    Episode Notes:
    1. Gameplay captured via the Mega SG at 1080p.
    2. I still own all my original copies of the 16-bit Road Rash series.
    3. The Sega CD got a hybrid of the 16-bit Road Rash games you see here, and the 32-bit version first released on the 3DO.
    4. I always liked the content of Road Rash 3, but felt it looked significantly worse than the first 2 games.
    5. Road Rash is still quite affordable on the Genesis. I've seen complete copies in good shape go for as little as $15.
    6. The SMS version, which was only released in PAL territories and Brazil, tends to go for much more.

    "It was like nothing else" sums it up for me. There still isn't anything quite like Road Rash. I started with Road Rash II and, no matter how older I grow, I still find myself coming back to fire up the Genesis now and again just for that game alone. I've had the chance to play the other entries on the Genesis too, as well as the unique Sega CD version.

    Absolutely love Road Rash 1, when my dad came home with a brand new megadrive in 91 he had 2 games, Sonic and Road Rash. I was all excited about Sonic but over the months I grew bored of it but Road Rash had my back, I played this game for years trying to beat it. Never could though, time and time again I would get my ass handed to me on the later levels.
    Even to this day when my dad visits, I set up the old Mega Drive and fire up Road Rash, me and my dad both take turns racing the tracks, still just as much fun now as it ever was.
    Still can't beat it though...

    this first road rash is easily the best of any road rash, easily the best music and just the overall feel of the game is legendary. the EA originals of the early 90s were amazing. madden and pga tour golf, etc. the manuals were like mini books, so many pages. the games were super deep. the 3 games mentioned above offered literally hundreds of hours of gameplay without getting old.

      I agree. Rob Hubbards “Satriani-like” soundtrack on the original game was amazing, in particular that lead guitar sound that sustains into feedback... and the “backwards guitar” sound on Pacific Coast. Also, notice how the rear view mirrors in the original properly animate the yellow lines in the middle of the road... unlike Road Rash 2 and 3.

    The first time I ever heard anything about road rash, was somewhere in 1992. Back then there was a television show called powerplay in my country, which showed and reviewed new and released games for different platforms of the time. At the end they had a small completion between 2 kids who tried to beat one another for a price by playing a videogame. One episode they played road rash II and I was blown away by the visuals and I had to get that game. Loved the music as well. Road rash 3 did the same thing to me. Got it the second it came out. Then in 1997 I got the gameboy version of road rash one and I remember playing it whenever I had the chance and loving the music(as weird as that may sound). A few years back I got road rash 1 for the mega drive and the gamegear and even the gameboy color version.
    I stopped liking road rash after the saturn(3DO,playstation)version,because the feeling or "soul" was missing. I stopped caring about the franchise but I stil go back RR 2,3 and Gameboy RR to get that nostalgic feel.

      @@dellzincht It's been many years since I finished the game so my memory of the details of the ending may have some inaccuracies. However, I am 100% certain that when you complete the final track and place (I may have placed #1 in all the tracks), you end up winning the girl, Natasha. Right after you finish the final race, you see a side view of your bike coming to a stop with another bike, Natasha's, also coming to a stop. Natasha removes her helmet, tosses her hair (this is how you know it's her), gets off her bike, gets on the back seat of your bike, and then you ride off. It's possible you only get this ending if you don't attack Natasha during the game.

    Road Rash 2 was my favourite, the original Road Rash had indestructible Cop Bikes.
    Road Rash actually made you feel like you were connected to your character and the others, I remembered being 14 years old playing this game and it was the main reason I wanted a Sega Genesis. I don't think any game has replicated that feel for me, it was so immersive.
    Road Rash 3DO Sega Saturn and PlayStation were the prettiest, didn't like the graphics in Road Rash 3, it was that time where digitized was the biggest new thing...
    I actually completed the original Road Rash, one of the hardest games to complete ever, it felt like I accomplished something huge because it was so difficult. Level 5 Redwood Forest! Ouch!

    I had Road Rash 2 growing up, and it was one of the few games my dad really got in to. He could never beat level 5 either, so he used a cheat to unlock the Wild Thing bike, an absurdly fast and well handling bike. He had to start at the beginning again since the cheat had to be applied before entering a progress continuation password, but it went quick. My dad was so pissed when he finally finished it, but instead of the ending a character chewed him out for cheating and said “see you in hell”.

