Wonder why this song makes a 40 year old man , who is not even that familiar with country music, weep...literally, with tears streaming down my cheeks. Actually, I know exactly why. It seems to be the song of the girl I used to love who is no more now. Rest in peace Vicki. You're home now.

Love it when Bobby laughs and sings "I'm five THOUSAND miles away from home" towards the end. Thus making the song, in 1964, like a plaintive letter from the GIs in Vietnam.

I heard him perform this song at the Texas club, in Baton Rouge, La many years ago. I love this song and it was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. I would merge his version into the PP&M version.
Bobby Bare was performing this concert in Oslo, Norway in April of 1964. He was accompanied by the Anita Kerr Singers and the Jim Reeves Band the "Blue Boys." This is truly one of my favorite classic country music songs. It is a shame that they don't write country music like this anymore.
We’re all getting older continually and it’s sad one by one these wonderful musicians will be gone. Sure hope there’s a heaven and a music section for all of us to hear our favorites throughout eternity. Thanks, Bobby Bare for you and your voice and songs.

the sound of the voice is so magnificent; they don't make'em like that anymore. So many artists from that era got that special voice and I can't describe it; listen to roy orbison, lee hazlewood, the ronettes; whatever; their voices are just so different than anything today; weird.. and I love it
Reason is because of the stereo equipment they recorded on and the sound of their voice was natural with zero editing other than noise reduction/ cancellation. Now day and since the 80s they have been using hi fi equipment which now is termed high res. Everything is digital now. Voices are encrypted and then decoded. Back then it was just the sound of minute scratches on vinyl

