Thanks! I have these windows and I'm considering either replacing them, or just getting low-e argon panels for better efficiency. Some get a lot of direct sun and I think an upgrade would be good.

My son broke the upper part of window, I was googling some companies for replacing window.. But after seeing your video , decided to try my own... the worst case I need to call the contractor... Its okay I can convince my self that me and my son broke the window.. :)

Do you think replacing the glass part will cause air leak issues? There are a few scratches (1-3 inches) on my window glass. I'm not sure if I should replace them. Thank you.

I learned a quick trick to take out a window pane this past summer: Just back into it with a lawnmower, and if the bagger is the right height-voila! I suggest putting a tarp down first so it will catch all the broken pieces. But be careful, because you don’t want to mow the tarp.
On second thought, your process is probably the best way.

Should mention capillary tube, possibly pinching it shut, loe, pads to avoid glass contacting frame.

Very informative, thank you. I need to replace indoor facing glass of the double pane that you took out and set aside at the start. Any instructions on how to do that?
It is all one piece. The two panes are sandwiched together with gas in the middle. The pane I installed is double pane. So you just take out the whole broken double pane and install new double pane.
What do you call the plastic strip you took off. I need to order that?
If ya use a plastic clip removal tool by inserting at the seam and pry away from the frame. No lifting and pulling and it WILL pop out with ease. The spacers are supposed to be there to keep the window glass at its set position until silicone cures for hold. Then remove them as they can cause points of tension from movement and expansion from the house and frame.
Great advice! I didn't know there was a tool for that or that they needed to be removed considering they were still in there when I took the glass out... In fact I got a comment from someone at JelWen so said the video was great and never mentioned pulling them out. Oh yeah and someone else commented saying they are actually called Keepers! I learn something new every day!
Borsellino Carpentry I got a clip removal kit from harbor freight. Works for automotive body clips, vinyl window frame keepers, I even use them for disassembly of appliance body parts that are held together with snap clips . They work as a light duty pry bar when scratching or marring are an issue.
Borsellino Carpentry I have a window cut out tool from auto glass removal. Has a nice knurled handle with a cable pull with T handle. Knife is a 90° bent and can be removed, replaced and sharpened.
If the spacers were made to come out don't you think the factory would remove them? Nobody is going back and removing spacers from their windows.
If I had a spare window, that was exactly the same --then I can switch out the bottom (gliding) sash no problem. But is it possible to switch out the top sash that’s fixed? (Where my glass is broken) or do I have to harvest the glass from the good spare window to place it in the broken installed window?
I'm not sure about that I've never replaced a fixed sash. I'm sure it depends on the manufacturer and design of the window
Was this to upgrade the glass for energy efficiency. I have the same windows (jeld wen). Can you get an efficient bottom sash?
actually the outer pane was broken from a rock thrown from the lawnmower! I would recommend calling jeldwen and seeing what options they might have for you

How did you measure the thickness of the glass when you ordered the insulated double pane glass?
if it is a jeldwen window they should be able to tell you what the thickness is. My guess is there is a standard size depending on the company

This vinyl window. How about wood frame sash? Also on the wood frame window there is the seal between glass and rail/stile what do you call that?
If it is single pane glass (old windows) there is glazing on the outside that needs to be chipped away then the glass will come out. If it is a newer window there might be a wood molding that can be removed and the glass exposed. It all depends how the particular window is manufactured. Worst case scenario the glass is installed when the sash is built and you can't replace it. I don't think every window is designed to have the glass replaced. Wish I could help more but without physically seeing it there's no way for me to know
What are the things that you take off in the beginning and clip and snap back on at the end?
They are plastic strips that hold the glass in place. My client got new one's directly from Jeldwen when he ordered the new glass

Hi what if there is screws? Is it as simple as unscrewing them and the glass comes out? Or is it screwed and also glued? What is your opinion? We accidentally broke our top piece on the inside (outside is fine)
Hey! So on doors it is often held together with screws and yes you remove the screws and pull the glass out. HOWEVER, you need to replace both pieces of glass even though the inside one is only broken, they come sandwiched together with gas in between them all as one piece. That's what gives it the insulating properties.

