Honda Engineers in 2013: Should we test thr AWD before we sell it?
Honda CEO: Nah. She'll be right
THIS is the content I scour CZcams for in the midnight hour.
Same. Right now.
I said no no no.
Wow, great video! Looks like I'm going to keep my 3rd gen after all
I hear you, if you have the 2.4 . Those K series are meant to be one of the best 4 cylinder engines ever made😁
Yes indeed!
This test was needed since seeing for first time ,good job ,should do all gens of AWD cross overs !
Actually I'm not surprised. I use third generation as my daily car and results reflect my experience. I drive mine off the beaten track from time to time in moderate terrain and indeed, if at least two wheels have some traction car moves forward, no matter, if it's sand, snow or mud. The only problem is with relatively low ground clearance, on the other hand it shines on solid roads.
same here, 3rd gen besides low ground clearance the awd is decent and don't really need any more. maybe someday a proactive system like in the acuras and Pilot sawd ot vtm4
after watching tests videos like these at first I was sad as I was forced to buy the 3rd gen crv by my parents instead of XU30 harrier that I wanted, now I thank them as my money was well spent for my first car...

Very interesting video. I have a 2012 AWD. I never have taken it off road, but it has done really well in snow. Even the other day, we had a lot of snow/slush and I took it out to test the new Firestone Destination L2's. I kept hitting the throttle hard for a dead stop and could accelerate with little to no drama.
The 2013 AWD sends thoughts and prayers to the wheels with traction. It looks like it's not even trying :D
Lol. *Thoughts and Prayers* ..🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Thats a typical bereavement statement...
Good demonstration. Managed to find some fresh snowy hills this years in my mk3 and was really quite impressed - AWD kicked in seamlessly and did a great job (on all-season tyres). Just don't take it too far off road.
Wow a very informative video about how various Honda CR-V generations perform . My rating is good , bad , great
Im new to your channel and must say its very interesting to see all these differences in every AWD systems. Not sure where to put this request but here it is! It would be nice to see how compares the different systems of subaru. for example a manual vs a cvt ( forester or outback or crosstrek or impreza) vs wrx vs sti. Your channel is great by the way!
Thank you! When it comes to Subaru - so far we couldn't find any with manual transmission, but sooner or later we will find some 🙂
3rd Gen. I glad I didn’t trade mine in for a newer one. Very interesting results. I’m thinking I need front and rear lockers now.
Super test. Dzięki.

Nice the rear brakes are glowing in the gen 3
No, that's a reflection of red car on the background.
Decent test but 3rd gen test driver always stepped on the gas while the 4th gen always let the car slowly accelerate and then just kept peddling the throttle. Crvs are great vehicles!
Yeah, I noticed that too. 4th gen kept starting off slower then speeding up.
I came back to this fantastic video because now i am more experienced with honda awd and i found a trick how to bypass that all open diff weakness. While accelerating, gently apply brakes.
But that's what the system should do.

I've got a 2014 CR-V AWD and it's been great in the snow thus far. I've been impressed how quickly it'll send power to the right wheels when it sense's traction loss. I don't think they changed anything from 2013-14 so I'm a little shocked to see it do so badly here.
There's low friction cooficient on snow, so not much torque is needed to spin the wheels without grip, that's different situation, much easier for the clutch-pack. Another thing is that the system should send the power to the right wheels before traction is lost, Honda was advertising it as proactive, not reactive.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Ah ok gotcha. Well it's definitely reactive in my case...it's a quick reaction tho I'll give them that. I've been in some AWD vehicles that make you question if it's even truly AWD.
@@bravedirtyhawk5912 Can you name those vehicles? 🙂
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers
Sure the particular vehicle was a buddy of mines 05 Saturn Vue AWD that got stuck quite a few times ... @@bravedirtyhawk5912 Thanks. I think I haven't seen any Saturn car, ever 🙂 They are not available in Europe under that name.
This is really interesting! We have a 2010 with the 2.4 liter (Canadian) and it is interesting to see that something got worse in the Gen4 model and then back to at least about the same with the latest generation.
Funny that Honda doesn't do a test like this with the engineers on board to make the system work better.
Some years ago there was a lot of mess about weak awd system in 4th gen, including Honda ridiculous "answer" etc.
In 5th gen the system can send 57% more torque to the rear than in 4th and it is also proactive (3rd is only reactive).

