This is my first ever attempt at making an edited video for CZcams! I've played Don't Starve off and on for several years, but recently got a couple of friends and family members to give it a try. To help them out I decided to make this video, and I had so much fun making it I've decided to start a full guide series. Who knows where this will take me!
Future guides in the series will cover base building, preparing for and surviving the other seasons, exploring the caves and ancient ruins, adventure mode, and more! Not to mention the other expansions like Shipwrecked and Hamlet, and even Don't Starve Together. This video is focused on the PC 2020 version of Don't Starve, but should generally be applicable to console versions (switch, playstation, xbox) as well as mobile (android and iphone).
So stick around, like and subscribe, and all that good stuff, and if there are other topics or even other games you might like me to cover, let me know in the comments.

"doest this sound like you?"
no I'm usually dead before then
Hahah - fair enough! Now go watch the rest of the series and let's see if we can't get you through Winter and beyond! 😉
Yep me too
I'm supposed to make it to winter to be considered a newbie? Oh dear....
Stick around a while - we'll get you there! 👍
i’ve said it and i’ll say it again - don’t starve is a really hard game

Yea, oh *deer*
Dude this is the best beginner's guide on Don't Starve ive found on youtube. Super relevant to someone just starting vanilla!
Thanks - super glad you found it helpful! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about anything, or if there is anything I can help out with!
I agree. Best beginners guide video
Especially since it is your first video.
@@salendrak absolutely rock solid! Thanks.
Yea!! I’ve never found anything like this before!!
i'm glad there finally is a don't starve guide that is not about the together version and is pointing tips and tricks instead of being way to specific on a playstyle without even explaining why.
“You almost make it through it through your first winter”
You overestimate my power
😆
Well, let's fix that!!
You’ll be happy to hear that after watching your videos and learning on my own I made it to my first winter and an all time high of 21 days... only to die to the dark after hunting a winter koalaphant
@@yeetuslefetus1443 Progress - I love it!! Next time let's get you slaying a Deerclops and getting to spring!
"Does this sound like you?"
No, because ive never even made it to winter.
Life goals!!
Haha same dude
I make it to day 7 or 8 and then I die. Hopefully I’ll get a little farther with this guide. It seems that trapping small animals your first few days and finding gold on day 7 isn’t the strat.
Side note: I tried to burn down a spider nest and ended up burning down half a forest. I found out about charcoal that way. Pretty silly discovery if you ask me.
@@redking36 Hey, however you learn, consider it a lesson learned!! Good news about forest fires is it will only spread a limited distance from your location. Beyond that the forest will be fine. And charcoal is QUITE useful! As for finding gold, I'm sad if I don't find any by day 2 or 3, and usually find at least some the first day. It's a top priority in a new world!
@@salendrak
I’ve started a new world. I’m around day 20 and still going strong. I got gold day 2 and stocked up a stack of almost every important material and it really helped. The tips about sanity and plant-based food really helped too (I assumed meat filled more but it seems equal to some plants). I found some rare things like butter, a a treeguard, and a meat plant (lureplant I think).
The only problem is it’s too peaceful. I’ve only found one spider nest so far. I have a sinkhole to delve into but it has proven dangerous. Any tips about exploring sinkholes?
Dude honestly cant believe this is your first ever video man! Great job and thanks it helped alot!
Awwww thanks for the comment - much appreciated! I probably sunk way more time into making it and learning how to do various effects, but hey - it was fun! And glad it helped!
Bruh, first video eh? This is A. extremely helpful, B. very well made without talking about useless stuff, C. funny af with those great references! You did a good job sir!