    And the game is indeed hard as hell. Never beat ANY Road Rash game. Tried and tried and tried. Genesis, 3DO, Playstation, none of them. Thorn in my gaming side. But still love them all...

  • @googleboughtmee
    @googleboughtmee Před 5 lety

    I liked how it felt like a real world, like a proper 3D game before we had them. Unlike virtually every other 2D raster effect racing game, you could go backwards along the track (or run on foot all the way to the end!) and the other opponents and civilian cars really exist. In Hang On, the moment you crashed you would be overtaken by a group of bikes that clearly only just spawned, and at the start the group zooms away from you, and you never see any of them crash. In Outrun if you overtake a truck and then slam on the brakes, that truck never goes past you, it ceases to exist the moment it's off screen. Almost every game used obvious tricks like this that left you feeling like you're the only thing that exists in the world. Road Rash was different, you could follow the cars forever, see your rivals crash by themselves, build convincing leads on them, and they even remembered what you did to them.

    I LOVED Road Rash on the Genesis, I spent the majority of a whole summer with a couple of buddies playing the hell out of Road Rash 3. I actually just bought Road Redemption on the Xbox trying to get my Road Rash fix, decent game but doesn't really have that same Road Rash feeling.

    Given how much you love Road Rash, I'm curious to see what you think about Skitchin', which could be pretty much be described as "Road Rash on rollerblades."
    It does do some stuff different though (hold up to three weapons, a trick system, hidden course warps that can send you forwards OR backwards in the level order. bonus courses if you race fast enough/knock down enough opponents, the eponymous skitching/slingshotting mechanic), but all in all I felt it was a pretty good game, and people who like Road Rash will probably like that too. And actually rather excellent music by Jeff van Dyck, right down to sampled guitars!
    It's also very, very '90s. So '90s it hurts!

    Some advice from someone who has completed Road Rash 1-3 on the Genesis, and Road Rash on the PSX:
    When it comes to stage 5; if you think you’re going slow, you need to slow down. As long as you keep the top 8 or so riders in sight, they’ll make a mistake eventually and allow you to sail past without them forcing you off the road.

  • @happyspaceinvader508
    @happyspaceinvader508 Před 5 lety

    You don’t need to beat the tracks in Road Rash 1 or 2. The first line of the save code represents the race positions, and so long as you don’t change their total, you can change them around. For example, come 5th in one race, so you’ve got something like 00050 and you can change it to 11111, which means you’ve come first in every race!. This moves you on to the next level. There’s also a similar way you can hack the last two digits of the next line to boost your credits.

    For me, the music was one of the best things about the game, and the game was excellent. It's different than SOR easy-on-the-ears jazzy tunes (which were also standing out at the time)... Most games at the time more or less followed a single melody and had other tracks in a lower volume...
    But the soundtrack for Road Rash is very rock/metal ish and like is often the case, the instruments are battling each other all cranked up and not always doing the same thing. But if you bring it up with musicians they will tell you, everything is in tune and playing coherently (like Cliff Burton's bass would play a different melody than James Hetfield's guitar, but still the same kickass song).
    Of course, Rock n' Roll Racing was also like that, using 16-bit for "real" songs but people probably never thought much of it, since the tunes were well known. To this day people are still making high-fidelity covers of the Road Rash series, as well as the hard grunge Skitchin', and you can really see(listen) how awesome the music is!
    I recommend that next time you play, just listen to Dean Harris Composer and Michael Sobin's covers. Or, if playing Skitchin', lookup "hellfireseb'. Cheers.

    Road Rash 1, 2 and 3 and Road Rash on the Sega Saturn/3DO and PS1 are Crom tier. Road Rash 2 on the Megadrive I played the most and prefer it over the original game, which is still good. But man, Road Rash on the Saturn is by far my favourite. But like you, I never completed the original Road Rash and the series in general can get pretty hard in the later races, mostly due to the speed of your new bikes. Great video man, those memories. I even have the short novel to Road Rash 1 which is a great read.
