    Today is the birthday of a friend of mine that passed away in 2022. He was the biggest Road Rash fan that I ever met. He played all the games and desperately tried to enjoy all the "spiritual successors".
    Today my heart is filled with all the great memories of playing Road Rash with David. Thank you. This is a wonderful retrospective.

      The potential for this as a reboot is huge, so it amazes me it has never happened. Especially with the 90s nostalgia wave, it would be perfect to set it in the era of the original titles and have it span California, the US and then the world as you levelled up. Needn't be open world, either. Just hand drawn art and that solid 2D style that made the originals much more appealing than the final 3D era.

    Speed Kings (2003) released on GC, PS2, and Xbox and developed by Climax Brighton/Racing is a pretty darn good nod to Road Rash with a lot of the same feel just in a fully realized 3D world on 6th gen consoles. It even has the "slide mechanic" mentioned in the video.

      Came to the comments about to mention the same thing. I think it's a better game than the contemporary reviews suggest (all pretty 6/10 stuff). Admittedly, the aesthetics are kinda boring, it's a very gray and brown game. The visuals don't really suit the fairly comical gameplay, but other than that it's pretty hard to find fault. Maybe it's not really that flawed and it was just a formula that was on the way out by 2003.

    • @nikescar
      @nikescar Před 7 měsíci

      I should also mention Jacked (2006). It is more heavily inspired by Road Rash (it has melee weapons) but ends up being a worse game than Speed Kings

      @@xman777b This is true, but when EA got the license, I’m guessing the developer wanted to make a Syphon Filter like game and for what its worth, it’s really fun. As for Goldeneye, as iconic it will always be, Nightfire is a much better game and even Everything or Nothing, a 3rd person game, is a masterpiece and sucks those got blasted because, “It’s not Goldeneye”, when Perfect Dark surpassed Goldeneye on every level and Rare knocked it out of the Park. Sadly, Perfect Dark Zero was a letdown.

    I really liked Road Rash 3D back in the day, the open world was like nothing else I had played at the time. Having grown up on the series from the genesis, it was really something, I liked the music too. Sad that it’s gone mostly forgotten. It wasn’t great, and I remember it feeling rough compared to other racing games, but still great in its own right.

    Road Rash 64 has a special place in my heart. My friend and I used cheat codes to unlock all tracks and bikes. We would choose the hardest tracks with the fastest bikes and chaos ensued for hours. I really liked the physics system, where your rider and bike go flying. One of my most cherished gaming memories. Oodles of fun.

    Christmas 1998, I was 8 years old and "Santa" got me a brand new Sony Playstation and a copy of Road Rash 3D, which was the first video game I ever owned - besides a hand-me-down NES that was given to me a couple years prior with a few games.
    My friend had a Playstation and we had played "Motoracer" together which is what made me want a Playstation. I asked Santa for a Playstation but I couldn't remember the name of the game, so I just asked for "the dirtbike and motorcycle racing game".
    My parents did their best and found Road Rash 3D. Of course it wasn't the right game, not even close, but I quickly fell in love with it anyway. I ended up getting Motoracer the following Christmas, and I absolutely loved both of those games in their own ways.
    I'm 33 now and still have my original copies of Road Rash, Motoracer, and many more games I got over the years like Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Spyro, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 3 and a bunch more.
    The Sony Playstation was just magic to me and still is.

A huge part of the charm of these older games was they were simplistic and ran on hardware that was challenged to run them - and to us players, it was an incredible miracle. Road Rash 64 did have a 60 FPS Mode on real hardware, when you use an expansion pak and you don't enable the high-res mode it will instead increase the 30 FPS of the default resolution mode to 60 FPS. Combine that with N64 de-blur mods & dither filter removal through gameshark codes the end result can be way better than what is represented here. Since framerate mods from the genesis games were taken into account then the N64 improvements (both official and unofficial) should also have been fully mentioned. Other than that this video was phenomenal and I enjoyed every minute, just wish the N64 part could have gotten as much research time as the 16-bit part.

    As the coder who did the Gameboy version I can confirm that you are correct that it should have a "demo" feel as the whole thing was based on a demo Road engine I originally did that altered both x and y scroll registers on a scanline basis (that might be why some emulators don't like it). The demo had much more emphasis in hills and valleys and was trying to emulate "Stunt Car Racer" gameplay (if not the graphics). It became Road Rash when we sent the demo to Gary Bracey at Ocean and he asked us to do the conversation
