I've been working on this in my spare time for 2 days.
I see everyone and their brother released similar coverage.
I put in too much work to not release it, so here it is...
Alcoholism is a cruel master.
Alcoholism is a disease. People who aren't alcoholics think that it's just weakness, or a moral failing, when it is actually a physical condition. Alcohol is a poison, and some people's bodies overreact to it such that it unbalanced their body the other way, so that they need to put more in to return to normal. Once they consume enough of it over time, the overreaction gets so serious that complete withdrawal of alcohol can cause seizures or even kill them.
I don't know what the DTs feel like, but I've had a couple of medications over time that caused problems with my nerves when I stopped taking them once I was better. It felt like all my nerves in my whole body had been dipped in vinegar. My whole body felt "sour" - to the point of it causing discomfort. It wasn't quite to the point of painful, but it still "hurt", constantly. And from what I understand, the DTs feel much worse than that.
The Judge has an absolutely brilliant sense of fairness, clarity and compassion.
God Bless this Judge . He has the Holy Spirit
Yeah i wish he were in the Supreme Court
I love Judge Simpson for this. You can see his empathy and compassion shine through as he’s talking to Mr. Heenan. It’s not an easy job, but Judge Simpson always does what’s right for the people. I feel bad for the man, sounds like his life has taken a turn for the worse. Hopefully some intensive treatment will help him.
He allowed him to talk, without all things…judgement. His compassion moves me 😞
I think that balance from the judge is why the defendant is so genuinely honest.
this is a pristine image of addiction.
he knows it's maladaptive. he knows he's rationalizing. but he's too ashamed to reach out to his support system.
he knows it destroyed his marriage. he knows it's why he can't see his sons. but they're already gone, and he has to cope with that emotionally.
he knows it pickles your liver, dries you out, makes you sick. he knows he's putting himself and the world in danger getting this drunk all the time. he knows he's killing himself. but he is addicted to alcohol.
more specifically, his brain is dependent on alcohol. his brain will tell him whatever it needs to in order to get more alcohol.
"this is just to make your hands stop shaking. it's not like you're having fun. it doesn't count if you're being pragmatic. if you're being pragmatic, then any amount that you drink is just to handle the physical symptoms. this is all a part of the process."
he's not willingly lying here. he's being as sincere as he can be, this far into active addiction. it's just that if the only alcohol left on earth was at the bottom of the sea, his brain would convince him he could breathe underwater.
he's sick.
Absolutely - I think people don't always get how mentally and physically dangerous and destructive alcohol addiction is - it is a slow-motion process of self-ending
And that's alcoholism!
I don't think he has a personal support network. He said he only has AA when the Judge asks him "Who's around you?".
Very well said, all sadly true
And, if treatment can put your life back together, and you find the underlying reason for your addiction, you will always remain an addict, and will have to remain vigilant for life.
Well said - there is a point with any addictive substance (drugs, alcohol, cigarettes) when you are no longer doing the drug, the drug is doing you.
Judge Simpson's compassion is on full display. We all love seeing him tear people up-especially those driving without a license-but this is what makes him a great judge.
Shame is one of the most painful emotions and possibly the hardest to overcome given how it manifests.
Shame causes guilt and self-hate, with frustration depression, anger, etc. and that leads to needing to blot out the upset.
It's a vicious cycle.
I think he was as honest as he could be. Also respectful to the judge.
He proves just because you suffer from the disease of addiction doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to conduct yourself poorly in court. Even if he’s piss drunk. As attorney I respect that. I feel really sorry for this guy.
@@Juniper122 Most people who show up drunk in court that I've seen come loaded with excuses. I was using shampoo with alcohol in it, someone gave me a drink at a party and I just drank it, alcohol somehow fell into my mouth... This guy "I drank all the hard seltzer I could find, door dashed some more, then chugged those." It's a refreshing change.
I'm over 8 years sober. I was him 9 years ago, the shakes, drinking continuously, lost family, lost job. We can recover, it is possible. I hope he does whatever he can to not pick up that first drink.
Its a fight everyday but soberness is great.