Great video! My question is replace or repair? my 30yr. old anderson wood window glass glazing is weeping inside and the souble pane seal is broke/leaking. the sash cord broke and the window is sticking and quite hard to open. Other than than it is sound. I can't see replacing it cost and the window is sound. How hard is it to glaze the window? I am a diyer w/ moderate abilities. Also, is window glaze not use vs silicone ?
Glazing with actual glazing is really hard. But I found a product that is glazing that comes in a caulk tube and works great and easy to use. I would give it a shot cause it's way cheaper than replacing the window! Keep them going as long as you can because the new vinyl windows are garbage compared to old wooden windows as long as you have insulated glass

using the glaze in the tube product, first take off the old glaze, clean and dry area to be glazed and apply glaze to window. Do I need to pull out the pane and embed to pane into the glaze.?
I just scrape out the old glazing and then add new glazing. I don't think it's necessary to pull the glass out. The glazing just keeps the water out
I just ordered a new window after watching your video. I thought it was no big deal to replace the snap-in vinyl glazing beads. I'm having trouble finding the exact size to replace the ones I broke. The common size seems to be 3/16 in by 5/8" in. The ones I removed are closer to 1/4 inch by 5/8". Do you think the 3/16 in will work?
sheesh I don't know. The customer I did this for called Jeld-wen directly and they sent everything he needed

the customer I did this job for got the glass direct from the manufacturer Jeld-Wen. If you don't need the grills between the glass you can buy insulated glass from most glass places. Also lumberyards usually have connections with glass places for ordering custom panes

i don't know. the customer got the glass and parts from the manufacturer i just installed them

I'm pretty sure my client got it direct from jeld-wen! you can also buy glass diectly from some local lumberyards or glass places.

20 minute job turned into an all day-er, just use a metal spatch or oscillating tool to cut the bind of the double sided tape and before you scrape it off spray it with some glass cleaner and use a half inch chisel to scrape it off, goes by way quicker my friend.

Thanks, The MFG doesn't put their name on the window. I guess I will call Homecrete homes and ask them which window MFG they used. I am in Florida and the sun takes it tole on every. Thanks Nick for answering !

I’m looking for windows to put in my house.. I don’t need the best of the best. Just Need to insulate better then 1960s. Are JELD-WEN a alright? Like will I regret buying a cheaper window?
Well it depends. If the 60's window had insulated glass, they were made pretty well. If they are single pane glass, any newer window with standard insulated glass will do better. My biggest complaint about vinyl windows is the vinyl framing itself is not insulated so even though the glass is insulated, you can have a lot of hot/cold transfer through the window frame. With old windows in the 60's they were typically made out of wood, which although not a great insulator, in my opinion, insulates better than vinyl. You can get wood windows nowadays but they are extremely expensive and then you are dealing with a lot more maintenance costs vs vinyl. There's a tradeoff for all of it. I haven't seen enough JELD-WEN's to know if the weather-stripping is any good, but weather-stripping can make or break a window too. If it isn't perfect, you'll have drafts. And without seeing two companies windows side by side it's hard to say. Not sure I really answered your question. If it helps, I installed cheap Pella windows from Lowe's and custom vinyl windows from Interstate and I find them both adequate for my home. I've installed top of the line Marvin windows and been unhappy with them. So in my eyes more money does not always equate to a better window.

how do I remove the top aluminum window pane out and replace it without removing the entire window in a manufactured home? Yours is just like mine but mine is a metal frame.
not sure, i've never done an aluminum one... some windows unfortunately can't be repaired. I have some vinyl windows in my home and the vinyl is formed around the glass so you have to replace the whole window... if you know what the manufacturer is i would recommend calling them to see what they recommend
@@BorsellinoHomeServices I can't afford to replace all of my windows and for the most part they're all in pretty good shape but a for a few, and it's just the top pane in 3 windows that is unsightly and one has a crack. I want to sell my place and I really can't afford to invest much more in it. It's just a manufactured home. But I want the windows to all look nice. Isn't there a way to just remove the top pane and replace it?

Actually the guy I did the job for got it directly from jeldwen. There is usually a number somewhere on the window that they reference. If you call the manufacturer they should be able to assist you in getting the right one. I have gone directly to a glass company before with measurements and they can custom make insulated double pane windows.

@@hassolvera I did not purchase the glass so I'm not sure how much that cost. This was a friend of mine's house and I did the job in trade for some electrical work on my truck. If I was to bill someone for this I would probably charge $60 for labor plus materials and NYS sales tax.

Great video! Get a better window if you’d like to avoid replacing glass every 10 years. Jeldwen is not nearly as good as an Andersen or Marvin window.
