wrote a song last winter, as I was on the brink of new decisions to move away from the town I established myself in for a while.
It had me reflecting on leaving (or deepen my ongoing reflection), all the forms of leaving, how it makes one feel, how others perceive it and what happens to relationships within these transitions of life.
Then I left a place I felt safe in w/ friendships&grounding (august), to go do something else I was feeling called to, packed up my life in the van, up to golden bay to live in a community.
Drove up the coast, and gave myself 4 days to drive through that transition, take the time to not rush the feelings. I was listening to phone recordings I had of band rehearsals from the first times, when I presented the guys with my songs last June, as we just started to play all together, each week I'd bring a fresh one.
You know when you listen to a version of something for the first time? And you actually get attached to that version with all its imperfections?
One night, in bed after a day's work on the land in golden bay(sept.), I started editing videos on my phone (got no computer) Mostly friends & mountain missions, which kind of represented what we had been up to that winter since lockdown had lifted. (few other earlier moments in there too) all of it is almost only outdoor Wanaka area. it's far from a recap of nz though, but hoping to share bits this way. posting it months later now as part of my last posts deeper reflections of 2 years in NZ...
This is the most home recording video/audio you can get, and I love it for that! Having made the video on my phone, and then losing some of the files, I couldn't finish editing it better and readjust defaults of syncing or export in a better resolution either so here we are! 😂
The song has made lots of progress since, and working now on getting it recorded, but yeah maybe I'll only ever love this version where you can't hear a word I'm saying haha
I came back to Wanaka now because I felt called to do more work with my songs with the boys and record in hopes of sharing more. I've been feeling a sense of urgency...
I guess the lesson here is, goodbyes are never really goodbyes...

Come listen to the siren song of more
Where past lives we all grieve
When we walk out that door
Remind you, of what you lose, when you leave
Oh I know, you think about it too
    ---
    Hurt people, (will) hurt people
    Now that's a theme
    Lost friends along the way
Though its not always as it seems
Let us feel the pull, oh down the rabbit hole
    Get closer to your soul
    ---
    Still learning to say goodbye
Don't matter how much I try
    Some times and people change
And even you wont stay the same
    We dont need to rearrange
what we've built in time, remains,
As long as I know, my own name
    -----
    Holding space, shedding old skins,
    renewed
Built thicker, or softer, as needed to
There are several versions of us in time
Oh quick before you change your mind
    -
Nothing ever too late, but dont wait too long
Remember feel everything when you're gone
    Everything born someday dies
Live in their hearts and their eyes,
    I promise,
    But it takes time to
    Learn to say goodbye
Don't matter how much we try
    Some times and places change
And even you wont stay the same
    We dont need to rearrange
what we've built in time, remains
As long as I know my name,
Well I can step out of this pain...