Thanks - I appreciate that! And glad you got the references LOL - I imagine many viewers have no idea what that's from 😜
“Sanity isn’t usually a huge problem on the first week.”
me with 19 terrorbeaks on day 5: ok
Lemme guess - you like eating mushrooms and monster meat? 😆
Prob due to the sanity aura of monsters and dusk
@@iisyntry13337 Yes. And the worm holes do not help.
Just getting started on the game, this is by far the easiest to follow and most clear-cut informative videos out there for a starter. You keep it simple, you show gameplay footage that is relevant, and you don't waste time going on tangents. Definitely a thumbs-up from me. I find that this guide really helps, so thank you. The simple editing that shows stuff such as BIOME LINES and DANGER AREA really add a lot to the flavor of the gameplay shown without being distracting, and your advice remains easy to follow for even a nose-picking flower-burning nibwitted noob such as myself, hahah!
Hahaha - thanks! How you enjoy the rest of the series too! 😁
Me, who’s been a veteran of this game for years: “ah yes finally I can get good”
Oh, there's still plenty of things in this game that I can still get better at!
This is your first video?! Man you are a natural! Loved the video, helped me remember how to play after taking a 2 year break from the game. Quarantine boredom making me play again haha
Glad I could help! And yeah, this game is about perfect for quarantine!
I just started playing Don't Starve again after a veeery long hiatus and I kept looking for videos with good tips and tricks and this was the best one I found! As some comments mentioned below, almost all videos are about Don't Starve Together so it's great to have found this one. It's a great video and very informative! It's awesome it's your first ever video and I never would've noticed.
Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate it!
I'm not sure why so much of the content on CZcams is focused on DST. Don't get me wrong, it's also a great game and a lot of fun, but it does surprise me how little new content is getting made for the single player versions. My guess is just that there are less frequent updates as compared to DST. Oh well!
You have no idea how many times I’ve come back to these videos they’re the best on CZcams. You should do a series for shipwrecked and hamlet too that’d help a lot
Shipwrecked and Hamlet have been on my to-do list for years now. Perhaps someday I'll get to them LOL
Bold of you to assume I’ll make it to winter
What can I say - I'm an optimist!!
You must have the "Don't Starve Beginners Guide" market cornered. Yours is the only guide I could find, everyone else is doing "dont starve together" content. Good Job!
Oh no - you've discovered my master plan!! lol - yeah, I've always been partial to single player, but even back when I learned the game, there just weren't any good guides for it. So here I am!
I've always been scared of clockwork enemies, even with a log suit and spear, and then I just see you stage dive two bishops like it's nothing. My courage has definitely increased!
Yeah, so long as you have at least a lot suit and/or football helmet or better, they're not too bad. Yes, you'll take a couple of hits to the face, but that really is the best way to take them out!
this is hands down one of the best guides ive ever seen on yt
Wowzers!! Thanks!!!
I dont understand why when I search for beginner's guide videos for DST/DS your channel does not come in the top. This video is much more palatable for noobs like me who never played DS games. Your channel is very under-rated. This is quality content and much better than other big brothers like Beard777 although his humour is appreciated.
My guess is that it is because I'm a newer channel making content for an older game that already has several established channels. I'm also not able to pump out videos very frequently due to RL (kids mostly) and the amount of time I put into each video. All that editing and custom graphic making takes time!!
Thank you so much for the high praise though - much appreciated!!
@@salendrak quality pays off over time
its awesome that this guy is still responding to comments
Well, what else am I going to do sitting in line to pick my kids up from school?🤷♂️

