I've had the original system since I saw your review a few months ago, and I love it. I think it has opened up a world of functionality for the more casual EDC knife enthusiast like myself. Frankly, even if I were to be willing or able to learn to maintain the edges on my knives with a set of bench stones, I'm not experienced enough to identify a set of good size and quality at the $50 price point, if there is such a thing.
The original set is really a must-buy no-brainer for just about anyone who owns even one knife, and the upgrade kit allows you to take it up a notch without regret for dipping your toes in first. I may buy it at some point, but with my current setup and a stand-alone strop, I'm getting excellent results for my needs. Thanks, Nick, and hats off to WorkSharp for giving us novices a way to get superior sharpening results quickly and easily!

I use lapping films on mine and love it, but I bought the upgrade also. For me, I would've bought the case by itself, but I thought the full upgrade for $75 was pretty reasonable. I haven't used the new stones yet. I just received it a few days ago and haven't had to sharpen anything yet, but I like the case. I was able to fit in the two 3d printed blocks that I use with the lapping films.
I don't think I've read or heard anyone that doesn't like these. Before the upgrade I'd read complaints about little things but everyone seemed to agree it's a cool little sharpener for a pretty darn good price. The only real complaint I remember reading and hearing since these sharpeners were first released were the same, and only, complaint I had; Why weren't these releases years ago! 😂🤣. I think it's a great idea. I agree with you and I can't imagine anyone that doesn't agree! I think that around $50 (sales happen & coupons happen and I bought mine about a year ago when they were first released for $35) is a very reasonable price for the basic kit and $75 is a reasonable upgrade price for anyone that likes it. You're not paying that much more by buying them separately also. I think they hit it out of the park with the original, and hit it out of the park again with this upgrade.

In my exp… in my learning with the base kit I used up my stones. They had bald spots (but still “worked”).. When this dropped I was looking at buying replacement stones which was going to cost about $30 ish I think. so buying the upgrade kit really made sense for me! Also the addition of the case was really my favorite part 😂

  • @jimsheppard910
    @jimsheppard910 Před 2 lety +5

I love mine. Been using it for about a year. The only problem I have found is that the stones don't tend to last long especially reprofiling a blade.

The original Precision Adjust sharpener is my go to for many of my knives. However, I am very disappointed that the ball joints on the stone rods have been replaced with plastic sockets on the newer stone rods. I noticed that when I recently purchased an upgrade kit for my older model Precision Adjust. I had hoped the quality would continue when the upgrades became available but I guess cost cutting is more important.

The best thing I’ve tried for sharpening serrations is a needle file. With a serrated blade, you’re not really sharpening a knife, you’re sharpening a saw. If the blade, like that Spyderco Nick showed, has more than one size of serration, you’ll probably need two sizes or shapes of files.

I’m a bench stone snob…that’s the only way to put it. If it’s not freehand, I don’t give it a second look. But what I *can* say about this is that it’s probably very good. I’ve encountered a few worksharp gadgets throughout the years and they’ve all been fantastic. My favorite is this little travel sharpener that doubles as a torx bit screwdriver. I got it as a “free gift” with an eBay knife purchase and I’ve had one in my bag ever since. It’s just unbelievably useful.

If you buy the Eliete you get the system, 2 stone rod's , case and the leather strop. If you buy the starter kit AND the upgrade kit you then get 3 stone rods" which will fill up the empty rod space in the rod plate " along with ALMOST everything to have a complete kit. You will also need a green compound stick to apply to the leather strop or it will eventually fall apart.

The upgrade kit just doesn't make sense at $80. The strop/serration rod is pretty useless, 3 of the grits are already in the base kit, so you're pretty much getting 3 additional grits and a case. If they had just made the 3 additional grits on a single $20-$30 rod it would've been awesome. The base kit is so good because it provides amazing value and the upgrade kit seems like the opposite of that.

The price of the upgrade kit was just too steep for the overall quality of the Precision Adjust sharpening tool in my opinion. Given that I got the Precision Adjust for $40.00, shelling out an additional $80 for more stones and a strop that was going to have the same limitations as the original just gave me the push I needed to step up to a full KME sharpening system that will do a much better job on knives without sharpening choils. Plus, the 7" blade length limitation was beginning to catch up with me as I had sharpened all of my shorter knives, but now the longer edges cannot be handled by this system.
At the end of the day, I am thrilled that Worksharp took this option on pricing because I took a step up in my sharpening tools.

It was not possible to get the blade holder to hold still, it tilts down with even the slightest pressure from the stone, making it impossible to get a consistent angle on the edge. Ponied up the extra cash for the KME. The whole thing is flimsy and does not deliver repeatable results, which is the whole point of this style of sharpener.

First off, if you’re moving the clamp - you’re just pushing too hard. If you watch this video you can see the clamp doesn’t move at all because he’s just letting the weight of the stone do the work. Second, you can buy a 3D printed clamp brace for about $10 or you can print one for free (a lot of libraries have free access to 3D printers). They have adjustable versions, I like the squarish no adjustable one that has a spot to hold your sharpie. You can also get a 3D printed lapping accessory with a set of films really cheap, to get a true mirror polish on your edge.

"but I like to have a longer stroke length on that kind of thing", that's what she said.

I think the base model Worksharp Precision Adjust is definitely worth the $50, but in my opinion the upgrade kit is not worth it. For a few bucks more you might as well just get a KME. So basically if you just care about working edges the base model Worksharp is good enough, if you want refined mirror finishes and wicked sharp edges get the KME. There’s also the $30 ebay sharpeners that do pretty damn good and they take the standard Hapstone sized stones so you can always take those stones upgrade to a different system down the road.

I certainly agree here. A bunch of Etsy 3D printed stuff to make this "toy" more usable?.... just get the KME.

This is really silly. You pay again for the 3 stones you already have/come with the basic kit. Why didn't they skip all of that and make a first-party stone adapter like is already popular?

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm czcams.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

I have one, and the stones have become unglued after three uses. I’m obviously not impressed. You get what you pay for I guess.

I see they cheesed out with the new arms and the area that attaches to the swivel ball is now PLASTIC.
    Pushing me towards KME.
