I have both setups the a9/GM combo and RX10m4. I find myself grabbing my RX10m4 when my family goes on vacation or events where I don't want to worry about my expensive gear. And the RX10m4 always impresses me. As you pointed out, you can't beat the a9/GM lens combo for professional gigs where you are selling your images. But some of my favorite photo's I've taken were taken on the RX10m4.
The main thing I am hoping they improve with the RX10m5, is to use the Z100 battery from the Alpha line and maybe a tad lighter.

Two and a half years later, and still the V isn't out. This is a really long delay. I just hate sinking $1700 into a 5-year-old model.
Really appreciate this comparison, though! Definitely not apples to apples, but it's very helpful to see what you get for $14K more, and to also hear your assessment of the RX10. If they come out with the V, I'll wait just long enough to make sure it's really an improvement, and then jump on it. If not, I'll get this old model after all. I'm a total amateur coming from an A580, which I absolutely despise--actually said I wasn't going with Sony again after that camera. But now, the RX10 IV has roped me in.

I have been shooting nature with the Sony A7R4 and a Sony 200 to 600 lens. The problem is it is just so heavy. I have missed many shots because I couldn't face taking it with me on a walk. I also had the indignity of Shutterstock rejecting a shot, which incidentally had been shortlisted in a competition, saying the camera equipment was sub standard. Anyway, I decided to sell a lens and buy the RX10 4. It is early days, but I have been blown away by this camera. Convenience, picture quality, flexibility, everything. I love it.

These sorts of comparisons provide a great deal of useful information...once they get going. I had to check at one stage if I had clicked on the wrong clip, because so much of it seemed to be promoting the air show. Once the comparisons got going though, they were quite informative. It was not difficult to tell the difference in image quality between the two systems and I think it is appropriate, given the price differential. However, as the reviewer repeatedly pointed out, the RX-10 allows you to get the shot you want, and the next, and the next, etc, all without needing to change cameras or lenses. The RX-10 does not do anything as outstandingly well as the priced-out-of-most-people's-reach setup, but it is more than competent at a broad range of uses. I disagree that the RX-10 is "light" though - I'm finding it significantly less wieldy than my Panasonic FZ-1000, and am looking at bringing along a monopod (actually 1 leg from my sensational Innorel RT75C tripod) to just get a little more stability when I need a slower shutter speed.

All good comments to an excellent comparison review. I’m just 70 and have some physical issues that limit mobility and, particularly, stamina. I could carry my Nikon FX and the Nikon pro lenses, but its a lot of weight - I think about hiring a Sherpa at times. Even the Nikon FX with the Nikon 24-70 is a ton of heavy. Add in the so-so Nikon 70-300 and I have a 24-300 range but … I am carrying all of that. If I know I am sitting still, I can bring the RRS tripod which is fantastic, but that’s also knowing what you are shooting. And when you are shooting. When I saw that the RX 10 IV was able to shoot in RAW, I was intrigued, since (like a lot of people) I do most of my post in Lightroom. That is, unlike many smaller cameras, you are not stuck with a compressed JPEG format only, and can ‘fix’ some parts of an otherwise well composed shot. For travel, the relative lightness and the crazy zoom reach and the RAW make this a winner. Unless you have a Sherpa and $30,000 to burn.

Great video. I'm one of the people that will never be able to afford 16,000 dollars of camera gear. I like bird and wildlife and landscape photography but it's just a hobby for me. Right now I have a small sensor super zoom. (Nikon B700) and I've been beating myself up trying to make up my mind when I upgrade (to around a $2000 limit) what would be the best thing to go for. Something like the RX 10? Or an entry or enthusiast level DSLR or mirrorless with a relatively inexpensive long or zoom lens? Been going back and forth quite a while now on this. The RX10 mk iv is a very appealing choice for me as I'm hesitant about getting into interchangeable lens cameras. As you inferred, it's an all in one package. This video gave me a lot of insight and information. Thanks very much!

