky is totally yours and that so amazing !

Funny, back in the 70's we started low and worked our way up. Hop and pops were your first free falls. Then moving up to 5 second delays. We did hop and pops at 3500 feet. Should be under your trusty 28 or 35 foot round parachute by 2800 feet. Interesting hearing how you start high. Took us a while before we reached terminal velocity. Usually about 15 jumps on average.

Great video Catherine as always 👍
When I did static line training we started at 3,000 (3 sec delay) then worked up to 9,000 (30 sec delay). We didn't actually rely on our altimeters until we got to a 10 sec delay (around 6,000 ft) but wore them as a second check. Even then we still used the count as well as altimeter up to 20 secs (7,000 ft). So for hop & pops I would be inclined to count if you are looking to pull within 10 seconds. In terms of exits we did poised only so we could get stable ASAP 😊

Then last year, I experienced my 1st "Hard Opening!" I experienced 2nd "Hard Opening" this year. Hop & Pop is a great way to test my packing on a 1st jump since it opens slower and nice. Also, after hitting 350 jumps, I started to appreciate hop & pop. I practice bunch of canopy maneuvers during the hop & pop including accuracy landing.

IAD syllabus has us starting with 3 IAD's at 4,500ft followed by a 5-second delay at 5,000', then 3 ten second delays from 5,500'. We don't see anything over 6,000' until solo jump eight, and that's IF you don't have to repeat any jumps. We end up pretty comfortable down there

Just because ...no that cannot be right, because you can already shake the hands of the people down there😅😅 but no in reality as Cathrine said...you have "hours" before deployment...do you remember you Frist class how to calculate the free fall time? 10 seconds for 300m? Yeah that's also valid at 1000m ;) so even after 3 seconds you are somewhere at 900m and 3 seconds are a long time to become stable! So no stress!
The first time I did mine I hade to double-check 3 times my altitude not to pull too early ( we exited at 1100m).

If only I had time for a canopy course. Where I live in Germany is a bit "odd" when it comes to functionality of a dropzone versus being back home in the States. Two more years till I'm back home and jumping like crazy. In Germany, they usually don't even do hop and pops. I met a lot of Germans who hate jumping in Germany while I was in Norway at Voss last summer.

Hey! Great video and love the channel! I don't mean to be a pain in the b... but in minute 02:40 you use meters when I think you should have used feet? 400mts is roughly 1200ft, which is more vertical loss than in terminal... the way I like to explain this when I have students making their Hop&Pops is that when exiting a plane at ANY altitude, because we have relative wind, it takes us 10 seconds to fall the first 1000 feet. After that we reach terminal velocity where we lose that same altitude (1000ft) but in half the time, 5 seconds. =) ✌😁

  • @ivpR1220
    @ivpR1220 Před 4 lety +2

Nice explanation! We usually do hop&pops jumps in the military and out favourite exit/deplo game is “the extractor train” wich consists in hold and stay stable waiting for the next jumper deploy to trow our extractor. The game starts when last (of 3 or 4) leaves the plane and open his own. I mean: the 1st jumps, looks for the 2nd and holds. The 2nd jumps looks for the 3rd and holds. The 3rd jumps and deploy so number 2 trhows away the extractor and then the 1st one do the same. It warantees the scalation of altitudes 😂

You've done 2 jumps. Eating dirt is normal. Repetition is the key to becoming good at anything but new skydivers, typically eat dirt. Frequent jumps in a short time span is best for learning. Jumping once a month is going to make poor progression. If money is an issue for anyone, I would recommend asking for ot, finding a part time job, learn parachute packing, offer to mow grass around the hangar, wash planes, or go and find a handful of lawns to mow in your neighborhood, etc etc

@@SkydiveVibes It was a static line type jump with T-10B type parachute and lasta position exiting from the plane. I took this course from Turkish Aeronautical Association (known as THK in Turkey). I was working for THK during a year(getting no salary) and getting the chance of joining some courses(for free) and i chose Skydiving course. Definition of the course was "preparing traniees to have a good plane exit and stable falling in lasta position by teaching them how to jump and do the lasta position with a static line T-10B parachute". But we were jumping from 2 old and abandoned Antonov AN-2 and they have had so many engine problems so we could make only 10 jumps in 2 months. All jumps were about 1500ft. Then instructors told us to earn money and go to the other dropzone of THK which gives courses (so expensive, price is about 12 times of the minimum salary for the FAI-A license). So i had to left skydiving. But i watch your videos everyday. I love talking about skydiving and topics about skydiving. Your videos makes me excited. Please continue to share videos. NEVER EVER exit the plane with your hand on the (reserve)handle, I disagree with you on that issue. You'll be more likely to pull to fast, especially in a situation with a higher stress level, such as an emergency situation. A too early canopy deployment can cause an entanglement with the tail of the aircraft, something you do not want to happen, especially not in a low altitude emergency situation. I have seen it happen up close when a skydiver exited the plane with his hand already on on his (main) pilot chute. It was a planned hop & pop and he deployed too soon. Luck was that the pilot chute went over the horizontal stabilizer, his main canopy underneath and pulled the pilot chute and bridle off the horizontal stabilizer. TAKE THAT EXTRA SECOND, even at a lower altitude, do never ever exit with a hand on the main or reserve deployment system !
