    **UPDATE: I have removed the MD4x4 Adapter kit and have switched to the NEW Doomsday Diesel AX15 To OM617 Adapter Kit. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE MERCEDES DIESEL 4x4 KIT AT THIS TIME. Find that video HERE: • Jeep Cherokee Diesel S... **
    Warning: LONG VIDEO AHEAD! I recognize that this video is insanely long, but in it I will cover a host of topics from a birds eye view. I wanted to show everyone how the OM617 motor fits, what special steps to consider, cost of the conversion as well as fuel mileage I have been seeing.
    This swap was a massive undertaking and there was a ton of custom work involved on many different components. Because of this, I am releasing this video as the "official" introduction and overview of the Jeep Cherokee Turbo Diesel Conversion. This is the first video of many in this series. After this video I will be looking for feedback from all of you to help guide me towards other videos you would like to see. I will break each component out into its own videos where I can dive much deeper into the "how to" aspect of this swap.
    Grab some popcorn, absorb the info and enjoy! And don't forget to subscribe and leave me a comment below.
    As always thank you for tuning in and I hope you are excited to see many more videos on this swap in the very near future!

    I appreciate how much attention to detail to paid to this video and the jeep. I know from my own projects that covering everything would make the video many hours long. You hit key bullet points and I feel like people that have good mechanical inclination can ascertain just about all of what actually went into it. Rock crawler or overlander, built jeeps are always respected when done right!

      I appreciate that. This was an overwhelming project. Definitely my most in depth project so far on this jeep. Feels good though. I did another updated video the other week. I go into depth on the adapter kit because after this video it nearly destroyed my transmission. I am running a doomsday diesel adapter kit now

    I did the same swap in my tj. I went with a mercedes4x4diesel adapter and was a little underwhelmed with the instructions (or lack thereof) and the quality of the materials. In 3 years and maybe a couple thousand miles, I’ve been through three pilot bushings. The engine also feels very unusually...shakey when revved up. Not like other on617’s I’ve driven. I see doomsday diesel has a better quality kit and a thicker adapter which brings the trans back a bit. Your swap looks terrific and I can really appreciate the work that you put into this. This inspired me to get back at it

    ive had to rework and build a 100% custom rear sump pan, and a pickup to make use of the pickup. i have built a number of 4.5-4.7l jeep inline 6 strokers. they really, really do a good job putting the basic 4.0 ho to shame. on adding the lift, look into the stock pickup 8 lug front and rear GM axles, theyre commonly swapped out. the stock limited slip is junk, but stock gearing was 4.56 so itll take to tall tires well. im following.

    Thank you for making this video! Because I've been going back and forth a about either a mild built 318 v8 or do a 5 cylinder mercedes diesel engine. Its for a 88 Dakota.. ( wich they did not ever put a v8 in those trucks, the v8 ones where 1990 and onward and had a different front end/radiator support and frame/ mounts are all different) the trucks built 86-89 where shorter in the engine bay meant to fit the LA v6. My saving grace is that the truck has a jeep 5 speed transmission in it and transfer case wich opens me up to any adapters for the jeep to mercedes conversion (yes I have a welder and can fabricate this truck to the end of the earth and back including making my own oil pan thats not a issue) but its nice that I can order the adapter parts, and just make mounts. Good information so far on the little details to think about. All good bush vehicles are diesel, thats all I know for certain that and the old Benz engines were built very well.

    Loved this video great content, you know your stuff and do not talk baby about how its done, you say it and move on. I hate guys that say put wrench on bolt and turn to left type videos. I would love to do this with my Jeep WK but don't have the workshop or time, so I just watch and dream. Keep the information coming. Thanks.

    So. Just curious if you’d admired the “Black Smoke Racing” drift cars” Mercedes 123 and 124 wagons?
    OM606 engines are crazy sturdy. I’m had several with 300K +(miles)that ran like new.
    I’m wondering how you get through PA inspection/emissions without a functioning OBD2?
    I too live in Northeast. PA

    Nice work. The Cummins 4BT would work better in a Landcruiser, as they have deeper engine bays. That gasoline engine radiator is more than big enough for that turbo Diesel engine. The turbo Diesel engine converts more of the fuel energy into kinetic energy, hence less heat is purged to the cooling system.

    Also how did you get the factory ac working? Im putting the om617 in my isuzu rodeo..got the 5 speed tranny adapted myself, about to stuff it in the bay today and see what else doesnt fit..had to cut crossmember and drop rack/pinion out the way of oil sump..deal with that when i see the room left. I think my ac comp has a 5 spline pully..didn't disconnect it so I'm hoping to convert the v notch pully to 5 spline somehow so i don't have to evacuate the system.

    Thumbs up. I have never seen such a clean motor swap. You've done the most beautiful and smart job. By saying smart I mean from engineering point of view. Everything was done with extreme precision and thought after. I wish this world had more people like you working in mechanic shops but unfortunately it is mostly dirty lazy and careless disappointment with limited mindset. You have done something that most of those so called professionals would say impossible.
    Now I'm going to ask you a question after I expressed what I think about your really nicely done piece of engineering art. What is acceleration is like and I'm not asking time for a quarter mile time or precise 0 to 60 . My question is more about how car responds to right pedal for example when you go for overtake or entering fwy. Did that engine make it quicker.
    And another question why did you go with such a complicated swap when you could have built stroker out of original 4.0 which would give you 300+hp and close to 400ft/lb of torque and it would be more budget friendly build which also has tons of potential for tuning like supercharger or turbo. You can get even close to 400hp and 450ft/lb with ported head with proper valve train and custom intake and exhaust manifolds .

    How do you ever expect to be able to adjust your valves with all of those hoses and stuff going across the top of the valve cover? They need to be adjusted every 12,000 miles. I have an extra 617 out in the garage and was looking for something to put it in. You have done a great job with your swap. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

    • @KeystoneCarry
      @KeystoneCarry  Před 5 lety +1

      12,000 miles to me is excessive. I plan to check them every year, but I run high quality oil and this motor is completely rebuilt. I don't anticipate a ton of adjustment being necessary. With that being said, the only hose that impedes removal of the valve cover is the AC high pressure line. The wiring harness can be moved about 6" out of the way. The high pressure line isn't an issue: I simply remove the AC compressor and set aside with the lines attached. I have had the valve cover off in the jeep multiple times. It does take some extra work, but it is still very doable. Thank you!

    • @KeystoneCarry
      @KeystoneCarry  Před 4 lety +2

      Two nights ago I pulled the valve cover and checked the valves. Just a heads up. Wanted to let you know it was very straightforward. It is tight, but possible to get the valve cover off.