Most thoughtful and considerate ruling ever. This man has come to a point where neither he nor anyone around him is safe anymore, yet he is trying to be honest and wants to do the right thing. He just can't. Judge Simpson is so wise and respectful - I was in tears hearing him, and I'm a retired social worker.
Me too Mary - I'm also a retired Social Worker. The Judge is right - it's going to be tough, but his last remark was so correct and touched my heart - "we don't want to lose you".
This was a hard one for me too. This man is broken. It is clear that he wants to do better but isn’t able to do it on his own.
he drove drunk to court , so yeah he needs help
My grandfather told me “don’t think just because you’re knee deep in shit that it can’t get worse. Because, just one more step and you could be eyeball deep in shit.”
Everyone of us is one bad decision away from shitting in a bucket... I heard that on Hoarders once, and it's absolutely true.
Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know _nothing_ about.
Just keeping this one phrase in mind can change how you view the world.
Judge Simpson is such a wise man. He definitely cares for this man’s welfare and I think he made the right call to keep him in custody until he gets into treatment!
He is controlled totally by alcohol. the judge knows this and he’s trying to protect both him and the public from the consequences of alcoholism. I hope he gets the treatment he’s so badly needs.
Zoloft is for Depression, PTSD etc. In Judge Simpson's Eye's and Voice says he cares so much. I so wish I had someone in my life at this point that cared as much for me as I see this Judge Cares for the man.
Angela are you ok! I want you to know I care about you!
It also helps with anxiety and obsessive thoughts. My mom takes it for that reason.
He's really a great person.
Zoloft can be used for multiple different reasons.
Good people do care, Judge Simpson isnt unique but just an example of a good person. Too often a MH illness will try an convenience you otherwise, its a symptom and I have been there but Im glad to say not anymore. Got to find the path to recovery that works for you. Reach out, other good people are waiting and they have support groups set up but you have to find them, you have to put the effort in as its not a solution if someone else is doing it. You will make life long friends in those support groups because they are the only people that can relate to what you are experiencing. Now Im back with all my old friends, they just didnt understand, they still dont but thats not a problem anymore.
Angela theres people who care for you, your just not seeing the forest for the trees believe me.
AA literature says: 'we tried easier and softer ways to no avail". He knows his stuff, Judge Simpson.
Happy destiny, brother.
AA is a cornucopia of cliche.
@@user-so5tj4cp8u , and how many lives have you saved with your cornucopia of clichés?
Door dash at 7 am for alcohol😳
Shaking when he wakes up,his body is giving out warning signs.
The amounts are truly staggering in a scary impressive way.😖
I don't believe for a second he used Doordash. He drove and didn't want to admit to driving drunk AGAIN at 7am...
If he's that far gone, I hope his detoxing in custody will be monitored. Sounds like he is at risk for a really rough time physically these next few days.
Yeah. My uncle was an attorney and he lost his license because of his alcoholism. He passed away about a year ago because he lost his fight with alcoholism. I just hope this attorney gets the help he needs.
He lost his boys, not his voice. He probably got divorced before he went into treatment, and his ex got 100% custody of their boys.
Did I mishear that? It sounded like that comment was in context of some sort of verbal altercation from last night...which was his excuse for his binge... You could be right.
He mentioned a GAL. Sounds like he is going through a divorce or there is an on going custody dispute.
GAL is a Guardian at Latium. A neutral professional appointed by court to address the best interest of the children
@@LoneWolfUsul It's definitely boys, not voice. I heard boys before I read your note, and he says he lost them, later.
Yes, lost his boys, getting divorced, and also forced to resign his job and enter treatment. I can understand why Simpson is worried about not seeing him again. Sounds like he is hitting bottom
Oh my heart. That was me. I tortured my poor mother. At least she got to see me healthy for a few years before she died. Ugh.
It's used for depression. If they addressed their mental health as well, its not that sus
Anxiety as well. Both diagnosis seem to have similar brain responses.
Yeah, the generic name is sertraline and it's an SSRI, not a benzo. Not addictive as far as I know, but you do need to taper off to prevent major withdrawal symptoms. That said, he *did* have benzos and alcohol in his system, dangerous combination, especially for someone with depression.
