- Slab City is a squatter community in the Sonoran Desert and 'the last free place in America'. The inhabitants live off-the-grid in broken trailers or old school buses with no running water, electricity or sewage system. Their closest neighbours are the Marine Corps, who practice aerial bombing in the area.

If "freedom" meaning hobos and misfits running a trashy trailer park then yes, that is indeed pure freedom. Can also be found in any San Francisco suburb. Just follow the smell of that good, pure freedom.

A FANTASTICALLY well put together documentary and Rob as the kinda lead go to main character was a fantastic idea. I also love how you focused quite heavily on the bond between human and pet as another type of family. It shows how the bond with a best friend (pet) can humanize everyone. Well done.
You know it's a great video when it's over too soon. Love it for sure.
This is an old documentary. Half the people in this have died, left the place or are in jail.

Great idea but how do you know they have money? How do you know they like to shower once a day? Most of them doesn't even have enough money for cigarettes.
Using meth is very unsustainable. I also will never know why someone would want to be up all night just staring at the wall or the sky. Great documentary and great people from what it looks like.

This was the first doc that introduced me to slab city. So much has changed there, people wise, over the years but it’s still a mysterious/odd/scary/dangerous/ecclectic/dark/neat nook of the world
Looks like a tough but laid back way of living. I can't tell you how happy I was to see that school bus at the end of the video. Those young minds need as good an education as possible.
I was horrified. That this crowd of moronic, druggie, alcoholic, professional unemployed weirdos are responsible for "raising" kids. The kids, being the poorest, dirtiest & most ignorant kids in school, will be the most bullied. It is criminal.
Edit: You're right. If there are kids out there, thank God they get out of there part of the time, get a decent meal or 2 and have a chance to learn something that can help them in life. If they choose to make any effort at all. Having parents like this won't make it easy on them.

No doubt there are some very decent good hearted people who have found a place that just makes them feel normal..and safe. My only concern, and it’s not remotely my business…and definitely not said as a criticism…but it just seems with this much constant smoking, drinking, extreme heat, neglected dental care, and questionable water quality, that many of these people have also Given Up and just don’t care…or at least don’t worry much about dying or getting critically ill. And maybe that’s the point…they live completely in the moment. There is something to be said for that. Slab City looks/seems way too apocalyptic for me, but I guess that helps keep the population down! In some ways I admire their courage to just reject the norm. And their love for all the dogs in the community is heartwarming and boy do I Get It. This documentary was very well done, and important. Thanks!

@JRoll bathe in bug repellent and eat raw uncooked garlic. 3 cloves a day. It will come out through your sweat and bugs don't like it. When I was in Arkansas 1 summer I used it and the chiggers pretty much left me alone

This place has been romanticised but the reality is that it’s been overrun by addicts with some non addicts with no place to go.
It's frightening to think that I could end up living in a place like this if I made a lot of bad decisions. Oddly that's one of the reasons I like to watch videos about Slab City.

Honestly its less about making bad decisions but more about being poor and failed by our capitalistic system. Slab City can be pretty fuckin harsh, but for some of us it's the best we can do.

Hey! Yea slab city is a pretty interesting and unique place. I like to stay its the good, ugly, and very ugly, but always pretty darn awesome also! Too bad you didnt stop my our place Flamingo Camp! It's just before East Jesus, if you looked left and saw a big pink flamingo head, thats us!

I would think this would beat living in a tent in downtown LA. But my one worry would be what do you do if you have a major health issue, especially if you are older? Get someone to take you into the city and go to Urgent Care? Or just maybe die out there? Seems like a tough way to live but you do what you have to do to get by.
A place like this is only good for the healthy individual that wants to drop out of society.
I am 53. Don't trust doctors much but use them on occasion. Never had covid nor tested for it. I would love to be able to do that but you got to have a little bit if money. Gotta do some kind of job wouldn't you think. I think of that movie "into the wild" whenever I see slab city. There's a video of slab city on Vice channel that's pretty good too
They aren't as isolated as films like these portray. They are pretty close to the city. Yea, a true emergency like bleeding out you are pretty well screwed but it's not that difficult to make it to the city, people just choose not to.
(Also not defending the way of life. I think these people are idiots in my humble opinion)

NO ONE can tell you what to do at Slab City. My mental health's been awful for a long time and I strongly believe Slab City's the PERFECT place to go to in order to never feel stressed again

First off I wanna say good job on the presentation, it was great. The people were cool and the more civilized ones I've seen in the slabs. At 37:20 I noticed You played the same song as earlier in the video. For Me personally, didnt think it fit the video. Was a little too drawn out and kind of annoying , not really a great piece of music in my opinion. Maybe for like 10 seconds or something for a theatrical transition in the video, but not for several minutes multiple times. Just tryna give some positive criticism for Your next documentary. Peace
