Every time I play DST with my friends, I say, “okay, let’s be organized about this” on day one. By winter the base is the whimsical equivalent of a house with a couch in the yard.
One of the best and most frustrating things about don't starve is that it tells you almost nothing. These videos are truly helpful. Keep up the good work.

And it takes me forever to figure out where each recipe that I want to make is located and takes me forever to do that too. I think I feel even more overwhelmed after watching the video! @@salendrak true, i played a bit of DST before end usually did full time gardening throughout the growth seasons. The crops were always need for Pierogi and sometimes as fillers. And it's fun with all the mechanics it has there.
Awesome! It's a great game, but really common for new players to give up early on because it can be pretty hard and VERY punishing! But tons of fun once you get past the initial learning curve!
Nice thing about those though is you can re-plant them to spread things out!! Might cost you some more manure / rot, but it's not too bad, and worth it to get a layout you enjoy =)
"Oh, I can just step away for a few minutes. It'll be fine!" /dead Don't worry, I'm sure that's happened to me a time or two, especially playing with kids running around! 😂
@@salendrak good news i made a new base with wendy but did not know that the area was infested with killer bees me and abigail have been at war with them for 4 days we are winning oh and ive reached day 18 the best ive done wish me luck :D
"Unless he starves first." Full hunger, I think ill recover. Wait willow still has burns everything when shes insane what version are you on for that horror to happen.
It definitely takes some practice and refinement to find a system that you like. I've made this layout enough times now that I can slap it down pretty fast!
If playing as webber, it's better to setup your base among big bunch of spiders nests, especially when there are lvl 2 and 3's. You'll have a lot of minions close to yourself, protection from bosses and hounds, infinite meat, heal and net sourse.
Yup - he LOVES his many-legged friends! Though be very careful in summer and future autumns, as fire from red hounds will take out the nests (and the forests, and everything else) really fast!
So my strategy right now is: Watch a video in this series, play with those tips until I die, then watch the next video, repeat over and over until I'm cracked at this game.
Bro you gotta teach us the ways of placing stuff in a straight line like that. I feel like after playing minecraft and terraria so much I cant place anything in a straight line in this game.
Tbh, base building and farming is the least of my favorite when playing don't starve. I just love to explore and live like a nomad. Eating whatever I could find and picking any weird items I found but unfortunately my inventory space isn't that much even with backpack and chester. I love fighting random monsters too but I suck at kiting so I've never got really far playing don't starve. I want to play dst so I could leave base building and crafting to other player who love to do that but I don't have a pc. I wish they would release dst on mobile
It's a good guide, but I personally don't use drying racks if it isn't winter, because the jerky restores sanity, and I prefer to be insane to farm the nightmare fuel
A perfectly viable approach! I generally only use jerky as a back-up food for getting patched up after, say, fighting a Deerclops, or getting back to sane when I intentionally go crazy to farm shadow fuel. Although some players like to stay pretty crazy all the time, I get annoyed by the distortion effects and sounds. What can I say - I prefer the cheery world!!
@@salendrak Well, it's true that fighting the deerclops while insane is VERY annoying, but the only negative thing of insanity (apart from shadow creatures, beardlings and beardlords) is that the forest turf during the dusk has got the same color of the shadow creatures. It's almost impossible see them without pointing the cursor on them, but I have pocket edition. There is no way to see the shadow creatures without wasting resources, like using the miner hat during the dusk or making a campfire
@@salendrak oh, an when I rrstore sanity, I generally don't use jerky, because the crock pot meals restore tiny sanity, but if paired with a good ol' tam'o'shanter, I haven't got real problems about sanity. But in winter it was REALLY useful to restore health quickly without wasting hunger points
Speaking of jerky, once I stockpile enough of it if I can’t find enough green caps, I start eating raw small meats to go insane and murder all the beardlings that I’ve captured to farm beard hairs for meat effigy. Eat jerky to restore sanity once I’m done.
Should I use the leafy meat farm creator thing as a food source too? Also I think it may help me get past hound attacks but I really dunno if its worth it
I'm not a fan of leafy meat in general, as there are other foods and foods sources that are much better. A patch of eye plants works well against hounds in Spring, but in summer and fall a firehound will burn them up fast!