@@notmyname327 Just maintaining his intake of alcohol itself is scary enough. Drop benzos on top of it yes, it's a very deadly combination as they both depress everything. Sadly, the SSRIs will do nothing for him until get gets sober. You're right, not addictive but the brain zaps you get if you just stop taking it are terrible. Taper indeed. Been there. It SUCKS but you gotta power through it. I feel for him.
Yeah Zoloft is an SSRI, my mom takes it for her depression. I take Prozac for mine (turned out to be related to untreated ADHD) I've tried other SSRIs in the past and none of them are medications you can get high on. They are hard to overdose on too (it can be done but it's difficult) which makes them great for depressed people. Basically they can't be abused, or even really misused.
@@notmyname327 Yeah, I think that's what killed Heath Ledger.
This man is not a bad person. Life dealt him some things and I don’t know what his life was like before his treatment and his relationship with his family… but if he doesn’t figure his addiction out, he’s gonna end up losing his life and perhaps that of another person. I don’t envy anybody in his life- he probably has left a wake of trauma. On the other hand, I truly hope he gets the help he needs. And that he can face it head-on. He has a great judge on his side that cares. Fingers crossed this guy makes it.
This is why I love Judge Simpson. He is more concerned about the life of the defendant than the laws he broke.
Judge Simpson, you are awesome...
As a 16 and 1/2 year sober alcoholic, if this guys is drinking all day and night, passes out , wakes up at 4am and starts drinking again knowing he has court that same day, he is at the end of his life. The tether will not stop him. Judge Simpson is very good at reading the situation and is right in not letting him out, he is saving this man’s life. 😊
What an awesome judge. I always liked him but I have a whole new respect for him. It would be great if more addicts had a person like this judge to keep trying to get him help and potentially save his life. I lost my brother to alcoholism. There are so many people who don't understand this horrible disease. I truly pray this man can see his way back to sobriety.
He may not see it now but one day he’s going to realize that Judge Simpson probably saved his life. This is why I love Judge Simpson. I wish there were more people like him.
Judge Simpson really is saving his life. I’ve been around enough alcoholics (genetic predisposition from both sides) to know that while the defendant THINKS he is telling the truth, alcohol will win in the end. The compassion shown by the judge and the rest of the court blew me away!
That got me so emotional when he said we don't want to lose u😢
The judge basically said 'your best thinking got you here' ...As an addict in recovery who speaks with many other addicts and sees the effects that drugs and alcohol have on the community... alcohol seems to be BY FAR the worst thing to stop using.... it's just so easy to get. There's no meth stores, doctors won't even give people who NEED opiates any opiates anymore.... alcohol is EVERYWHERE! It can kill you if you keep using it, and it can kill you if you use it too much and stop suddenly. So dangerous.
The quote from the Judge is "I've been doing this for a minute!"
I pray this guy gets to where he needs to be.
I haven't stopped sobbing. The compassion and care Simpson has for those who are humbled and desperate for help is impeccable. It's great to see Sinclair calm and compassionate.
If this makes you sob to the point you haven't stopped you'd better get yourself to a mental health professional, that's just not normal or well adjusted
20:24
"I am not doing it to be mean. I don't want to lose you. And I know if I let you out of here, there is a good chance we are going to lose you."
Wow - Judge Simpson is trying to get him through this. Fantastic and hopefully it will help.
The fact he drove to court drunk means he does it all the time
He's safer driving a bit drunk than with full on DTs.
That doesn't make it OK, I'm just saying that once somebody becomes this serious a drinker, they only get to "normal" with some amount of alcohol onboard.
@@timbirch4999I agree my Uncle was like this(he eventually died from that liver thing,I can't remember the name).
Cirrhosis???
I'm a retired SW. Zoloft is not sus. It is imperative to address mental health issues when addiction is part of recovery. Zoloft is better than self-medicating on other substances.
Zoloft IS self medicating.
I think this commenter meant self-medicating with alcohol. Mixing anti-depressants or antipsychotics with alcohol is very dangerous.
@@pattilemonhouse7911 "self-medicating" means using substances without medical supervision.