@@salendrak Wait u have children. Good on you

@@salendrak Your a good CZcamsr for being a father as well
I absolutely love how you merged the game's style into everything you were saying. It is all unified so well. Even the way you speak and words you chose match with the game's ambient. I'd just suggest people to do absolutely collect mushrooms since they are great crock pot filler, and can be given to pigs, stack to 40 and are renewable resource.
Yeah, if I'm being honest, I probably don't utilize mushrooms as much as I probably should. Although I generally grab blue and green caps whenever I see them.
This is BY FAR the BEST guide for DS and DST. Even three years later it's still helpful. Thank you
Thanks!! 😁
This was your first ever video? Wow man, great quality, no nonsense and straight to the point. I was looking for a good Don’t Starve guide and I think I just found it.
Yup - first video ever! Took forever to make since I was learning how to do all the editing and whatnot, and was probably WAY too detail oriented, but it was definitely a learning experience!!
@@salendrak nah man, I really think everything you talked about in this series it's what a person really need to know before playing the game, because it's sooo hard from my point of view. A person who achieved Masters in Apex Legends 🙃😂
Who disliked this video? It's really good, not bias guide that explains the basic with out pushing to play one playstyle or the other one.
Also nice info on cooked/raw food spoilage that not many players know, even among veterans know that cooked meat/fish spoils slower than raw and opposite for vegetables.
Thanks for the comment - I really appreciate it! One of my major goals with the video was to cover enough of the basics to help a new player out, while not trying to steer them too much in any particular direction. In my view, the game is all about having fun and enjoying it, however you best like to do so, without worrying too much about things like optimal decisions and whatnot. Cheers!
Pro tip: wait for butterflies to go into their dance animation, and you can just walk up and kill them. Butterflies and petals have literally saved me so many times when I'm on the verge of death, love them.
They are surprisingly good!
I have been playing don’t starve for two years. I decided to look up how to play as I still have not gotten very far. Because of this video, I now know that there is a map. A MAP. I’ve been playing this game for two years without a map. I hate myself
Reasons I always check the keybinds when playing a new game - there's all sorts of things you can learn in there!
Also, now I really want to try a no-map run. Sounds challenging!!
Can't believe it's your first video, looking and sounding really good! Thank you this helps a lot
Thanks - glad you liked it! I do get a better mic after the 3rd video, and personally think things sound even better after that!
Bro, this game is insanely difficult for beginners. Lol. I've had this game for years and I always feel like I barely know what I should be doing xD
No doubt about it - the game has a really steep learning curve! But a little knowledge, practice, and experience go a long way, and once you get past the curve it's really not hard at all!
I have to agree with haha2339... easily the best starter guide that I've seen for this game. Keep up the great work. Btw, love the Holy Grail reference
Thanks! I wonder how many of the younger viewers don't get the reference :P
Excellent video man! Most informative guide I've encountered as a beginner and the production quality is fantastic! Please continue the series and channel I'm positive it will take off ;)
Thanks! And never fear - the show WILL go on!!
I once completed terraria pre hardmode because of you and here you are helping me for dont starve u are truly underrated
Awesome! I love it when viewers benefit from my vids for more than one game!!
This is fantastic, perhaps the best "beginners guide" I've ever seen
Wow - thanks!!
I’ve just started playing and every “guide” I saw didn’t really help me that much, but this one is so much better. Thanks a lot, just subscribed and about to watch the others.
Awesome - thanks! More will be on the way soon!

