PlayStation 5 sales hit a peak with 20.8 million units sold in the financial year ending March 31, 2024, Sony has announced. That’s more than any other financial year since the console went on sale in November 2020.
However, PS5 narrowly missed Sony’s sales target of 21 million, itself revised down from its initial, ultra aggressive sales target of 25 million. PS5 sold 4.5 million units in the fourth quarter of the financial year, down from 6.3 million during the same quarter the prior year. Sony has now said it expects PS5 sales to decline during the console’s fourth year on sale to 18 million units.
Sony, which just announced Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst as the new CEOs of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said it expects profits to rise 7% as the lower sales will mean smaller hardware losses, and it expects higher revenue from the PlayStation Plus subscription service. Countering this, however, is the expected negative impact of a decrease in sales of first-party titles. Sony has indicated no new games from its major franchises will be released during the current financial year, ruling out new titles in the Spider-Man and God of War franchises.

▪️Profits rose, with operating income +$868M in Q4 (up +172% over Q4 FY22)
▪️Operating income was at +$2B in FY23 (+16% increase over FY22)
▪️118 million monthly active PSN users as of March 31, 2024 (up +9.25% over FY22)
▪️Forecasting 18M PS5 console sales for FY24, with higher operating profit (ending April 2025)
▪️They don't expect sales increase from first party in FY24, but do for FY25/26, meaning expect major first party titles to launch from April 2025 onwards
▪️Sony says they will invest the most into the Music segment, followed by PlayStation
▪️Sony Group has also set aside $11.5B for investment/acquisitions over next few years (read: for the company) - Hry

It’s not so much that people can’t afford it (although housing prices are crushing people’s spending power in the U.S.), so much as $70 isn’t a competitive price point. Sony and other publishers made a gamble that $70 would sell as well as $60. Meanwhile, quality older games with massive amount of content go on sale all the time for $10.

And I guess that attitude passed down to my dad (RIP), because I remember going to his house one day and I had bought something I really liked, so I wanted to show it to him. So I said "Look at this!

yet again, Xbox console sales are down ~30%, after they were already down 30% in April. Microsoft has been well behind its competitors Sony and Nintendo for years now in terms of hardware sales, and now it’s clear it simply wants to transform into a different kind of gaming company entirely.

Lower sales 4 years into consoles life span is not surprising. The only issue is we were basically robbed of 2 years with Pand3mic so it feels like the consoles haven't been out that long. Not worried about sont at all. They are still ahead.

Tom Warren needs to learn math. In 2022 PS5 sold 19 million, 2023 they sold 21 million. Console sales is up 8%. The 29% down is only 4qtr vs 4 qtr.

Sony is trying to acquire paramount pictures at the momentmoment. That acquisition money doesn't even take into consideration what they have set aside for that.
I wonder how many people's hype for a new PS5 dwindled over the first two years that scalpers were getting their grubby hands on every console that came up for sale, and these people have settled on sticking with their PS4s while purse strings are a little tight?
This Gen is still disappointing. It feels like it didn't even got of the ground fully. I got my PS 5 at the beginning of last Year and in hindsight i could have waited much longer to buy one.

If we look at Switch or 360/PS3 we had plenty of must have exclusives by four years in. As of now, for only exclusives, we have FF16, Demon's Souls remake, the PS rogue like shooter with the astronaut lady, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, Spidey, and Stellar Blade. Seven-ish must have exclusive games in four years.

As I stated before, I don't mind them doing ongoing games, I just hope they don't make it their no. 1 preference and still have good singleplayer games you just play through and don't try to suddenly bring out 10 or so of those ongoing games at a time, forgetting about the other games and not being able to handle it.

I think the slightly lower numbers are due to the fact that new customers might be holding out for a pro version. Also the fact that PS5 sold almost as much as PS4 is amazing because there is a $100 difference. It was much easier for the masses to purchase a PS4.

Some people seem to think Sony should drop the price of the PS5 but I'd like to point out the PS5 overall is not very profitable for Sony as it stands now. Sure the dollar amounts are huge but so what, if they're only making 6% what's the point? Remember Sony has a financial service division and can make way money investing in that. Sony has little room to maneuver on price side, that's why we keep seeing layoffs and will keep seeing layoffs.

I suspect even if they don’t release first party games until 2025 they will likely start promoting 2025 games in the coming months.
For me there is still the variable factor of putting more and more games on PC, at some point I just going to stop buying this console and jump into PC where I could have more options and better prices.

This is just cow capitalism works. Regulations will fix stuff and things will get marginally better until the rules get bended and broken again resulting in layoffs, unreasonable “targets”, and so on. A better economic system is needed.
I came from the original Xbox to the Xbox 360. I then left and went nine years on the PS4… didn’t really like the look of the PS5 switched back to Xbox with the Xbox One S. upgraded to the series S and now the series X. Picked up a PS5 just over a month ago tried it didn’t like it deleted my account took the PS5 back. It’s a hideous looking console and it really doesn’t interest me.

Something you said dreamcast guy in a video not too long ago really made sense. Why do they need ALL the money? They're making truckloads of money now. Why can't they be happy with that? That's why i feel our beloved single player games aren't going to be as often as we use to get them. They aren't happy with that return. They want that fortnite type money.
Most people are struggling with the cost of living high mortgage rates, food prices. entertainment always struggles when consumers have less spare money .
When I made the jump from ps3 to ps4 in 2016 I was surprised that my PSN library never "carried over" and I'd have to repurchase some games again
Since then I'm in no rush to get the next system ASAP
People I knew never used to have high end pc,s because of cost and how difficult it was to get hold of certain games(we were poor) , but now consoles are up around 400 / 500 pounds and have exclusives etc so I know alot more people that just get a mid level gaming rig and a steam account ,it just makes more sense , consoles were always more accessible than a half decent pc.... until now .

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but Sony is in the process of trying to buy Paramount . I’m not sure if that has any impact on that budget and if they get paramount would those franchises be opened up to their game studios for potential games

Considering that Sony+ Apollo group has put in offer to acquire Paramount, part of that could be set aside for this. Unless they called that one out already.
The woke direction will not work if you care about profit, lol. But the woke agenda is not about profit. It's a combination of many things, really, like GAAS focus, lack of new ideas, and lack of developer risk-taking.

In this new day and age you don't need to have a new game come out every 5 seconds. There is so many games that are great in the back catalog that you haven't played. Just learn how to use the store and go find those games or look up CZcams videos