As a two year RX10-IV owner, for me the bottom line for this comparison is this...
Quick reaction shots requiring 350-600mm focal length are almost always going to be noticeably superior on the Sony 400mm 2.8 G Master interchangeable lens setup.
Quick reaction shots requiring ANY OTHER FOCAL LENGTH are probably going to be better on the RX10-IV...because the interchangeable lens setup will likely MISS THE SHOT ENTIRELY.
When the eagle is grabbing the fish out of the lake, would you rather have a "B grade" shot from the RX10-IV or no shot at all because your interchangeable lens setup had the wrong lens attached?
The ability to go from 24mm to 600mm in under 3 seconds cannot be understated. This is why I always want my RX10-IV at my side regardless of what other photography equipment I have at my disposal.

    • @ThePixelShowYT
      @ThePixelShowYT  Před 2 lety

Nicely done comparison. I've been tempted by the RX10 Mk4 but I wish it had a fully articulated screen like many of the Panasonic cameras. I don't vlog but I find the fully articulated screen more useful and can be turned around so it's less likely to be scratched by other gear or tangle with my belt buckle. Maybe in the Mark V.

I have used Canon, Nikon, and Olympus over a 40 year career in stills photography. Since I went digital (around 2001), I went with Canon because of their glass. Once you have invested enough it's not easy to change. Now retired, I still have a huge inventory of Canon Gear, including 3 FF bodies, plus a couple of Nikon Df cameras (for the feel of the old film controls). However, for the times I want one camera only (when I am traveling with limited capacity for example) I use a bridge camera. I had used Canon SX40 to Sx60 units but was always frustrated by the tiny sensor. I tried the G3X with its 1" sensor and 24-600 lens, but was disappointed that there was no built-in EVF (essential to me for hand-held tele work).
I sold it and switched brands for the Sony RX-10M4 because of the excellent optics, sensor, processor and quality of build. Most of my images are output to digital media now and that is significant, as the quality required for that is much less (IMHO) than for large, hi-res prints. So far I have found the camera to be an amazing performer and there are only a few things I would change.
    1. Have a fully articulating screen - I have a chunk of metal where my knee should be and I prefer a fully adjustable screen when I can't bend down to get the angle I want.
    2. Have more customization of buttons and touch control, and that goes with 3...
    3. Really improve the menus - after using Canon's menu system Sony's is pretty awful.
That said, apart from the articulation, these are all firmware or software tweaks and could be done without rebuilding what is an excellent unit at heart. I hope they apply some of these to a Mk5...

It’s always nice to see this kind of comparsions. For my private stuff I went with the RX100VII as it is even smaller, but I thought very often about the RX10IV lately.
The thing is, that it feels like being from a different era. I think Sony should have gone for another body design, as this never matched any other Sony line. It’s just no fun to hold it. One could say it’s sexy as a fridge.
But what you can ger out of it, is simply amazing and thats still the case after so many years now. AF system have gotten way better, but the image quality is still like in 2017. It would be so nice to see another version of the RX10IV. Think about, that these 2017 generation models are the last ones of their kind we will see. This would be very sad. Panasonic was even as honest to say, that there will be no further development for this section. So lets hope for a maybe new and last generation for the RX10/100.

@@ThePixelShowYT I suspect that any possibility of an RX10 v is slightly hindered by the apparent departure of Zeiss from film camera lens design/manufacture. Would Sony put out a mark 5 with the same lens as the previous two marks however good that is? Would customers see a Sony lens-equipped Mark 5 as a downgrade (regardless of how goo it actually was)?
Personally, I'm more than happy to have bought a Mark 4 recently despite the age of the design because there isn't anything in the superzoom world that betters it for the kind of photography I do. As for the body design, I couldn't care less (I started with a 1950s Agfa Isolette 3 so anything after that is a step up)

For the average amateur, this sounds like a great camera, especially for travel, etc. I'd love to have it (unless RX10 V comes out in couple of months) but feel the greatest limitation of this becoming a semi-pro camera is the ability to manual zoom - much faster and more control - and no auto focus while zooming. As a pro this is essential for moving subjects such as sports, animals (dog's running at camera), and any action where you need to zoom out as subject gets closer to photographer. Manual zoom you could have shot the portrait in two seconds, not 15 or so. Otherwise, nice review. If RX10 V would add these two elements, I'd sell my other gear in a second.

