- In the wake of massive protests in the Northeast over the Citizenship Amendment Act, several references have been made to the Inner Line Permit Sytem in large parts of the region.
On December 19, the Meghalaya Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to implement Inner Line Permit in the state.
Earlier on December 11, the inner line permit regime was extended to Manipur with President Ram Nath Kovind signing the order to this effect.
So what exactly is the Inner Line Permit System?
The concept of the Inner Line Permit comes from the colonial area. Under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1873, the British framed regulations restricting the entry and regulating the stay of outsiders in designated areas.
The system is in force in four Northeastern states - Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and now Manipur - and no Indian citizen can visit any of these states unless he or she belongs to that state, nor can he or she overstay beyond the period specified in the ILP.
In addition, the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution provides for the administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram to safeguard the rights of the tribal population in these states.
On the show today, we talk in greater detail about the Sixth Schedule, the Inner Line Permit regime and the powers bestowed upon the states that are covered under these.

I am from Ladakh. Today everyone aware that after aborgation Article 370 and 35a of Jammu and kashmir govt. Segregate and declared two union territory. Ladakh is one of them. But Ladakh got the status of UT without Legislative. Now all the resources and culture and tradition of Ladakh os under threat. Assam & Tripura both need Ilp to be saved ,some people might not understand it ,but locals of that area understand that it's the need of the hour

@@NamasteIndia1947 that's where you have misconceptions ,you guys are always welcome ,there are many people from other states who have govt jobs ,business ,their own land & family living in Assam ,Ilp will only make each one of the new comers ,state their visit & reasons & make a pass which can be renewed anytime ,it helps identify citizens ,in north east
@@chellingiganesh6111 I dunno if you are joking or not but getting an Ilp is not that easy ,specially when the BJP has removed all the district's within Assam which could have applied for Ilp ,while giving Manipur full Ilp ,their plan is opening up to the Assam people one after one
ILP is hopeless..Mizoram is an example of failed ILP...Too many Bangladeshi Chakmas entering through Bangladesh...Border protection and security need to be upgraded.
@Chanda Joishi it's been there for years in parts of north east & wether someone's lazy ass wants or not,even we north easterners are doing before entering other states , while BJP masterfully took out districts that were inline for future Ilp ,by providing Ilp to only Manipur ,it's a free work to you but for us it's the past diffence against immigrants

We the Tripura state of indigenous peoples are exploits by non-indigenous (Bangladeshi),So our state (Tripura) need urgently ILP( Inner Lines Permit).
ILP is necessary but is not the solution. As long as there is corruption in administration and village level, nothing can stop illegal migrants from entering our land. This is when maintaining local Army becomes important

In karbi Anglong ,the 6th schedules district of Assam state has already exploited by non-tribal community, so ILP - Inner Line Permit is very important to implement in this area here we lost our land, jobs,power,etc. Or implement the Article 244A of the Indian constitution.
I wonder how many MDCs(Member of District Councils) have knowledge about all this .😒
