Had a 96 Mk 1 2.2 Exec & it was an absolute tank. I got it 2nd hand & had it for almost 9 years. The MOT each year was never an issue. Until last week it failed for corrosion in the suspension & chasis plus power steering issues. We scrapped her & updated to a newer model, which is a great improvement & drives well. I can't recommend the Honda CRV enough there great cars.

I’m glad you mentioned the clutch judder. I got a 14 plate 1.6 crv 3 months back and does exactly that, a little clutch judder when cold. Glad to hear it’s nothing to worry about 👍

I have the 1.6 64 plate and have the same cold clutch judder . You always tend to think worse case scenario, like oil seals leaking oil into the bell housing and contaminating the clutch. It is comforting to know that other owners have experienced this problem and is nothing serious.

Honda is just great value for money. I had a civic for 11 years and last year got a AWD 2.0l 2017 CRV. The clutch judder is a bit of pain, but otherwise the car has been phenomenal.

If your using the car for really short journeys turn your lights on main beam in stead of the day time running lights that way your alternator will charge the battery by creating the 14 volts needed, I found out the hard way, lol

  • @pwilg2024

I have a crv-4. About the battery, the cause is probably Honda dual load system, which means it often does not load the battery to keep the battery at an more fual consumption optimal x % load state.
But that is not good for your battery life.
You can easily monitor it by measuring the voltage at the power sockets while driving . Very often I find the Honda deciding ,even after a start, using the seats heating or a long drive to not load the battery ( and my battery is old and is in poor state). I am an engineer myself and found it very amazing, as maintaining a battery well is a big reliability thing.
Fortunate there is a way to solve this Honda intelligent dual load problem: Turn your lights on. Then it will always go in 14.1volt loading.

I passed my driving test at 53 and our first car (after being pointed in the right direction) is a mk2 pre face lift CRV (2003). It’s a 2.0 petrol auto and after 22 months of owning it and just over 20k miles later we’ve had to dish out nearly £3k to get it in a position where it’s not being worked on. After driving it on the motorway after buying it way back in March 2022 just two days after a clean advisory free MOT we had it checked over by a Honda specialist (10 days later) where they found several faults, one being a stuck caliper (dealer said the noise was from the roof bars on the test drive) and due to the stuck caliper it then needed new discs and pads. Also the front shock was leaking oil and that the rear prop shaft was missing (meaning is isn’t a AWD but just a front wheel drive only) since then it’s had two new O2 sensors,a new third party CAT, a third gear sensor and like you mentioned in this video the Compressor had failed but not before shelling out for a new Condenser. The only other expense has been a full set of Yokohama all season tyres at £500. It’s currently showing 133,600 miles on the clock and it’s due its next MOT next week but I’ve noticed a judder in reverse when I turn the steering wheel left or right, just hoping it’s nothing serious. Then only downside we’ve found owning a CRV is the MPG and road tax. At £395 it’s almost Range Rover standard 😂 But I have to say,the K20A engine is amazing, considering it’s got 2T to pull.

Wow,! Another fantastic review mate. As a Honda enthusiast for 20 years owning 13 hondas from accords, civics diesel and type r. Now own a 1.6d. tech, civic excellent car, but I've had 2 and both had emission warning light, caused by a lambda sensor. COST TO FIX.. £600 PER SENSOR.. The only fault I've ever had on all my 13 hondas in 20 years so it was a shock.

Great guide. Have had a mk4 since it was 6 months old and it's now 10yrs old and been super reliable. Don't really agree with battery comment as I'm still on the original one !. I do know that if you connect phone the bluetooth seems to drain it... would definitely recommend one and over 107 k the 2.2 has averaged 46mpg.