I have an rxiv. It's great for what it is...but to say you cant really see the difference is a bit of a stretch. You do. What needs to be said..for some reason no one ever does is you cant focus and zoom at the same time.(it does work in video) It does not function like normal lens/camera combo. If you take photography just a bit "too serious" this limitation will be a disappointment. While focussing is fast....having to zoom and refocus every time makes it hard to use sometimes. To boot...the lens reacts really slow. The iso limitation will also be annoying to some. Iso 800 is really really pushing it. (400 to me is already too noisy) Yes ideally everyone wants to stay at 100 but in real world situations or out n about in nature where one cant control the elements or lighting..it's nearly not doable.

I'm now thinking perhaps this could mostly replace my a7III and array of glass. Granted I'd loose low light performance due to the image sensor but portability and reach with the 600mm would far outweigh the negatives. I just came back from a camping trip and brought a ton of gear only to use hardly any of it due to portability. I'd hate to sell it all but this RX10 looks amazing. Maybe I'll just dump a few lenses and keep the a7III for portrait work. Hmmm. Thanks for the review. If you happen to have a lower end 7 series camera I'd love to see a comparison?? I do not consider myself a pro-photographer. I have done few weddings and sold several photos of pets and sports. But the main thing I discovered many years ago is not necessary that your photography is the best in the world, but it is being able to market what you have. I owned a RX10-IV, sold it and bought the ar7iv with $K of GM lens. This is a great camera and the lens are amazing. But it becomes a job not only to carry your gear but changing the lens back and forth. Nevertheless, I sold my new ar7-iv and lens at a financial lost and ought another RX10-IV. This is the best camera for me. Even all the way to 600 mm it stays clear with very little noise. When compared with other brands of bridge cameras the Sony is heads and shoulders above them in quality. Some brands have more zoom but long before they reach their max they become so distorted the pictures are useless.

Obviously, it’s a limitation of sensor size and focal length reach with image quality across the frame. Larger sensors lose the range of wide angle to super telephoto and image quality across both the full focal length and also across the entire frame at those different wide range focal lengths. The RX10v4 is a 1” sensor because it does all of this very very good. Full frame interchangeable lens systems (good ones) do it great at more specific focal lengths engineered into those specific lenses, while delivering more light, with larger sensor gathering more light. 1” sensor is the trade off to get 24-600mm bliss in one camera, one lens , with pretty amazing results, with some compromises.

if you dont show the pictures close up/ zoom in , there is no way to tell anything about the image quality. Total waste of time

You need to change your background if you want to be taken seriously, unwatchable! Love my RX10 IV.

If Sony can put an APSC sensor in this RX10 body and keep it in the same price range, Sony will win the whole world

It doesn’t work that way. If Sony makes a bigger sensor for rx10, then the lens will have to be way bigger too. A 600mm f4 lense on an apsc sensor will be 2 feet long. The cost will also be 5x.

completely misleading. first, it is completely unfair comparison, there exist Sony FE 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 and FE 100-400 4.5-5.6, to say nothing about new Sigma 100-400 5-6.3 which will all give you a much better quality than RX10, also with some (albeit not as extensive) zoom capabilities, but without the exorbitant price of 400 mm GM. Actually, you can get Sigma 100-400 with Sony a6400 camera combo fpor about the same amount of money as RX10 m5. Then, it is not mentioned what difference the sensor size makes when the light is not perfect, and also that f4 on RX10 is actually equivalent to f11 on full-frame camera. Ths is just an advertisement for RX10 (which is an excellent camera, but has its limitations) and the airshow, no useful information there ))

Nothing is misleading.....and thank you captain obvious, there are actually other choices in lenses, but this CZcams was on these 2 setups. Everything else you state was either clearly covered by this video or something a caveman photographer already knows, like 1” sensor vs full frame sensor differences. The point of this video was clearly lost on you due to lack of basic comprehension.
