    My grandfathers custom BMX frames were all brazed butted tubes and they got hammered. He made his own jigs too. The codtly bits were the reaming tools and expanders from campy. People get confused with brass and silver soldering. I knew guy that made a bed out of fancy tubing only to have it collapse at 3 in the morning much to his wife's horror. He used silver solder😮

    I had plans to build a jig way back in the 80's, it was on the list but it came after speaker stands and a mahoosive tripod for a telescope all which got built. Sadly the decimation of British heavy industry back then beat me to the draw and the engineering workshop I was in got closed down and sold off for scrap. Sad times.
    Always great to hear Master Quick talk bikes though!

    What is the advantage of the sintered stainless over 3D printing in wax and having the part investment cast in stainless? Generally the sintered stainless is more brittle than cast and a pig to work on afterwards if you need to drill or tap due to the hardness.

    • @quirkcycles
      @quirkcycles Před 5 lety +1

      The pieces are printed with an internal lattice and have a wall thickness between 0.5-0.75mm making these pieces much lighter than cast ones. Also no need to make moulds plus changes can be implemented instantly.

    Another great video. Would love to hear Robs view on stainless frames. Avoids the corrosion issue but are there any drawbacks in terms of weld quality and fatigue?

    • @quirkcycles
      @quirkcycles Před 5 lety

      Stainless has the same qualities as steel but with higher corrosion resistance and material hardness. Because of this it is much harder to shape meaning there are limits to designs. It’s also two to three times more expensive and harder to weld.
