    Actually, with Jon-Erik Hexum, the gun was *not* loaded with a bullet, but with a standard blank. The force of the blank, when fired point-blank-metal-to-skin, still delivers enough force to be fatal. One of my first teenage TV-star crushes. The man was beautiful.

      The gun had a squib in the barrel. The squib was from a rubber round that got lodged in the barrel. When they fired the blank it launched the squib out of the barrel killing Jon-Erik Hexum. Rubber bullet stuck in barrel + blank = somewhat of an actual bullet

    “John Denver crashed due to a fuel tank valve mounted in a dumb location. He ran out of fuel and when he turned to activate the valve he pressed the controls forward putting the airplane in an uncontrolled dive with no power to regain altitude”. -my professional pilot husband

    • @ztoob8898
      @ztoob8898 Před 2 měsíci +12

      This non-professional pilot agrees with your husband. That Rutan airplane was poorly built, with a fuel-tank valve mounted behind the pilot's shoulder. It's natural to push with your opposite foot to turn around in your seat, which is exactly what my step-father did once in my airplane. He was in the right seat, and turned to his left to talk to my mom in the back seat. He pushed with his right leg to turn himself, which caused the plane's nose to yaw to the right. I had my feet on the rudder pedals and countered the force as best I could, but step-dad had his knee locked my then. I had to use left aileron to keep us from spinning in, which naturally had the cabin at a Dutch angle. As my mother yelled at me (thinking I was goofing around), I was pounding on step-dad's right thigh, telling him to for God's sake lift his right foot! He finally did, I neutralized the controls, and we completed the flight uneventfully.
      It amazed me how oblivious my step-dad was to what he was doing. I guess he was moving his head enough that he didn't notice the plane lurching around.
      It only takes a split-second of uncorrected rudder to send a plane into a wing-over stall. Recovery requires (among other things) pushing forward on the yoke when all your instincts are screaming at you to pull back and raise the nose. So even if there is ample altitude to recover, many fail to do so.

      I must've missed that part in the NTSB report. Maybe I scanned it too fast, but I know his mom sued the plane company and won, based on that faulty valve. From what I understand, his children received the money. Weird thing is, in the report it just said "...the pilot, an entertainer,...." I don't think they mentioned his actual name.

    Licensed or not, John Denver was quite an accomplished pilot. His father, who was a USAF test pilot, taught him to fly his Leer jet. The experimental plane he was flying had just been purchased, and he had two independent mechanics check it out. Problem was, the cockpit of the plane wasn't designed very well. While holding the stick with one hand, the pilot had to reach behind himself to switch the fuel tanks over so it was very awkward. A teacher who witnessed the whole thing (not knowing who the pilot was) said the engine started sputtering and smoking, and they suspect the carb had lost the proper air/fuel mix. The witness said the pilot deliberately flew over Monterey Bay 'cause he knew he was going to crash. It was a nice early evening on October 12 and a lot of kids were outside playing. John may've delayed too long to switch tanks, but at least he may've saved many lives by not crashing into someone's neighborhood. (Interestingly enough, earlier that day he'd gone golfing with Clint Eastwood and some others, told them he was going to go play 'with my new toy' that afternoon.) Sorry so long!

    John Denver died in an experimental, or homebuilt airplane. The airplane had 2 fuel tanks and a fuel selector that controlled which tank the engine was drawing from. You could only draw fuel from one tank at a time. He was running low on fuel while in the traffic pattern (right near the airport and coming in for landing) and reached behind him to flip the fuel selector. He couldnt reach it and stepped on the rudder pedals for leverage, which inadvertently rolled his airplane over and into the ground. This is what is widely believed to be the truth of what happened to him at least.
    Edit: He also had a pilot's certificate, but not a medical. His medical was revoked due to his history of driving under the influence.

      There's no excuse for Irwin being out there with no one informing him of potential dangers and how to handle them, or a trained medic, every location and animal he is filming. The network should have enforced this safety precaution. It's not a freak accident and just being dumb if a man who spends decades filming up close with potentially dangerous animals had absolutely no knowledge of the very basics of what to do if something happened. Only three people died from stingrays not because of freak accidents but human error. I am a medic and instructor and assure you, if he left the stinger in, even if he was far from help, he would be fine if he left it in until a trauma surgeon removes it and stops the bleeding. If he were idk an accountant on vacation, it might not be dumb, but Steve of all people should have known how to handle the situation or atleast had someone with him who does, given the obvious risks he takes and the length of his career

      @@backpackingtony1779 I find it so ironic that the studios went to such great lengths not to hire Lee or any other Asian man for the part but went with David Carradine who caused the show’s cancellation. I’m 62. My mom and I never missed an episode of Kung Fu. So when it got canceled, we could not understand why. Later I read that Carradine was getting $50,000 per episode which was a lot of money back then. He built a remote cabin back in the California desert somewhere and lived with his wife (second wife, I think) and child. He and his wife were back there doing all kinds of drugs. When it was time for him to report to the studio for his scenes, nobody could find him. He was wandering around on his desert property high as a kite. The productions crews were on a schedule and were still being paid for their time however. At first, the producers/directors would try to find Carradine. But after a while, they said he was costing them too much money paying production costs during such delays in trying to find him and waiting even more days for him to sober up. So they canceled the show.
      As to casting, as similar situation happened with the script for “The Bodyguard.” Back in the 1970s, the script was written for a black female superstar and her white bodyguard who fall in love. Diana Ross and Steve McQueen signed on to play the parts. But the studio believed that such a movie would not sit well with whites audiences, especially whites audiences in the South. So the project was shelved for decades until the script was revived and Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner agreed to sign for the roles. Very sad that so much calculating about what people will accept racially and what they won’t has to go into moviemaking and tv shows.

    John Denver died because he was unfamiliar with the plane he was flying (a Quickie 500). There are 2 different fuel tanks on the plane. The pilot has to manually switch the fuel intake between the 2 tanks to balance the plane. Normally the fuel valve is on the floor in front of the pilot's seat making access easy. In the case of the plane he was flying, the owner had switched the valve to behind the pilot's seat over the shoulder. When fuel ran out on one tank John needed to switch to the other tank, which had fuel in it, but he was unable to do so because of the unusual placement of the valve. We don't know whether he couldn't find the valve or he did find it but couldn't operate it.

They usually involved wealthy professionals who had the money for a high performance single plane but didn't have the time to remain proficient at flying the plane. They often perished while taking a cross country flight in bad weather and got in over their heads.

    John Denver died because his poorly designed experimental plane ran out of fuel. The poor design was putting the reserve fuel switch behind the pilot's head where it was difficult to find and reach. Brandon Lee was much more complicated than that. A prop bullet with no powder was in the gun but the primer was still active when the trigger was pulled the primer went off with enough force to push the bullet into the barrel, no one noticed, later a blank cartridge was fired at Brandon which then expelled the bullet killing him. At least that is the official story.

    You didn't complete the story about John Denver. The fact that he didn't have a valid pilot's license had nothing to do with his death. It was the design of the aircraft that caused it. He ran low on fuel while he was out over the ocean. Unfortunately the reserve fuel switch was in a location that he could not reach from where he sat, and the plane simply ran out of fuel. He crashed into the ocean and was killed.

    Brandon Lee was shot because they had a prop revolver used in close ups to show the bullets in the chambers, but no gunpowder or primer. When the armorer removed the fake bullets, one of the projectiles stuck in the chamber. When the gun was loaded with blanks the slug went unnoticed. The blank shot the bullet into Brandon Lee killing him.