Thanks! I typically end up making two to three more rows of chests as I accumulate more and more stuff, but the basic method keeps the clutter down and allows me to usually find things pretty quickly!
Mostly because other than the minimap and combined status mods, I've never used any other mods. And also because there's plenty of people that play on platforms that can't have mods! In DST though I think there is a thing that allows you to easily mark paired wormholes, which is nice. But I have no issue with people using mods to do the same thing.
Is there a way to see in game which property (hunger, health, sanity) each food item restores? That’s what I’m struggling with right now.. even if I make some food, I never know which one I need to restore health so I end up trying and thus wasting precious food that I could’ve saved for the right moment… the stats you show for the food really helps but wish i could see that info in game too 😕
There are mods that add that information, but on the base game, no. I've never personally used those mods, but do remember learning the game with a couple of key wiki pages open almost all the time, including the crockpot recipes. Once you learn a few key recipes by heart though it gets much simpler. Have you seen my food guide?
@@salendrak ah I see. I got tired of taking notes/having the wiki open when I play games lol so I’ve just been trying to remember things and figure things out just as I play but not easy with this game 😅 I’ll def check out your food guide! Slowly making my way through your videos.. thanks!
Other (and actually better options) are cooked green caps, cooked cactus flesh, and jerky. Once you get a Tam 'o Shanter maintaining high sanity is really easy!
Yes - eventually! My plan is to cover all the basics of RoG first and then move on to SW. So for RoG we still need to cover Spring, Summer, Caves and Ancient Ruins, Adventure Mode, and any other major topics that warrant a full guide. But don't worry - I'll get to SW eventually!
@@salendrak Your guides are incredibly helpful... I've been playing this game for a while now... but I really suck at it... after watching your vids... I'm gradually starting to get the hang of it... your explanations are very clear and specific ... it actually helps a ton for noobs like me...
Apparently the standard base configuration used in this video isn't viable in DST. They've increased the collision radius of the crockpot such that you end up with a diamond shape instead of the standard rotated square.
Are you using geometric placement? You can still get a good formation a couple of ways. Option 1 - place left and right crock pots on the X just inside the lines of the tile, then for the top and bottom use your eyeballs and squish them in as close as you can with geometric placement off. Might not be a perfect square, but still allows room for at least 2 ice boxes in the middle. Option 2 - place all 4 crock pots on the cross-lines of the tiles. This ends up a bit more spaced out and might look funny depending on what you're doing with underlying turfs, but leaves PLENTY of space to fit ice boxes and/or salt boxes in between the pots such that you can reach all 4 pots from any of the food storages.
Disclaimer - I personally don't like using flingos so I can stay at my main base during the summer. Takes to many to protect everything, and there's still things that can sometimes go wrong. Instead, I prefer to set up a very small satellite base where there isn't much flammable stuff nearby, such as the desert, and just use one flingo for my flamable mini-base structures, such as a chest or three, maybe 2 crock pots, and a couple of drying racks.
I made base in forest with spider because Im playing webber and im cutting trees that if they would catch on fire would burn everything and abou not eating monster meat for me its well yes but actually no. Good video
@@salendrak so my base ended up by that I wasn't prepared for summer because I didn't noticed that i have first spring and no autumn so i burned to death but I have now new world and i opened chest with fridge that was trap and i have summer but now I'm prepared i have cold fire ton of food so I'll survive those 16 days of summer
Love your guides, but one question do you have to build fences, wood walls, or stone walls around your base or does it not matter if you don’t build stone walls around your base?
Walls can be used as decoration and in a few niche farming methods and bait pens, but they're overall pretty useless. There is NO need to surround you base with walls. To the contrary, it's a BAD idea to surround your base with walls!
I honestly haven't played all that much as Webber. Just a little bit here and there. Wendy is pretty fun, but honestly she's a lot better in DST with the update they did last year. She's my wife's favorite!

@@salendrak true, i played a bit of DST before end usually did full time gardening throughout the growth seasons. The crops were always need for Pierogi and sometimes as fillers. And it's fun with all the mechanics it has there.
Thank you very much . Im a noob in this game and i want to become better .Keep the good work
You're very welcome - hope the videos help!!