He's what's known as a high-functioning alcoholic-- my sis was one. The .08 he had at court, though legally drunk, he was not drunk. Most of us would be stumbling and slurring, but he clearly was not. He drank to stop the DTs, to get "normal" again.
Judge Simpson is literally saving his life -- his intervention, though severe (i.e., jail), gave the defendant more time to get back on the rails and get his life straight again.
My sister wasn't so lucky -- she died from her abuse. That guy, if he takes action now, will eventually be able to see his kids again, and likewise live a long sober life.
Did you drink them all?
"OH YEAH!"
His rehab, wasn't a rehab. They don't want you well. They want return clients.
bingo
A heavy drinker left to detox in the jail is a recipe for disaster. The physical repercussions can be devistating and permanent. ...🤷
As a patient I take Zoloft for anxiety and depression.
Judge Simpson is a true hero, role model, and a class act! What an amazing man to be so compassionate with all that he sees thru the days. Nothing but the utmost respect for him!
After 16 years sobriety, this guy is high risk for suicide. He has lost everything!
Mental health professional here! Yes, it’s common to make sure there’s a medication management plan in place, often through prescriptions being given during the stay at the rehab/inpatient MH and making sure the patient has an MD or Psychiatrist upon discharge.
In my life I have come to believe that 6 months to a year are needed to really get the help necessary to save their lives.
Wish him the best.
Relapses are sad and rough on the individual and everyone around them.
That's why he to go on to IOP for a period. Other options, perhaps better or in combination would be for him to have been sent from rehab to Sober living facility, and IOP.
I think its the mindset of each individual. What works for 1 person, may not work for the next.
It took me 3 months to quit drinking.
My choice, on my terms, & it worked..
I wanted a drink 1 day, & drove PAST the liquor store...I've never been back.
I've been sober for almost 19 years..💯
I hope that this guy gets the help he needs.. I've lost many friends to alcoholism, & its a horrible way to go.🥺
😢 alcohol ruins so many lives.
This judge possess the fortitude to make the decisions no one else can (or wants to)! My favourite judge! 👍👏
This touched me more than any video I've seen in some time.
Right I never get emotional over these type videos...of course I missed one of my meds by mistake this morning so I'm all in my real feels 😂
I think he said I lost my boys, not voice.
This is why I like watching this! Judge Simpson is a great judge! He has a great sense of humor and you can tell he does care about people!
This guy is at the precipice of change. Judge Simpson is amazing.
Judge Simpson is so kind and wise. And on a side note, he looks great in that yellow gold color.
Withdrawing from alcohol and benzos can kill a person, ive seen it many times as a paramedic. Sadly this man is dealing with both. He is in VERY REAL medical danger stopping cold turkey. My hope is he is medically detoxed (doesn't take very long), then he can begin treatment in earnest. Detoxing in jail is incredibly dangerous and can be fatal
Don't they have a medical staff? Also I believe Judge Simpson did what was best for him. I can't imagine drinking 15 Claws, that guy has a very high tolerance, and to make the decision to drive to Court. He ordered Door Dash, why not a UBER 😢
Omg when he said “I don’t want to loose you”, my eyes teared up and I lost it! Bless his heart!
Same. Alcoholism takes so many lives too soon! And so many brilliant people
he could die in jail waiting!! 😢 cold turkey detoxing alcohol is very dangerous.. please keep us updated on his case.
This judge is so incredibly gentle and still was able to help this man face his mistakes and addiction behaviors in a humane way. Judge Simpson must be special because I haven’t seen any judge this compassionate. He is a blessing in this man’s life!❤
Sounds like this man needs a medically supervised detox program, in my opinion. Judge Simpson’s compassion is above & beyond. Much respect & appreciation for him.
Needs medical/mental health inpatient care ASAP. Withdrawals are going to be H E double hockey sticks.🤢
Judge is right, guy looking for simple quick fix for show.😟
That's what scares me - alcohol detox while in custody - hopefully there will be some medical monitoring
Very impressive, thoughtful judgement.
zoloft is an anti depressant, that takes a month to work. It is not a drug to get high. It balances your mood and stabilizes you
When you are depressed it is hard to function. I have been threw this for 40 years. It is very difficult to find counseling or help. I feel for this guy. You can not drink when taken antidepressant . It could kill you.