Check the second video in the series for base building! As webber it's a good idea to base near or transplant spider dens nearby, but other than that his base is basically the same as every other character.
And I'm actually working on another Don't Starve guide right now that will thoroughly cover food! Hopefully will be ready sometime next week!
a 2 year old video and yet so helpful. ty for this piece of gold
That's the nice thing about having made a guide for a game that is pretty old and doesn't get updates any more - the guide itself shouldn't become obsolete anytime soon! 😆
@@salendrak i think the dlc refipe for the alchemy engine is wrong
@@cr_lucky7906 yup - that was an error on my part, but can't fix it now!
Thank you so much for this whole guide. Finally survived a whole year. Watched the whole playlist in one go.
Nice!!
Your first youtube video? I would have never thought. It's perfectly executed.
Yup - very first one!! And thanks!!
I just want to say this is *exceptional*. The fact you were able to just pick up and do this right at the beginning of your channel is really impressive, and I'm excited to see what improvements/optimizations you find as time goes on. It will only get better! Thanks so much for these videos and those that are yet to come!
Thanks - it's really nice to get great positive feedback like this!
For a first attempt at a CZcams video, you did an amazing job and seasoned CZcamsrs should learn from you!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for this amazing guide! Following the guide I survived in my main world as Wigfrid 340 days, cleared out all three ruins, tamed a beefalo, downed every seasonal giant and beat the adventure mode. Now I will seal and preserve this world and try some other character!
That's totally awesome!! And much appreciation for the super thanks!! 😁
No way this is your first video. This is very professional and well done. Kept me engaged. You must be a natural. I'd give several thumbs up but we can only give one 😊. Well done.
Scouts honor - first video! Took a TON of time to make though as I was learning to use the software as well, and watched a LOT of tutorial videos just on that! I do like to think I've gotten quite a bit better since then, and the time it takes to make videos has definitely gone down substantially!
LOL - your comment reminds me of how my kids rate a particularly tasty dinner. They give it two thumbs, two toes, and a tongue up - which always looks pretty hilarious 🤣
As a Terraria veteran I came here to say thank you on behalf of all the anonymous views your tutorial series is about to acquire.
I definitely have noticed that the views on my Don't Starve guide has gone up!
I can already tell that these videos are going to be a huge help. My friends and I have been playing DST but we just haven't been able to get past the middle of our first winter, but it seems like we weren't exactly setting ourselves up for success. Great video, so excited to see more.
Yeah, you'll quickly learn that almost all challenges in these games can be solved simply by being properly prepared. Hope you and your friends continue to have tons of fun!!
I’m gonna watch this guide all the way through and maybe sometime we’ll be able to last more than one day in spring :)
Structure was brilliant. Thank you. Also love the timestamps for future visits for specific info. Does not feel like a first video.
Thanks! I would guess that the time I spent making this was easily 5 to 10 times more than most people's first videos LOL, but am happy to say that my production time has decreased substantially since then!
@@salendrak it's impressive to say the least man lol I'm just starting this game. I have the switch version so I'm going to toy with that for a while before I get onto don't starve together with my brother and them.
Tried this game months ago and couldn’t get into, but decided to have another run. I nearly died to hounds, then made myself armour and weapons and was super careful to try and not get attacked again. Killed myself eating a red mushroom. I love this game.
That's the spirit!!
I don't understand HOW you don't have more subs. Your content is so AMAZING and This series is so helpful for me.
D'awwww - thanks! Hopefully it's just because I'm a newer channel with a small amount of videos. Time will tell!!
Wow, this was your CZcams debut? Fantastic!
Yup! Spent a TON of time making it too LOL
You're making hands down the most accessible and easy to understand guides out there. It's amazing how well structured and comprehensive your videos are. The amount of work you put into these guides doesn't go unnoticed, it's quite obvious that you're trying to make high quality content and I can only appreciate that. It's a shame that you have so few subscribers, you deserve better. Btw I really hope that you keep on making this series, since your last upload was like 2 months ago.
Thanks for the comment! I do hope to continue the Don't Starve series at some point. The pandemic really reduced the amount of time I had for projects like this due to having kids home all the time, but school is done now and I'm starting things up again. I'm actually going to be starting a Terraria beginners guide series, which just had a major and final content update!
Everytime I die in the game, I come back to this video to relieve myself. Hoenstly, great video for beginners 👍
Thanks!!
Just came from an amazingly condescending demonstration video to this.
Unlike him, You sir, three minutes in, have my like and sub.
Well that's the sort of comment that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside - Thanks!! 😊
@@salendrak glad to return your help in such a way, sir. Have a great day. I shall be putting these instructions to immediate use.
My biggest tip is to build Bee Hives, You can use them to heal with the honey bandages, for food with the Honey ham, and for defense with the Bee mines. Bee Hives are the best! :D
Yup - honey is an amazing food, and a few boxes can easily keep you well fed year-round!
This is the best how to start guide I've found, and I've been looking all day.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series 😊
Maybe the best first video I‘ve ever seen! Super structured and informative with helpful and pretty animation, great cut. Nice voice, speaking tempo and diction (especially for second-language speaker). And on top very entertaining! Now I‘m giving your Tipps a try and hopefully make ist though the first winter.
I‘m excited about your other Videos to this topic.
Wow, thanks! I probably spent a lot more time on this video than most people spend on their first - and it turns out that was a good thing - It's my top performer!!
Thank you for this. I've clocked over 200 hours into this game, and have a save for 768 days, but haven't played in like 5 years, and can't seem to make it past day 50 anymore. I looked up this guide just now after I died to freaking killer bees in spring time.
Those killer bees can be deadly! I even died to bees recently in a livestream. Darned snipers!!

