    The thumb does not alternate between 4th and 3rd strings, but aims to play root - root - fifth - fifth, so it plays two strokes at each string. Before the change to new chord, the thumb pattern is modified to root - root - fifth - root.
    As the F major chord 2010 has the root at the 2nd string, in this video the thumb drops to that string to reach the root. See two measures of F at 0:26 where thumb picks the root on the 2nd string and fifth on the 3rd string so the off-beat notes are played for the moment on the 1st string only.