Ur guides are soo good wtfff. Nice vid. Love this fkin game and I haven’t even played it yet. Only dst
Give it a go!! Similar yet very different experience compared to DST, especially when you add Shipwrecked and/or Hamlet to the mix!
Let’s goooooooooo. I wanted to learn this since I got the game
Woot woot!!
Your guides are super useful, I'm new to don't starve and theses helped me alot lol.
Awesome! It's a great game, but really common for new players to give up early on because it can be pretty hard and VERY punishing! But tons of fun once you get past the initial learning curve!
this helped alot thanks (:
You're most very welcome!!
How did I never learn I can shave beefalo what a life change
That wool comes in handy!!
"However, gardens are generally considered an inefficient food source."
Wicker mains: Looks like someone doesn't want any dragonpie...
Hahah - basically! Wickerbottom can definitely be considered an exception to that general rule 😉
Wow, your videos are great!
Thanks - much appreciated!!
Thank you for the good training
May it serve you well! 👍
A perfect follow up to your first video
Nice guide, messed up my base a bit because I placed the berry bushes and grass too close.
Nice thing about those though is you can re-plant them to spread things out!! Might cost you some more manure / rot, but it's not too bad, and worth it to get a layout you enjoy =)
this was great for me i was watching and building my base but i forgot to pause when night was coming and died lol
"Oh, I can just step away for a few minutes. It'll be fine!" /dead
Don't worry, I'm sure that's happened to me a time or two, especially playing with kids running around! 😂
@@salendrak good news i made a new base with wendy but did not know that the area was infested with killer bees me and abigail have been at war with them for 4 days we are winning oh and ive reached day 18 the best ive done wish me luck :D
Dayuuum!!! Chill😵😵😵😵😵😵
😁
Realy solid, well made video. Greetings ;)
"Unless he starves first." Full hunger, I think ill recover. Wait willow still has burns everything when shes insane what version are you on for that horror to happen.
Don't starve. The character revamps are for don't starve together.
My world spawned with all its level 3 spider dens together in the middle of this intersection I use:)
Free monster meat!!
Oh my gosh I forgot that monsterifying the pigmen basically maxes their loot drops.
No no no, it's not "mosterifying", it's "evolving" to their best and highest form! Meat and pigskin!! 😆
Great tips for organizing the base. That was the hardest part for me so fat :-)
@@salendrak start at autumn and you'll have enough time to get snow turrets or I forgot the name
Honestly your channel is great and the guides help a lot keep up the good work
Thanks - comments like this are why I keep at it! 😁
Awesome awesome awesome 👏🏼 😍
Thanks 🤗
So my strategy right now is: Watch a video in this series, play with those tips until I die, then watch the next video, repeat over and over until I'm cracked at this game.
Sounds like a solid approach to me!
@@salendrak Also quick question. I found this Maxwell's Door thing. Do I go through it or no?
thanks helped a lot
😁
Not sure if this a Beginner's guide of Don't starve or 2020 ultimate survival guide. XD
Nice video btw
Right? Perhaps someday I'll do a comedy / parody video on applying lessons from Don't Starve to real life 😜
Bro you gotta teach us the ways of placing stuff in a straight line like that. I feel like after playing minecraft and terraria so much I cant place anything in a straight line in this game.
It's simple! You gotta just either have LOTS of practice, or just use Geometric Placement 😆
@@salendrak um is it a mod?
This video is great! Could you make one about getting supplies/items for different clothing items per season? I have no idea how to get some things.
His first video does that kinda
Tbh, base building and farming is the least of my favorite when playing don't starve. I just love to explore and live like a nomad. Eating whatever I could find and picking any weird items I found but unfortunately my inventory space isn't that much even with backpack and chester. I love fighting random monsters too but I suck at kiting so I've never got really far playing don't starve. I want to play dst so I could leave base building and crafting to other player who love to do that but I don't have a pc. I wish they would release dst on mobile
I find the first couple of weeks of a new world to generally be the most enjoyable time of a playthrough. I love the initial exploration stage!
Thx for the help !
Sure thing - good luck out there!
great info..straight to the point...me gusta
Right on!