Thanks for the video, as we live in western Canada, and have the 2014 CRV. Yes, our car every once in a while (has for 2 years now) made that wee rattle, but it's seldom and something we've just gotten use to, and hasn't affected the drivability of the car in the least. I've heard of two fellows that changed their actuators, and within a couple thousand km's, it's returned again. One fellow has said he puts a wee bit higher viscosity oil when he does oil changes, so the oil tends to stay in the area's it's needed, and it solved his rattle issue, albeit I don't know if it's returned or not, as it was mentioned some time ago. We have the 2.4 version with the automatic, now at 80,000 'miles' (we bought our CRV preowned in the U.S.) as we bought a Class A diesel motorhome, and the Honda CRV is towed behind the motorhome, and has been for many thousands of miles, with no issues, so 2014 is the last year that towing like this is possible we're told! So far, after the 5 years we've had ours, we've only put 1 battery in the car, and windshield wipers, and that's it other than fuel. I agree that they're a great car to own, albeit out EX version is a little light on options, in that 'navigation' would have been a nice choice, but we have had such great luck with this car, it can be overlooked.

The only issue where there is a real winter with snow and some salt on roads, might be corrosion. Steel elements under the car and body elements are not very well prepared for that. The effect is that after 10 of use you can find some corrosion bubbles outside, and generally red coloured chassis

I've just bought a 2014 Honda CR-V 1.6 Diesel with 120 PS with 96k km on the clock a view days ago. The efficiency is great. On the way back home from the dealership (400 km) it averaged 5.5 ltr/100 km. I was driving 120 kmh most of the time. Great for a car with that size.

I have the pre facelift 2.2 diesel, 6 spd manual, and I concur with everything you say, right down to the juddery clutch when cold. The car has 74,000 miles on it, and has been absolutely bulletproof, reliability-wise. The 2.2 diesel also pulls like a train, especially in 4th, 5th and 6th gears, with a lovely wave of torque making overtaking effortless. It is being changed this week for the facelift, 1.6 160bhp diesel, with the 9-speed auto. It's 2015, one single lady owner from new, full Honda service history, and is like new, and supplied by the motor group I work for, so I can buy with confidence. Really looking forward to getting it. It will be my 3rd CRV. I've looked around at other makes, but not of them do so many things, so well, as the CRV, so, why change?

What a great review, really comprehensive and from a Honda fanboy, I was so chuffed you praised this car. I live out in the sticks in Angus and I think this car will be ideal. We’ve had the mark one and mark two and they were better than any of the competition. I fancied a change and got a mark 3 RAV 4, which my wife liked and it looked good and was reliable, but when it finally started playing up, it had the potential to be expensive, so we sold it off for parts. However, overall build quality, I think the CRV felt like a premium product in comparison and much bigger inside. The term ‘scratchy plastics’ was made for the mark 3 RAV4, not a fan I’m afraid. Our main car at the moment is a 2017 Honda Civic with the 1.6 idtec and I’ve gotta say it’s the best car I’ve ever had, mega reliable, amazing economy and smooth and quiet, far better than any Golf I’ve had. We need a bit more room, even though the Civic boot is huge, I’m looking at shifting stuff regularly and this model of CRV couldn’t be better for our needs. I think we will be buying one in the next couple of months, so your video has just confirmed that we are just about to make the right choice, many thanks!

I had an 11 plate diesel auto EX up until two years ago and it was probably the best car I have ever owned. It had done 115,000 miles when I sold it and it still drove like new. The only problem I had was a leaking power steering pipe. Brilliant car, just changed the oil once a year.

Thanks for this informative video. I'm looking at getting a CR-V around 2016 model VTI-L with the 2.4L engine. (I live in Australia by the way) as my big 4L 6 cyl is just getting to expensive for me to run. I won't go beyond the 2016 as I don't want the 1.5L turbo. I heard too many people say they are to too underpowered and the 2.4L can run rings around the 1.5L in both performance and fuel economy. I'm also going for an Auto as my left knee is in too much pain to work a clutch all the time.

