Slab city is awesome. Spent some time there in 2018 when I was training to fly paramotors next to the Salton Sea. So impressed by the ingenuity and creativity of the people there.

In a much, much, much, smaller way we once lived in an older camper in an old campground that was not rich. They allowed people to live there all summer long, but sadly not in the winter time. We stayed April to October. We went home to do laundry and check on things etc.
So my kids along with 2 other sets of my family had our own old campers that we set up in the back all together under the trees.
These slightly older guys, who were brothers, lived in the camper nearest our encampment. They would come to our shared campfire and visit with us and become like family.
They contributed in any way they could and we shared meals with them.
They managed to find places to live in the winter time.
We met lots of neat people. My brother had a wooden stage he built outside of his camper door where people could gather and do Karaoke, sing, dance and have fun.
We would go pick cherries and berries to make pies cooked over the fire.
Thunderstorms would come through and mess the place up but everyone helped each other pick up what was mostly tree debri like small limbs.
With donations the campground put on a fireworks display via my brother and family. He was great at timing the fire works. We family members spent the day helping him prepare and set up. Then all the campers and their visitors came to the small pond to watch him(and the family who was helping) do a great show that would last about an hour each time.
Sure there were issues sometimes. Like one of the neighboring campers going to the camp owners and saying wee were smoking lots of pot with our children around. So the camp manager came back and noticed that the pot smell was from us throwing fresh plant debri in the big fire pit. Since it was still green and fresh it smelled like pot. The manager apologized and walked off disgusted that the neighbors would make up that stuff. We kept burning the green sticks.
But we had lots of wild fruit growing everywhere, and herbs, and wild greens everywhere that helped us out.
Some visitors would drive around with shock on their faces. LOL. 😵💫🧐😳😯😱😖 😅😊
And others enjoyed it and wanted to stay there.
No one stole our outdoor stuff like bicycles etc.
There onlyy thing that we had to be weary of was the black walnuts falling from the trees and onto our campers or onto us. One hit a guy directly on top of the head and bounced off to roll some where else.
Too many good memories to list.
We were all heart broken when the owner's sold it. But that is how it goes sometimes. Some houses were built back there the last I heard.