I've heard conflicting reports so don't quote me, but supposedly the 4th gen system sends only 25% of power to the rear wheels, and 2017 onward it was improved to 40%. It's officially called "Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control" and both Honda and Acura (non-SHAWD) use the system.

I have a 2007 with 124k miles. Was considering upgrading to a 4th gen...maybe not!
I think 4th gen just works more as an economy road car by moving the front wheels first and then the back ones
Skills, driving technique is another different thing
The biggest problem with the 3rd gen is that when you turn off the VSA (ESP) you also turn off the traction control and you get no electronic assist or simulated LSD.
It works the same in 4th.

Well, some of these Honda tests make me angry but 100% of them make sense in the context of real driving situations
What kind of awd transfer 1% of the torque to the rear wheel? All wasted space, more weight and components (also money)
On a roller system I guess that might seem true but in the rear world the all-wheel drive one absolutely murders the front wheel drive one in snowy conditions. Even with the underpowered 2.4 07 CRV with the VSA off it's a car you can totally toss around

The 5th gen did surprisingly well despite the CVT transmission
For this test the CVT transmission would have NO affect on the results. It’s driven completely by the dynamics of the AWD system. I swear people need to realize that CVT transmissions from reputable car companies (Honda and Toyota) are reliable and good. They do NOT affect awd performance. Your comment was full of misinformation and a lack of awareness.
@@BullyCanadian Not saying they aren’t reliable. I’m speaking of the low range capabilities of a CVT they tend too be a little weaker then a traditional transmission. Tuned cars have more hp and torque than stocks. And maybe the manual 4th gen CR-V doesn't have enough constant torque to send to the rear wheels, or the clutch is interfering with the reactive AWD system. However, the 2.4 and the 1.6 diesel CR-V should have enough low end torque to distribute to the rear

Trzecia generacja to dual-pump, mechaniczny układ dołączający tylną oś w przypadku uślizgu przedniej. Actually awd system of 3rd gen is much worse than 5th. 3rd is only reactive so you have no help from rear wheels until slippage occurs.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Thanks for the info.
The Old Dual Pump system seems to transfer enough torque to the rear axle (2 rear wheels with enough traction), and the reaction is fast but the traction control doesn't seem to transfer enough torque to the rear wheel with traction. Traction Control limitation or overall, not enough torque to the rear axle ?
I think that's combination of both.
Traction control on these models is not the fastest to react and yeah the torque is limited. I might be wrong, but i think i read some data saying it's up to 40%.
@@RTI_MD In 5th generation the system can send 57% more torque to the rear (what gives 40% of engine torque) than in 4th.
I was referring to 3rd gen, which the original comment was on too. Max 40% of the torque could be sent to the rear axle
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Yes, i also think that. There is an interesting thing ; the difference in behavior of the ESP. On Gen 3th and Gen 4th, the Traction Control seems to be at 100% dependant of the ESP, but on Gen 5th, no. The Traction Control funtion continues to work as it's an independant system (it's possible on some other cars ; mercedes ML w163 ETS + EPS, Land Rover ETC + DSC, etc.) .
The 2013 model has the hopes and prayers AWD system.
Q: Is there any drivetrain tuning that can be done to make the 4th gen better off-road?
The prices of that vehicle on my market are decent, the car has most things I need and there is a limited choice of reliable older SUVs on my market.
I will use it for hunting in the winter. I will obviously have good tires on but still, this video makes me worried. The car will be parked on the side of the road so this type AWD test will be done all the time ;)