Picked up a 2.2 iDTEC auto about 6 weeks ago. Lovely car generally (despite the fact that the battery must have been on it's last legs because I've had to replace it). But you've got me worried now. I drive at a very leisurely pace and I've just started to notice some juddering when the CVT tries to make up it's mind before changing up. If I gas it a bit it, it'll kick down and pick up the pace normally, but something's not right there.

I have a December 2013 (as per the build plate) Mk4 with the 2.0 litre, 5 speed auto. It's dull to drive but that's OK because I'm an old man !
Complaints: as the presenter said, the battery is tiny, but that won't be a problem until it fails. The only thing I really dislike is that the headlamps are pretty dim. (Not just my CR-V: Mrs Next Door bought one and got some uprated globes after just a couple of weeks. I'm a cheapskate and I'll wait until one blows before I swap them.)
The aircon is not as cold as I'd like: I'm going to get it re-gassed (because I live in Aus, and it was 40C last week).
Otherwise I have had no problems in the two years I have owned it, other than the catches that release the back seats both broke within a week of each other. Just a bit of plastic suffering "10-year-old-itis" Lot of buggering around, but fixed with a couple of cable ties, so as cheap as you can get.
Overall - over 16,000 km - I get 8.6 kilometres per 100 litres. which equates to 33 MPG
Would I buy another? Definitely, but I'm hoping this one will last me out !

Great video. We have sold thousands of Crv’s and agree with pretty much all you said. A couple of things. If you get a bit of judder prior to the auto box changing gear on the 5 speeds a really simple ATF oil change sorts it ! I had one which was very noticeable and had been left like it for years. I changed the oil drove it for a while then changed it again and it completely cures it. But most only need one change.
Re the clutch judder which is most prominent on the 1.6 diesels, if you raise the revs in third or fourth gear and allow it to ‘slip’ for a second or two you can take away the judder for a while too
    Keep up the good work

It’s just bomb proof, cheap motoring, super smooth, economical and very low depreciation. I don’t mind that but someone told me I would need the wiring harness to, is it possible to get done? My car is so beautiful so reliable. I have it all decked out. Brilliant guide, very helpful. I have one question though: how is seat comfort for long rides?
I'm replacing car just because of seats. Used to have Zafira B since 2005 until last year, which was amazing on long drives, then bought a slightly used Zafira C. Seemed good at test drive, but seat ended up being absolutely horrible on long drives, eventually causing health issues. After a year of ownership, I can barely even sit for 1 hour in that garbage. Now I look very carefully at seats, CR-V and Forester are the only viable options so far with what seems to be very comfortable seats. Would be nice to hear about seat comfort from owners.

I've just bought one with 120 PS. I wouldn't call it underpowered, even though I also own a bmw 335i with 360 PS. Of course the Honda isn't a space rocket, but it's more than enough to drive comfortable from A to B and the gas mileage ist great for a car this size.

I think the major issue is to keep regular oil change. At least every 10k km, that's what i do. It certanly prolongs chain life. I have 1.6 diesel 120km. As for 125k i have had one problem with charging. Alternator went down and that all folks for now! I do not think IT is to week engine for this car. IT is more important IT Has 300nm od torqe. And if you keep fixed 90km per hour you will get under 4.5 per 100km. Cheers!

I've just bought a 2017 2l petrol automatic 5gear and to be honest I am quite dissapointed with the engine and performance overall. I even thought if there is not something wrong with the engine, as it accelerates really poorly. On a highway I need to downshift manually from 5th to 3rd to finally start to accelerate. And the consumption goes below 8l/100km only occasionally.
Is it normal or am I too spoiled when coming from 2l diesel vw passat which accelerates instantly and takes around 5l/100km? :)

      Totally normal 💯
Remember she weighs nearly 1.5 Tonnes.
They should have put a 6 cylinder plant in them ,
That would have smoothed out the weight issue hands down.
Another thing, there fussy with breathing, so don't use aftermarket Cats ect...
And stay away from tuning up, ya making that little engine work even harder, pulling all that weight.
But what it lacks in economics on the cash side of things, you've got one of the most reliable and safest vehicles around.
