    ZACK! Please for the love of GOD don't make us wait another year! Your videos are great, you are a very likeable guy. Please keep the videos going! Keep the pop up original, perhaps a stretchy tarp (think like a shower cap) to protect the roof on rainy days. On nice days show off that shellac roof! Be well!!

    I would use plywood - but encapsulate it with epoxy and fiberglass cloth. Great to see you back!

    Glad to see you making another video. This is so cool! I can't wait to see what else you do to it. I would love to see you do it as close to original as possible but it is okay to take license with it.

    What a neat project. Funny how it almost looks homemade in todays standards. Seems like the plywood and the canvas would be relatively easy to repair. Once you went inside I was surprised to see the condition of some of those wood roof pieces. No plastic parts found on this camper. Glad to see another video

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  Před 11 měsíci +1

      It really does look home made in some places lol I'll be interested to find another one somewhere and do some comparing. I also was quite surprised at the inside condition of the roof and rafters that support it. although the center "ridge beam" has quite the sway back to it and the rafters are somewhat misshapen. might have to do some steam bending, or maybe un-bending. Thanks for watching, and thanks for sticking around, you'll always be #86 to me :-)

    Welcome back! That is so cool! I can't wait to watch the progress. If it was me I would try to use as much original material as possible but I would put a layer of fiberglass over the plywood roof just for added water protection.

    This Pop-Up is amazing. I think you should do your best to keep it original. But with that said, I think you should also upgrade in some areas. As you mentioned, this was never made to travel at 75 mph. Personally, I would photograph every inch of it and number every par. Then completely disassemble it and make patterns from each and every pice. Once thats done, i would be able to create one from modern materials while still having the original. If your good at making plans you could sell them online. If not I'm sure you could find someone who can. You could reproduce and sell them. A timeless design like this never goes out of style.
    But regardless the path you take, I wish you great luck and success. I look forward to watching your progress. Much respect 🙏 🫡.

      Thanks, George. That’s the same thing my wife suggested, about making a pattern in order to re-create. Good idea

      @ZackOfAllTrades it's such a beautiful and unique camper. It would be a crazy amount of work, but my guess is it will be not only gratifying to keep this design alive, but it could also be a new review stream for you. Make the parts have someone make some instructions and sell it as a kit. I know I would buy one. What state are you in? I'm a Retired Marine with nothing but time. If I'm close to you, I would be more than happy to offer you my free labor.

    Man I swear I could smell the inside of that canvas trailer when you first went inside 😆. Good to see ya back! I miss seeing what your passion and talents can do. Somehow you got me interested in a trailer I’d quickly deem worthless.
    As for restoration… I wouldn’t worry too much about keeping it original. There’s nothing else out there like it so, there really is no strict definition of “original” for it. No one would know the difference.

    Super cool project! Looking forward to seeing the progress. As for materials, if you can find modern materials that still retain the period correct look, I’d say go for it. Bottom line here (at least in my opinion) is that you want to retain as much originality as you can while also making it as usable and enjoyable for your family as possible.

  • @C40navyaircrewman
    @C40navyaircrewman Před 10 měsíci

    Good to see you’re still at it Zack! I think there is nothing wrong with using some more modern materials that will withstand the elements better than what they had back then. I think if you can use some new stuff while still keeping the original charm you’re honoring the spirit for what it was designed and will definitely get some good use out of it. Campers should be used, not looked at. RestoMod it brother!

    I wonder if Henry Ford had one as he liked camping. One might try to find some pics of him camping. To me I would completely restore it and improve it wherever I could. You still have what you have. Use the canvas as a pattern. This is a very sweet find.
    Are you still flying? I had to quit six years ago.
    Cheers, Lee

      The Henry Ford Museum does have a camping display I think with the camper or one like he used. Zach should contact the museum they probably have information on this manufacturer.

    For the restoration, make it live. Do whatever you thing is best. I would not over restore it, but maybe improve it with modern materials. I would keep it old looking. It tells a story

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  Před 11 měsíci

    Good video. We are in the process of buying a possible 1929 Zagelmeyer. It is a full restoration and Im unsure of how correct it is. But is definatly different than yours. I have found your style camper advertised as late as 1928. The wife and I have a youtube channel called Model T Camp and Adventures. We camp with our 1927 Model T and period correct camp gear. We also do day trips and set up a display of vintage camping at various rendezvous and expos. We are very interested in folowing your progress with this project. We have subscribed and look foward to part 2.

    I would say, keep the appearance and methods as close to original as possible, but substitute modern materials where they improve longevity. Like, using a modern synthetic canvas like Sunbrella, but keep the stitching and style as original as possible. It looks like the roof may have been covered with a stretched, painted canvas like some boat decks used to be. Epoxy coating the new plywood (marine grade ply if possible) should extend its life and could be hidden under new canvas or whatever was originally on the roof.

      @ZackOfAllTrades  Před 11 měsíci

      That’s a great point! I hadn’t even considered painted canvas but now that you mention it, there are some places where the impression of the weave is left in the paint/finish that remains. Great thought

      @@ZackOfAllTrades I've done something similar with a mouse boat. It worked - for a while. I posted a video on it a while ago - but the plywood I used generally turned to dust in about 15 or 20 years

    I'm going back to Michigan over Thanksgiving. If you can verify that there is one at Greenfield Village, I could go there and take a bunch of pictures. It's not far from my family's house. When's part 2... in 6 months? :)

    Man, if you got the paperwork for that, IE ownership, then wow!! Fix it as best you can. The more you do to upgrade and preserve it the better! What a score, I wonder if it was a European who made the orginal design because of the size and easy to tow. If it is, it would make sense as the roads are small there! Looking forward to video #2.

    if you're going to use it then i'd say functionality over form for the restoration. if it's just gonna sit around and be shown off and essentially be a museum piece then you should probably keep it as close to original as possible. heck, if even get your hands on some good original reference material you might even be able to make it MORE original. edit: oh and thanks for that sausage recipe LOL i found it a year or two ago and still use it.