Judge: ‘I don’t want to lose you.” Compassion and tough love from a great man.
As much as it would seem natural to mock this defendant, my heart goes out to him as he is clearly in a struggle that he is not winning. This guy is literally drowning in his alcoholism. Doesn''t excuse the fact that he is likely often driving drunk. Perhaps he is just doing this for the cameras, as he makes a lot of mistakes and bad choices, but this comes off as a serious addiction and truly hope this man gets better.
Getting sober is HARD, he's gonna hurt for a bit but then the clouds are gonna start to part and he WILL start feeling better, getting stronger day by day. The Judge is NOT just being cruel, he is genuinely trying to help this defendant, helping to save his life and when those clouds start to part and he, the defendant, starts to see clearer he will be thanking Judge. I've been there I'm talking from experience.
Judge Simpson’s compassion brought me to tears. He was absolutely wonderful with this gentleman. Judge Simpson is a gentleman and a scholar…..and a great jurist! We need more like him.
My father was a raging alcoholic. My parents divorced. He married another woman and she got him to stop binge drinking after a few years together with one sentence.
"Did you drink because your marriage was bad or was your marriage bad because you drink?"
They were married for over 35 years until he died of liver cancer. He obviously never stopped drinking, but he never let it become an issue with his wife.
I thought I wrote this comment in reply to someone else who had wondered if he was drinking because of his marital problems.
I didn't mean for it to be a standalone comment. You know, just me telling my life story without reason😂
That dude is struggling.
The most caring Judge I have ever seen and I watch alot of live court shows Thankyou Judge Simpson
Judge Brian Oakley is as well
I wish my daughter had a judge like this and wouldn't be on the streets still in her addiction. Thank God she doesn't drive. Honestly he's an awesome judge and good man all together to see what's really in front of him and how this man's life is worth saving. This was a very good call on the judge's perspective. God bless Judge Simpson.
This was so sad to watch. And, Judge Simpson's sincerity, compassion, and delicate handling of this case literally brought tears to my eyes. What a great man he is!
If it is a dual diagnosis treatment center they will send you home with meds.
when Judge Simpson said he was gonna revoke him, my heart stopped ! …
I kept hoping to hear that he’d get meds, because he’s bad enough that he could flat out die from a sudden quit 😮
thank YOU, ✨Wolfy darling
The nurses at the jail certainly understand alcoholics…
@@Shakaiharp
yes, that’s true I suppose …
I hope he makes it through his current life and gets back to a good life …
Do they get meds in jail? I’ve always thought they made people go thru withdrawal without them.
@@BrilliantAtTimes
I’m no professional, but I believe that drug addicts can go thru withdrawal without meds, but alcoholics can have life threatening consequences in going cold turkey without meds …
I'm dealing with alcoholism. Judge is right on everything.
I love this judge so much. He never fails to impress me with his compassion and fairness and genuine care for humanity.
Sounds like a dual diagnosis along with his addiction issue. Zoloft is for anxiety and depression.
Demons of addiction steal more than just your life...
I feel for his kids.
Thanks for this OSG, you can’t help but feel bad for him. I did see the first part somewhere else, but rewatched it here. You do good work, keep it up. Hopefully the defendant gets the help he needs before hurting others or himself.
45 days in treatment then gets out starts taking Zoloft, then drinks 15 white claws
Judge Simpson just SAVED this young man’s life !!!! You Judge Simpson are an Angel sent from GOD ! Thank you ❤
Please be sure and do an update on this case. I’m really hoping this guy gets sober. Great video.
Cannot start and stop medications like that (I take Paxil, which is similar to Zoloft and Prozac)). A doctor would most certainly approve, if contacted. SSRIs are not nearly as bad as the older neurological medications.
Getting his primary care doctor to do a refill after treatment is very easy with his discharge paperwork. A doctor wouldn’t think twice about refilling it with a visit. It is not a controlled substance
Zoloft doesn't work until you get and maintain levels of the mediine in your blood stream.
