Let's restore the gas tank and sending unit on the 1971 Olds Cutlass so the gauge works again

  • Time to drop the gas tank on the car as we have a gauge that is pegged way past full, this is a common ailment for cars of this age and looks like someone has either replaced the tank or the sender before. We also find some interesting things in the tank and do a bit of rust restoring with Rust Oleum Rust Restorer along with replacing the old rubber fuel lines. It's a dirty job but very rewarding as we also siphon out 12 gallons of gas and throw into the wife's Subaru. All the rubber hoses get replaced and this knocks out more scaly rust from the undercarriage of our restoration in California so it will never see another winter again.

    Brother, I had to stop at the 10 min. mark and do some introspection. I have a 12 year old son that I need to have out there wrenching on my car with me. (Some times I lack patience.) No joke....thanks for the life lesson! I just purchased a 68 Cutlass "S" and I need to change the sending unit. great video!

    Thanks for these videos! I recently inherited my fathers 1971 Cutlass when he passed away, so I'm in the process of restoring it. Gas tank is next on the list!

    Great video. I just replaced the gas tank in my 72 Nova. I bought some cheap yoga mats to work under my cars. It helps.

    A good product I found for surface rust is krud kutter works very well with a wire wheel spay on let sit hope to see you try it on further projects

    Nice job! I have a couple questions for you. I'm doing the same job on my Cutlass, unfortunately I didn't keep the original tank and bought a Dorman replacement tank so I couldn't compare the two. Did you make any measurements on how deep the tank was at the sender opening? Also did you notice if the Dorman sender/pickup was shorter than the original sender/pickup? My Dorman tank is 7" at the sender opening and my sender is only 5.5" deep so the float and pickup is 1/5" off the bottom of the tank. I appreciate any info you can share.

    Safety first… goggles before rust gets in your eyes. And either run it to near bone dry or drain the tank before loosening the straps. You had 100 lbs of fuel over your face. Otherwise a good video and thank you.