Whoa - you must be, like, a Don't starve gamer!! 😆
@@salendrak a rookie gamer lol
@@eddielim3909 it's nightmare fuel, not beard hair. I personally prefer the resurrection amuleth
thanks so much
Very welcome!!
This one does sparks joy lighters spark fire
Uh oh - don't burn your base down!! 🤣
Should I use the leafy meat farm creator thing as a food source too? Also I think it may help me get past hound attacks but I really dunno if its worth it
I'm not a fan of leafy meat in general, as there are other foods and foods sources that are much better. A patch of eye plants works well against hounds in Spring, but in summer and fall a firehound will burn them up fast!
day 6, oh sweet this wormhole has lots of boulders, oh look a deer, dead.
Welcome to Don't Starve!! 😆
You are the BEST 🥰
D'awwww - thanks!! 😘
On a recent update, monster meat doesn't have to be cooked to feed it to the bird
Yeah - that's a super nice change!
I'm watching this cuz imma gonna get d game so il be prepared plz wish me luck for getting d game
Good luck! And don't sweat it when you die as you're learning the game - death is a great teacher, and it's all part of the process!
Great storage method.
Thanks! I typically end up making two to three more rows of chests as I accumulate more and more stuff, but the basic method keeps the clutter down and allows me to usually find things pretty quickly!
Tbh im depressed and this helped when you said individual gamer
what happens if you put chester's eye on chester and chester dies? will he not respawn?
When Chester dies he drops all of his contents, so the eye bone would fall on the floor, and he will re-spawn as normal. Good question though!
@@salendrak thanks! I was afraid to try it myself.
I don't think you touch on it in this video, but why use signs and traps to mark important resources instead of a simple mod?
Mostly because other than the minimap and combined status mods, I've never used any other mods. And also because there's plenty of people that play on platforms that can't have mods!
In DST though I think there is a thing that allows you to easily mark paired wormholes, which is nice. But I have no issue with people using mods to do the same thing.
@@salendrak ah that's fair, I forgot about console. Mods are hard to break away from once you try them
Is there a way to see in game which property (hunger, health, sanity) each food item restores?
Slowly making my way through your videos.. thanks!
i've known about this game when i was still in 7th grade. i'm already 19 now, and i still suck
Time to change that!!
Wow, that is a lot of micromanagement. Also, what is a good alternative for regaining sanity other than picking flowers or making a garland?
Other (and actually better options) are cooked green caps, cooked cactus flesh, and jerky. Once you get a Tam 'o Shanter maintaining high sanity is really easy!
HeY tHats Me At 0:00
Heheh - been a while since I looked back at that video. I still like that intro segment 😆
I don't know where a should give you requests so i'll just comment it here... can you also please do guides for ship wrecked edition?
Yes - eventually! My plan is to cover all the basics of RoG first and then move on to SW. So for RoG we still need to cover Spring, Summer, Caves and Ancient Ruins, Adventure Mode, and any other major topics that warrant a full guide.
But don't worry - I'll get to SW eventually!
@@salendrak Your guides are incredibly helpful... I've been playing this game for a while now... but I really suck at it... after watching your vids... I'm gradually starting to get the hang of it... your explanations are very clear and specific ... it actually helps a ton for noobs like me...

Me: survives 1000 days in dst but still watches this video...
I'm honored!!
Shouldve watched this sooner now deersclips wrecked my base
Happens to the best of us at least a time or two before we get it down!
@@salendrak yeah I tried turning it off to practice placing the pots in a test world but I don't have your knack for placement :(
@@jordanchen23 Well, to be fair, I've had LOTS of practice with that particular configuration! 😆
I died from looking at my self

@@salendrak no I looked in a mirror
@@peashootergaming1026 😱
Can you please also advise where to place the flingomatic? Thanks mate.
Good video
Yeah, Webber definitely has some features that allow you to mix things up a bit!
@@trotlicek6664 Nice! Just make it through summer and it'll be smooth sailing for Fall!
@@salendrak Thanks!

I honestly haven't played all that much as Webber. Just a little bit here and there. Wendy is pretty fun, but honestly she's a lot better in DST with the update they did last year. She's my wife's favorite!
