    I'm sure someone has already pointed this out, but the ''shapeshifter'' aka the beautiful woman who lured the men into the forest is called Skogsrå in swedish. In swedish mythology she's the protector of the forest but you don't wanna piss her off, haha. She's known for the hole in her back. She's one of my favorite mythical beings in our folklore. Anyway, absolutely loved watching this. You have a new follower!

      That helps to explain why Tuva asked what he had done after he killed her as if he did something wrong, from our perspective she was evil but from the forests perspective I imagine the humans were harming it.

      Skogsrå was a fascinating character and I wondered why I'd never heard of her before. I think Näcken was my favorite antagonist, though. I'm a sucker for a tragic story.

    Swedish translation of the game.
    At 1:03:10 the beautiful song played, is named “Den blomstertid nu kommer”, it´s a summer psalm and it is very well known to every Swede, as it usually plays at every end of school year before summer break. Although it’s more of a “normal” song today, than a religious one.
    For me, this song just makes me warm and only reminds me of the excitement of summer, to play outdoors and basically live in a similar nature as to the game, except for all the fables. But I did hear of them as a child from my parents.
    At 2:23:56 the text on the wall says “Straffet väntar hädaren och prygel dårens rygg”, which in direct translation would be, 'Punishment awaits the hypocrite and flogging of the fool's back'.
    It derives from what is called in Swedish as ”Ordspråksboken", (Eng: the book of proverbs), it is an old testament book of 'wisdom literature' and consists of six smaller collections, containing wise sayings and 'rules of life' that show how to righteous life.
    I´m not sure of the context in this game but considering she´s in a chair with some crank into the back, I assume she´s the hypocrite.
    At 2:44:50 I think it´s actually an Easter egg, referring to a famous Swedish humor group called Grotesco, who made a sketch called “1 kilo mjöl”, (Eng: 1 kilo of flour). If you look at the set up, it does remind of an old styled grocery store, as in the sketch.
    I put the link here if anyone is interested: czcams.com/video/AQIxZMUWUpU/video.html
    Fun fact, the same group made a satire of Russian stereotypes in 2009, which put Sweden in the hot chair but really, I loved it!

    That nymph thing you fought in those 3 stages was not the witch or baby killer. She was the one who led all the men to there doom from the town or village or whatever that you later visited. She’s kinda like a siren but like a land one lol. Also the old lady you face later with the rake caused the plague that turned everyone that was left in the village into basically zombies.

      @shannonmichael4773 Před rokem +51

      @@MadMorph you don’t ever encounter her apart from when you were trying to follow her and save the baby and failed. Whatever she was trying to do she succeeded and I guess did her last sacrifice and killed herself too. She was trying to make sacrifices to like become some kinda demon like thing but we never see what happened with that. Because yea the water nymph thing was not the witch. And I don’t believe the old lady with the rake was either. They were separate beings and threats that had terrorized a town for ages

    • @shannonmichael4773
      @shannonmichael4773 Před rokem +13

      No your referring to the creature that was in the water playing the violin and I’m not talking about him. As I mentioned in my comment I’m referring to the creature he faces that has 3 phases. The female seductive nymph like thing that Ole encounters and stabs in the back where her heart was with Courage that turned into a holy blessed looking sword. That creature was the one that led men from the village to there doom posing as a beautiful woman to lure them into the forest where she killed then gruesomely to get there hearts and gain more power from them. The witch that killed the baby is never shown again. She was a normal human like being apart from her dark magic after she sacrificed the baby she killed herself it seems. She was meaning to transform herself into some powerful being but I don’t think it worked lol. Because she was not the female nymph thing he fought. She had existed well before anything the witch ever did. So either that random encounter could be like a tease to maybe a threat for the next game or it was just some random crazy witch you encountered who believed she would gain power and a new body by sacrificing babes to some unknown entity but nothing comes of it.

    I'm a couple of months late, but I wanted to say your voice is surprisingly peaceful for a horror game playthrough and I'm here for it. Also, wanted to explain some of the inspiration behind some of the things in this game:
    The Light Stone: it is literally the Spark of Courage. Olle loses it when he loses his sister, but after having survived his first night in Bramble, he gains a little bit of confidence. Aristotle's virtues and vices say that excess courage is rashness, which Olle exhibits when he fights the Skogra, stabbing her relentlessly with little thought to the consequences. He falls back to cowardice and has to regain his confidence when he fights Pesta.
    Nacken: based off of a nixie, or water spirit, specifically the Nokk from Nordic folklore, who plays songs on an enchanted violin to lure women and children to drown in the lakes. Not all were malevolent, as some stories just had them play music for others for entertainment.
    Tuva: based off of Helge Kjellen's fairytale Skutt the Moose and Princess Tuvstarr. Also based off of John Bauer's painting Princess Tuvstarr gazing down into the dark waters of the forest tarn. Only in image and name.
    Karrhaxen: the midwife in the swamp, themed after a Slavic house spirit called Kikimora. Kikimora were spirits created from tragic deaths (women and children only). Not all were evil and were actually known to help in the household, but the ones that originated from the swamps were evil. These kikimora were women who killed themselves, women who succumbed to the influence of demons, children who died unbaptized, and stillborn babies came back as kikimora. Specifically, the women would return with animal like features, like goat horns and glowing eyes while the children returned as black spirits.
    Skogsra: based off the Scandinavian forest spirit, hulder. Specifically called the Skogsra. They are described to be beautiful women with the tail of some animal, usually a cow, and a hollowed out tree like back.
    Draugr: nordic zombies. That's it.
    Pesta: the plague hag, brought about as a personification of the Black Death. When in town, if she brought her rake, some would survive, passing through the teeth of the rake. If she brought her broom, all would die.
    King Nils: loosely based off of Dovregubben, the troll king in the Norwegian play Per Gynt, from which the song In the Hall of the Mountain King originated from, specifically during the scene in which Peer Gynt flees Dovregubben and his trolls.

