    I'm getting ready to put my hard-earned cash on a new PRS Silver Sky and have listened to just about everyone's youtube vid's on the guitar and I can't help but to gravitate to the maple. I really like your channel and the way you played each. Thank you for sharing and for all your efforts in making this video. After weeks of deciding which one, I'm going with maple. I really like the way it sounds. Thanx Mr. Fujita for helping me!!

      The maple to me has the better tone. The pickups in this PRS have more mids in them than Strat pickups. John Mayer, I'm sure he wanted more bids from the guitar itself rather than chasing mids at the amp. Tone starts in your hands, guitar, quality cord is a must and then amp. Those things equal overall tone 1st. Then effects. Judt don't go and buy a PRS to own one or because you have heard others play them. Everyone will sound different. And you really can not get the full value of tone from headphones or computer. The guitar will even sound different at the store and the amp you choose. If your going to pay good money for a guitar, if you can or have a amp you play through at home take it and use it esp if it's a tube amp. You can have a guitar armor what ever setup you have and even if your s seasoned player we'll sound different. So try different guitars. Fender makes great guitars with different pickups you can try. If you have a guitar you like now you could change pickups, pots and get a tone you would like without spending a few grand. Only thing I really like about the PRS is the scoop at the lower area to reach the frets. My favorite guitars are Ibanez. Although I like it her guitars for various tones. I don't have a guitar that does everything. But my go to Guitars are my 57 Strat , my Ibanez RG550 without a pickguard and a guitar I built myself. I don't like poly finishes only nitrocellulose. I don't use terms byt I have them on guitars just adds more sustain. I do like the trem setting on the top not floating. John has his set that way. Transfers more tone to body and gas 4 springs in back to keep the other strings in tune when bending notes. Plus since it has a bone nut that is cut properly and polished the 4 springs will pull it back in tune if you use the trem. SRV used allnt springs on his.

    to me, the maple one sounds more glassy but in a good way. Like one of those big cones that people design to use with smartphones long ago, and work with just acoustics - there were no powered speakers or amplifiers. Also reminds me of the difference between a slide made of glass compared to the ones made of steel. I agree with Mr. Fujita: I like both! Very hard to pick one of the two.

    Hard choice. I played only maple strats for years, but recently acquired 2 rosewood strats, (one Squier which actually plays VERY well but still adjusting to the narrow nut), and a 2001 American Series. In love with rosewood now.
    For the Silver Sky comparison, a few personal observations.
    1) I definitely think the
    Rosewood sounds warmer, and the maple is a little overly bright.
    2) After personally playing rosewood and maple necks consistently back to back, I have found that although rosewood necks are usually warmer, and maple necks brighter, it is easier to eq a warm sound into a maple neck than it is to get a punchier sound out of a rosewood neck.
    3) For PRS comparision in this video, if you listen closely to the maple neck right around the 12 min mark, you can definitely hear that the neck relief and or string height is slightly less on the G and B strings, compared to the rosewood. The reason I mention this is that I have noticed that for whatever reason, rosewood fingerboards are much more forgiving when set up for lower action. Less noticable string buzz and accidental harmonics when playing aggressively.
    Don't know why... it just is...

      A Silver Sky SE will be more than a sufficient upgrade from the Squier and will also give you the most value for your money as it is less than a third of the price of a USA model. The noticeable differences between the two are choice of colors and aspects of quality that your average player either won't be able to appreciate or at the very least notice. The SE model also has a slightly flatter radius coming in at 8,5" while the USA model has a vintage 7,25" radius; the former being the more appealing choice for the wider audience. Sometimes the feeling of owning something trumps what you're actually paying for and I totally get it, I have a PRS Custom 24 myself and they retail at around $6,000. I'd say try them both out, they're both absolutely fantastic.

    • @gregperkins7723
      @gregperkins7723 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Filip is right, the SE is pretty damn close. Used one go for a bit more than a new Squire Affinity and another universe of quality. I sold both of my SEs and now have two cores but that's only because the cores are just over-the-top fantastic instruments and they have become all I ever want to play.

  • @budopsych3148
    @budopsych3148 Před 3 lety +17

    I'd say the rosewood has a warmer sound overall, but also less V-shaped in the sound profile. The maple is brighter and punchier with less mids, particularly low mids, but more lows and highs. Put into a mix different fretboards have their respective place as winner. As a standalone, I am partial to warmer sounds, so I normally prefer the rosewood, but I like the front maple quite a bit.
    From a techy, geeky perspective, I am interested in what their frequency distributions are.