This game is so complex, it's just unbelievable. You have to be always thinking and to be aware basically of anything. Also, thanks for the guide, my man!
Yeah, there really are a lot of little things you have to be aware of. When in doubt, it will probably try to kill you! 🤣
Best guide ever, just started playing this game and this video helps tremendously compare to others, and it is really fun and joyful to watch!!
Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! I remember when I first started playing Don't Starve MANY years ago, and there were really no good getting started guides, which is a big reason why I decided to make these. More to come!!
I watched some ds guides in the last days but this seems absolutely the most complete and clear I've seen
Thanks! Way back in the day when I first started playing Don't Starve there really weren't any good beginner's guides, and I'm surprised how even since then there hadn't been many good entries on this topic. Hence me making this video - and I've been really surprised at how well it's done!
Great video! I'm getting back into the game for the first time since years and years ago when it launched on ps4. I've been looking for a decent guide to get me reacquainted and looks like I found it!
Your video is very high quality. Nice script/voice, simple yet informative without being boring or overwhelming, well structured with included time stamps, no irritating forced hype or clickbait elements. Easily a 10/10.
Thanks!!
I have never been able to survive more than 2 weeks before this guide. I'm now at week 18 preparing for winter. You are truly underrated.
Nice work!!
Really great video, very helpful to a returning player - many other beginner guides are super complicated, but this is great, with simple points reinforced throughout. Thanks!
Awesome - glad it helped! Since this is an older title I had a feeling that both new players as well as returning players might be in need of a good guide, the likes of which weren't around back when I first started playing!
I have over 1700 hours in don't starve and discovered many of the farms / exploits for ps4. Yet here I am watching your whole series! Fantastic series and your scripts / video editing are top notch!

P.S. THANK YOU for addressing your mod list right up front and with details about each mod. This is something that for some reason almost nobody does, and when you ask what mods someone is running you either wait several months for a list of barely useful words grouped together in a borderline incomprehensible manor, or you get no response at all.
Yeah, I've totally noticed that in other videos too. I just wanted to make it clear from the get-go what exactly I was using so people wouldn't be confused as to why I had stuff on my screen that they didn't on theirs!
Incredible tutorial from a very experienced don’t starve player this is such a great way to teach and huge kudos to still replying to comments over 2 years!

Absolutely mindblowing that this was indeed your first video. Happy for you that it did so well, especially over time
Thanks!! I put a ton of time into making this video, and it took a good while for it to start getting views and whatnot. But I'm definitely unusual on CZcams that my first video ever published is, to this day, my 2nd most watched video ever published. And the most viewed is my 4th video (1st one for Terraria). Pretty cool, if I do say so myself! 😁
10 years after this game was released i finaly played it. Amazing guides here. Thanks!
Welcome to the Constant! This is definitely a game that ages well!
Wow, I was shocked to hear this was your first video, I thought I was listening to a seasoned youtubber, great stuff, Subscribed, you are a natural at this!

Just wow, how doesn’t this have way more views! A terrific tutorial/video mate! Clearly lots of effort put into it. Definitely learnt a bunch of things, I’m about to watch the other parts as well, thanks man!

Yours is the FIRST video I’ve seen that focuses on beginner play for DS SOLO and THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Yeah, for some reason everyone is always more focused on DST. Because updates or something or other LOL
Just got the game recently and died by the seventh day on my first run. After watching your video, I made it to a full month on my second run!