    personally love the violin guy segment and the final boss.. great use of the music and timing the boss fight and attack to the song. can say it isn't easy thing to do.. but the devs did it masterful here.
    always find it fun when game devs use the actual in game music as well as the spund effects to ad layers to attacks.
    combat is largely a dance and has a tempo, so devs making use of that always makes me happy.

    I was wondering why the song at 1:03:10 sounded so familiar! As a Finnish person recognized the melody as "Suvivirsi", but with a little googling I'm not at all surprised that it's Swedish in origin, goes by the name "Den blomstertid nu kommer". Both versions sing about summer coming, and it's usually sung at the end of school year to celebrate the coming summer holidays!
    The Swedish name translates to 'Now the time of blossoming arrives', while the Finnish name roughly means 'Summer hymn' or 'song of summer', 'Suvi' being a synonym for 'Kesä', meaning summer.

    Loved the playthrough. As always, Morph, I'm delighted you continue introducing me to new and unusual (especially foreign) experiences! Little Nightmares games are in a category all their own to me, but it was just as good story wise, and more stunning visually, in some ways. And so accomplished! Doing it all in one seamless, deathless playthrough. ;)
    I was saddened, greatly, by the death of the shapeshifter. Tuva also seemed to indicate that this was a SAD THING, that, perhaps, shouldn't have been done? There weren't any real repercussions (other than regret) for doing so... still. Sadness. Perhaps because the shapeshifter (aesthetically) was presented more as a nature being (branches growing from head, greenish skin). Like... the land just beyond where she was killed (and turned or was covered in moss?) was blackened, scorched -- a wasteland. The opposite ambiance to the area leading up to the confrontation with the shapeshifter. *sighs* Maybe it's just me.
    I think (and have pondered the same in the past)... that maybe that's a common motif for Scandinavian folklore to be emotionally/morally ambivalent about their "monsters", or myths. I felt the same way watching the Witcher 3 promo advert about Geralt killing the vampire in the barn ( czcams.com/video/jRqz14Vgs08/video.html ). Felt an amount of sorrow for the vampire's death. I think mostly because of the way it was framed.
    Thanks again for a marvelous, flawless, thoroughly enchanting journey, through a magical game I wouldn't even have known existed were it not for yourself.

      @user-gu9yq5sj7c Před rokem +1

      The story book said the shapeshifter killed men and hung them on trees and used their beating hearts.
      2:11:34 When Olle fought her, there were beating hearts on the trees. She attacked Olle. She's evil, and Olle needed to defend himself. Why are you sympathetic for evil villains? Is it just because you like the way she looks?

    • @TheGizmoWolf
      @TheGizmoWolf Před rokem +3

      @@user-gu9yq5sj7c *scratches head* I'm pretty sure the fight between poor Olle and the shapeshifter was -unavoidable- . That being, there would be no way to progress in the game without the confrontation, and death, of the shapeshifter. So, mechanically, the game agrees (on many levels) that this was a creature to be vanquished. Also, in the very next part of my statement, I say I felt sorry for the vampire, and speculate it was because of the way the cinematic framed the encounter with Geralt.
      The character's femininity, voice or level of modesty had literally nothing to do with my reaction. Which was, in this instance, sadness, moreso that the confrontation was unavoidable. If something attacks you, unprovoked, you defend yourself.
      I was trying to find meaning in Tuva's comment, "Olle, what have you done?" Olle himself seemed to feel a measure of regret for the death. Or perhaps his regret was related to his own brutal response?
      Evil is a perspective.
      I'm a writer. We spread our empathy around.

    I like the visuals, music, culture, puzzles, story, embroidery on their clothes, and carvings.
    I'm glad the siblings survived. The ending with Lillemor in her room was kinda anticlimatic. But I'm glad Olle learned to be brave.
    Aw, you don't get to take justice on the witch who killed the babies? You said the shapeshifter might be the witch, but what evidence is there to that?

    I appreciate that you try to be brave and not scream when you play horror games. 56:47 Thanks for commenting and clicking on what's in the game. Like the mouse. Cause it was too dark it's hard for me to see. Thanks for trying to explode and pick up the figurines.

    I’m the oldest at 26. I am “Big sister” to a 24 year old brother and 14 year old sister. I picked on my brother constantly growing up and we argued all the time since we were only 2 years apart but now i literally adore him lol. I would throw hands for my little bro. Love having siblings. Being an only-child would have been so lonely since I never had a lot of friends growing up
