    It's a shame that people let cars sit / deteriorate without looking after it a bit. Nice to see that this classic may make it back on the road thanks to you!

    That's great, always good seeing 'proper' old engines with simpler designs.
    I'm currently working on restoring a Volvo 480 2.0litre (non turbo) from 1994 and a lot of the mechanical side is the same as you showed, again with an old Bosch ECU inside too and simple sensors/feedback.
    I'm documenting the restoration I'm doing (I'm in no way an expert!) on my youtube channel.

    With my 1984 Porsche 944 automatic I recently moved the car to a new spot and it died on me. I have lights, fans, AC, and sunroof but no power to the starter when turning the key. Ive replaced the starter, fuel pump, ignition switch, all fuses, tested dme relay (and maybe fried the dme on accident by crossing some wires in the box), and got the car to turn over by bypassing the starter solenoid. I have tach bounce and all gauges, but no power to the starter. Even the main grounds have been cleaned.

    Here's a fun fact... I actually repaired and prepared a Porsche for "the" episode of top gear with Clarkson,may and hammond. Did their budget Porsche challenge on top gear. Just watching your video... does that car really warrant getting running? No malice intended. But just watching the video and the obvious faults like rusted servo ect would write this car off . But unless it's a customers pride and joy of course. Brilliant video all the same. Thank you

      Good for u, is the video of u working on it on CZcams? My mate at the garage just asked if I could get it going so it's up to them! Cheers my friend, Sandy

      @@sandyande it was around 12 year ago. Where they bought budget Porsche's for under 1500 quid. Their production team contacted us. As we had the car for sale. And they asked if we'd give it to them. We declined. But said if they gave us 8 tickets to the actual audience show on tv. We would gift it them. Their only requisite was it had a 12 month not and a cambelt change. So that's what we did. I never ended up going. But still saw the car that made it to the show. 6 out of 8 tickets got used. At the time there was a 3 year waiting list for free tickets fr the audience. But giving them a car. Got us in. Here's another fun fact. Goto applause store dot com. For free tv show tickets. 😉

      And should you wish... as I'm a daily. Ever require my contact details. For even just bouncing ideas off with a fellow mechanic. Give me a shout I'll give you my business details. Always good to be able to talk through "that" problem job. And to answer your original question. Never filmed it. As to me it was just a test and cambelt swap. Thats all I saw it as. Because I never thought about filming a daily job. As I never thought it would get on top gear. Lol

    Ignition switch Battery and starter is where I would start with a no crank. Those sensors won’t have anything to do with cranking just starting. Then throw a fuel pump and filter in it. If it starts great but if not see if it fires or just cranks. Then try starting fluid. If it runs on starting fluid then look into the injectors/ fuel lines/ oil pressure sending unit/ speed and reference sensors. Jump the fuel pump and try starting and that will narrow down the search quite a bit. Could be just the relay. If the car builds fuel pressure but still doesn’t start then you need to change the DME control unit.
    Fresh plugs wires a cap and rotor wouldn’t hurt either.

    Hey I’m having a no start issue as well on my 1978 924, I’ve replaced the faulty ignition coil (resistance measurements were off spec) however still no start, but I’ve noticed there’s 2 ballast resistors before the coil wich take the voltage down, I’ve measured them and the 1st one takes the voltage down from 12v to 8v and the 2nd one takes it down from that 8v to like 5.4V. This seems strange to me, as people say the coil needs 12v, do you think I should remove those resistors?

    I have an early 944 with similar problems. The car was having a hard time starting and always had to be jumped. I tossed in a new battery and it cranked but wouldn't start. One day, no crank. I replaced starter and with a new battery, still no crank, I only hear the solenoid click. I don't think it is starter or battery. I cleaned my DME unit and it looks okay. I haven't check Alt., haven't touched the Ref Sensor, I'm thinking it could be ignition switch but I'm not sure. What part did it end up being? I'm glad someone posted a video of this problem within this year. Look forward to hearing back, thanks.

      The problem was wiring at the ignition switch, your problem sounds like the main wire that is between battery and starter motor is high resistance/open circuit or you a bad engine earth. Take a jump lead a go between engine block and battery negative and try and crank! If that doesn't work try a jump lead between starter motor(if u can get access) heavy duty positive and battery positive and crank from the key

    My 1986 944 is doing something like this. I have power the interior lights etc come on. I put the Key in the Ignition and nothing not a sound just a small Noise like it wants to get power to the ignition. I am suspicious that it's my Starter. I noticed just a few days ago before this happened it was slow to crank and was getting worse. I did check my battery and it is good. The Ignition Relay on referral G14 was just replaced the Starter looks as old as the car itself. I just purchased the car from a Guy from California and he hadn't had it long and didn't know much about the history. The guy before him did some stupid stuff to it that I am going to Undo. The car is a Gem and is now in the right hands for restoration.

      Having a similar issue now. Did you ever get this sorted out? Going crazy trying to tack down the solution. Replaced starter, battery, and ignition coil, still just getting a single click.

  • @danielramirez8471
    @danielramirez8471 Před 4 lety

    I would start by removing the starter, I had the same issue and found some debris preventing the car from cranking