But the gap was rehab expected the entry to the IOP program which might adjust doses etc. But he didn't go that route, so in his slip back to drinking he let taking Zoloft lapse, but ready for court he got new script and took one dose. We see him choosing the hidden path each time.
Judge can remand him to a inpatient psych unit from court. They then can work with the lawyer and AA sponsor to bring him the needed paperwork to pay rent etc. And they can facilitate his transfer to rehab IF his self harm ideation is stabilized. ( psych RN here).
Zoloft is an SSRI (antidepressant), it is not a controlled substance and does not have abuse potential. Any inpatient facility, including rehab, should absolutely give a 30-day supply of any meds started during inpatient treatment. Especially if the person does not yet have an outpatient provider appointment with a psychiatrist. Though, that should be part of the discharge plan ideally.
Wolfie, I love what you do. I can’t say any better than that. Thank you for your contribution to the world. ❤
Wow, thank you
hi, so yes Zoloft is prescribed amongst recovering addicts, but VERY CAREFULLY due to potential for abuse
I love this man's honesty.
I do not remember seeing a judge being so patient and pious like that. I have been watching judge Simpson for a few days, I don't know why these videos popped up but I'm glad!
One more sub!
...this brought me to tears - this reminds me so much of my ex partner. I'm hoping, after 30 odd years, he remains sober as the road from drunk to sober is a hard one. Love you always...
Thank you for putting the hotline at the end.
I feel so sorry for him that he need to drink to stop his hand from shaking . Alcohol is the worse enemy you can have
This is a judge who truly cares about people.
Mr. Heenan if you ever find this video..... you are worth it.... your kids are worth it too but just know you CAN and you WILL show up for yourself....and by doing that they will see what persevering means! Best of luck and blessings on your recovery!
When I joined AA, I was told to attend 3 meetings a day. Nobody worth their salt would recommend 1 meeting a day for this extremely addicted individual. Seems like a nice guy who has turned a nice life over to alcohol.
No, he said, I lost my BOYS. I'm impressed how honest he is.
One of my favorite Chris Stapleton songs is “whiskey and you” a line that fits this is where he said “I drink because I’m lonesome, and I’m lonesome cause I drink.” Him saying he doesn’t have a support system other than AA automatically made that pop in my head.
Living with a recovering alcoholic and someone who's currently in his position but not as severe. It's hard. I hope he's able to achieve sobriety and get his life back on track eventually. I love judge simpson
Judge Simpson really does care about everyone thank you much for the upload
if i had to show up for this joke of a court system id be drunk too.
I feel super super sad for this attorney. My uncle was my inspiration for becoming an attorney. When I grew up I found out that he was disbarred because of his alcoholism. After practicing he became a legal librarian. We lost him last year to kidney disease.everyone out here suffering from the disease of addiction you’re not alone. This is very close to home. I have so much experience dealing with this. Judge Simpson is gracious, understanding with empathy. He knows how to make those tough choices and tough sentencing procedures, bcause he actually cares about these human beings who stand before him.
This young man is in a tight spot. I’ve been where he is right now I sincerely hope and pray he can gain freedom from this terrible addiction. And God bless Judge Simpson for his compassion.
Zoloft is an antidepressant. An SSRI to be specific. It is not a benzodiazepine however. Zoloft is not what is making him test positive for “benzo’s”.

He’s going to take his life if he doesn’t get help and immediate! Judge Simpson handled this case amazing, shows heart!
Judge Simpson has so many sides and never ceases to amaze. There is no easy path to stop drinking, self determination and a strict regime only way!

Sobriety is a marathon not a sprint, some sections of the course are harder than others and you will stumble and suffer along the way, but you have to keep working at it and building your support team to keep you on course and keep you honest to yourself.
Withdrawal is brutal, you feel like you're dying physically and mentally you feel the weight of all problems and your past is crushing you, but you can get help to get you through it and it will not last forever, you will get to the other side of it.
It gets better and so do you, if you pursue it.
I so appreciate Judge Simpson. He is kind, fair, and tough-and wise.