    I used to think that I didn't like the finish coming between the string and the wood, that rosewood would produce a more organic woody tone, also maple can get a little sticky in humid climes. But then I got a Clapton Strat in the late 80's and a custom shop maple Strat about 10yrs ago and it can't be denied that maple produces a warmer woody low tone, snappier on the top end too, that my rosewood Strats don't quite match.
    This comparison, to me, really defines the difference. IMHO the rosewood is like having a delicious piece of french/Italian toast but the maple puts garlic butter on it (makes the appropriate Homer sounds - mmmm garlic) assuming you like garlic toast - try not to condemn you if you don't. That maple middle pu is the best middle I've ever heard - amazing.
    Thanks Tomo for making this vid I've been looking for an opportunity to get my hands on maple and rosewood but never seen them both in the same place.
    I would do some damage to a credit card right now if they made the maples in natural, sunburst, or nebula, to me the colors are boring, except nebula (WOW), I need to see wood grain. But, GAS aside, I aint hurting for tone between the Strats a PRS 513 and a Hollowbody I - so I'll [try] to holdout [a little longer] for the perfect cosmetic cap on a ?perfect? instrument.
    Meanwhile groovin' on your Guitar Wisdom Tomo - Thanks again.

    I played both in the store, and ended up going with my roots, Maple.
    I preferred the look and feel of the maple, and coincidently is the same with my Fender choices. Maple rings out better acoustically for me

    Tough call!!!!!
    Easy answer BOTH!!
    But maple has bottom end punch & crisp highs!

    Best ever comparison I've ever heard. Of course, I like both. Have a 2004 rosewood USA std Tele and love it. But I'm hearing a mellow scooped articulate sound in the maple. Your hearing pickups that John wanted with more mids from the pickups. The maple neck helps the mids from getting muddy . M as ple necks have a brighter sound to them. The maple neck helps them come out without being muddy and the pickup keeps the highs from bitting. Rosewood fretboards have more oil and larger pores which makes a lower tone overall with the body. The combination of all nb the wood put together will have a tone to it's own. Pickups will have a tone almost it's own the combination of woods and pickups, strings, pots and your hands will determine y iui or over all tone before the amp.

    It just hit me lol….
    Maple has an “IMMEDIATE ATTACK” punch in lows & lively highs!!!
    Rosewood has a “BLOOM” to notes!! Highs & lows laid back a bit!!!
    Both great, very subjective & personal.
    Possibly one of each for different applications!
    From a vintage standpoint I would go with maple!

    Both awesome sounding instruments but I love the looks of the maple fretboard. I played one with rosewood fantastic guitar after holidays going to check out one with maple.All my guitars have either rosewood or ebony necks so I think it’s time to add a maple PRs to the family

    • @DrAdams-fx6gy
      @DrAdams-fx6gy Před 4 měsíci

      The maple neck fits in between the ebony which has more snap it's very hard, Rosewood gives a warmer tone has oils and larger pores, maple hard wood has very small pores not as hard as ebony . With these mid range pickups the mix fits. John playing blues I'm sure he wanted that smooth singing tone not the higher bite like most strats have unless you get certain pickups put in. They have various pickups to choose from but still limited. These pickups were made for John Mayer. Just like Fender has noiseless that sound like older strat pickups. Malmsteen had Fender put Dunlop stacked hum in his. They were 1st HS3 but really weren't a true humbucker. Took the noise away but didn't get the full benefit of a full sound of humbucker. I do like the pickups with the maple fretboard, and I like the scooped area to reach the llower frets. I can't get use to the sound of stainkess frets. I can hear the difference. I use to custom build guitars and wind pickups. I have 225 guitars. I own the 1st PRS that came out bought 7 of them. Have bought 2 others. But I own a lot of older Strats, Gibsons, 2 of my favorite go to guitars is a Ibanez RG550 without a pickguard. I like the sound of basswood with the pickups I have in it. And a guitar I custom built. That I can get 21 tones with. I have HSH in it just one volume and one tone which stays in 10. I'm going to change it to a volume so I can control all pickup volume and can actually change tone from volume, picking tech and fingering.

    Also depend on how you play , you can accentuate the highs by how you pick and finger notes,,, short quick picking & lighter fingering will bring more lighter sounds with highs.
    Tone = pick & fingering 😊

    Thanks for this great demo of two amazing guitars Tomo! Since it is not easy to find these guitars in stores nearby it is really helpful to see this comparison. On ordinary Strats I prefer a maple neck and I have to say that the same applies to the Silver Sky's. Hard to describe but I like the deeper, but at the same time more top end tone of it. Thanks again!
