Ohio State deserved the title shot against Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl that year - they were by far the best of the one-loss teams. Back then all that mattered was when you lost instead of the circumstances of the loss. Florida State had the worst loss of all the one-loss teams but it came in September as opposed to November/December like OSU, KSU and UCLA and that's all that mattered in those days.

    • @a_coleman11

If you really look it at…the 2002-2003 Buckeyes teams had distinct advantages at literally every position over the 1998 Buckeyes. Definitely an edge along the offensive and defensive lines plus a very big edge in wide receiver talent with Jenkins and Holmes. The 2002-2003 Ohio State defenses were constantly pressuring opposing quarterbacks, so it would have been a big question mark how those late 90’s Buckeye teams would have been able to move the ball on offense

Even tho UCLA was my team growing up and even till this day, I rooted for OSU over Michigan as a kid. So I remember that 98 OSU team very well. One of the most talented teams I'd ever seen. That team was w/out question the best team in CF that year. I truly believe they could have beaten MSU 99 times if they played 100, but that one game in Columbus, in a game they were up 15 in, was what cost them a national title. There problem was not beating UM during that mid to late 90's stretch, and in the year they finally did, it was the other Big 10 squad from Michigan that beats them.

Love/hate feelings about this game. Up 24-7 at halftime and win 24-10? Wtf. Cooper let the O go to sleep in the second half, which is what cost us a NC that year. Coaches that win NCs, like Urban Meyer, keep challenging a team to perform even when you're up by 20+ points, and the loss to MSU that year is why. You can't take your foot off the gas against good teams... anyway, so watching Germaine, Boston, Miller, Lumpkin, Katzenmoyer, Moore, and Winfield finish their last game by playing the same way, weirdly actually kind of upsetting. I can't watch the 2nd half of this game. This team should have won the NT that year.

@@jamesmarkscott6202 A&M had some good players that year (Dat Nguyen, Ja'Mar Toombs would go on to be fan favorite), but the point is OSU jumped out in front and then went to sleep in the 2nd half. "Down through the years" Sparty has mostly been irrelevant--"No, Sparty, No" was a meme for quite awhile and our all-time record is 34-15--so that '98 MSU win really stands out. I guess 2015 counts also. But usually it's TSUN or Purdue ruining things, although in the history of the B1g every team has upset tOSU somewhere at least once (Iowa and Purdue most recently, but Minnesota in 2000 pops to mind, even lowly Indiana in 1988. But of course Rutgers and Maryland don't count, since they are relative newbs)