I don't think there's a bad version of this timeless classic - thank you Hedy West. Although this was the most commercially succesful version I prefer the folk versions to the country one - the best being The Seekers.
Oh what a classic. I'd give anything to go back to those happy days of innocence. Long live Mr. Bare & his great music. The fact he's singing in Germany shows the magnitude of his reach & appeal.
I'm currently on a hitchhiking trip across the united states working my way from Maine to Washington state. this song has been on my mind, just about the entire trip because my grandfather used to sing it to himself under his breath whenever things were quiet. I only just now learned the name of the song and singer, and I guarantee I will be playing this song at every bars jukebox whenever available. I'm currently 800 miles from home, planning on traveling 600 more by train due to the generosity of a very kind Marine Corps Vet that served in Korea, and saw combat. he's been telling me stories about the war, about hitchhiking everywhere he went when he was younger, and many many other stories as well. I have been enjoying his company very much, and I will be sad when we part ways. this man stopped by the road and asked me if I needed a ride while I was on my way to find a farm to earn a few dollars at. I wasn't even hitching at the time, he saw me going up a big hill with a heavy pack, and just stopped by. i thanked him for his service immediately after he mentioned he is a vet. and I'd like to thank any vets in any branch of the service that might be reading this. so, thank you for your service, and I appreciate everything that's has been given up so we may be free to have journeys like mine.
+Lukas GoodMusic well, damn. A lot has happened since I met Don in Canajoharie. He bought me a train ticket to Cleveland, Ohio, which I gratefully accepted. on a layover, I met a couple old hippies watching out for what they called "bomb trains" which are essentially freight trains loaded with highly combustible, highly volatile materials or liquids. one of them handed me a 20 and asked me please not to spend it on tobacco, so I vowed to him that I would not. when I arrived in Cleveland, at 5 am, I hung out in the train station for around 2 and a half hours until the sun came up. I wanted to visit the rock and roll hall of fame, but they weren't open until 10. I ended up finding my way to a memorial park for the Navy and Air force, and cleaned up litter before paying my respects and taking pictures. when 10 neared, I was able to enter the rock and roll hall of fame for a price of 23 dollars, which I spent the previous money given to me on. after a few hours of seeing the sights, I sat outside a while and proceeded to find a good shoulder on the side of the road I could hitch at. I walked straight west out of Cleveland on superior ave, and into Lakewood. I was informed that Lakewood was not a city I could legally hitchhike in, so I walked back to Cleveland where I found a very small shoulder, which was my only option. I flew my sign there, which read "I wouldn't pick me up either! west please!" for about 25 minutes before a man picked me up and brought me to his house to relax and have a couple beers. while I was there, he loaded me up on all kinds of gear that he brought wit him when he hitchhiked halfway across the country. stuff like a personal tent, a trekking pole, bear mace, a small tackle box for the fishing gear I was given in NY. a canteen with a pouch I could separate from, liquid candles, and probably more that I've unfortunately forgotten about. he also doubled the amount of money I had on me, which left me with a total of 120. after all that, he brought me back to the train station, where I waited until they opened. he literally told me "Take this, and go as far west as it'll take you by train." so I did. I bought a ticket from Cleveland, Ohio to creston, Iowa, where I made my way to the Twilight Zone Night Club. there was only the bartender, and one customer when I entered. the bartender seemed impressed that I was able to make it halfway across the country in only two weeks, and kept buying me drinks. he brought me to his house, because he had a vacant apartment above his garage he was willing to let me sleep and shower in. I was very grateful of course, as always. he fed me breakfast in the morning, and brought me to a cornerstone on rt 34 so I could head west from there. I stood there on the side of the road for nearly 10 hours with a sign reading "hitchhikers are dangerous" and eventually a couple of girls stopped with a pickup truck. "hop in the bed!" of course I obliged, tossing my stuff in, and myself after it. they brought me around the corner where I was able to introduce myself, and ask where they were headed. thy weren't going far, but they offered me a home cooked meal and a shower and place to sleep. I was tired, cold, and hungry, so I accepted gratefully. I ended up spending two weeks in that house. one of the girls didn't live there, but the other did, and I was able to make great friends. I'll post another comment soon. I have a cheap tablet, and the amount of typing I'm doing is slowing it severely.
the girl that did live at that house I was staying at had 3 beautiful daughters, and an extremely dickish boyfriend. I had noticed on my first day there that he had a short temper, and what I witnessed while there did not change my opinion in the slightest. about a week and a half of being there, the two started fighting over something petty. He approached her and started yelling, and swearing at her over her simply talking to a guy, who also had 3 kids, and a fiancée. I walked outside, because it wasnt my circus to be involved in. I heard him yell, I'm done, and he went inside to pack his stuff. he packed up a bag, took his Xbox, and went over to his Buddy's house. a few days passed, with no sign of him, so I started talking to this girl, and she seemed interested in me, well enough anyways. one night, we were sitting on the couch in her breezeway, drinking, talking, listening to music, purely having a good time, without touching or kissing. hell, we weren't even close enough on the couch for our knees to bump. at around 2am, the ex walks in, sees me on the couch, and just jumps on me, pounding on my face. I was drunk, so I had no clue what was going on until he was about halfway through, when I grabbed him by the shirt, and hooked an arm behind him to pull him closer so he couldn't hit me anymore. when he was done, I let him go, stood up, shook his hand, told him that by acting like that, he is not a man, he's still a boy, then I walked outside with my whisky, for a cigarette and to calm myself. I still slept there that night, upstairs, with my bear mace handy, and one eye open. the next day, I was packing up my bag to start heading out again when he left to go to the corner store for a pack of cigarettes. hours went by, and nobody heard from him, until one of his friends told the girl that he was headed to California. supposedly he had sold his Xbox, and bought a bus ticket. i decided to stay awhile anyways, because I wanted to heal up my left side of my face, my lips, and my black eyes and broken blood vessel in my left eye before hitting the road again. it wasn't two days before he started messaging her again, telling her that he's far away from home, and scared shirtless. I laughed when I heard about that. I laughed even harder when I heard that the dickwad didn't even make it a 3 hour drive away from home. he was in des Moines, Iowa! anyways, he was headed home, and I didn't want to have to act on anything, so I kept my mace handy as I packed my bag, and because it was late, I decided to see if I could spend the night on the couch at a Buddy's house just a couple houses down. the next morning, which was yesterday, I left them at about 9am, and started walking west on 34 with my thumb and a sign saying "Its not as bad as it looks!" after a few hours walking, a woman by the name Tammy picked me up, and brought me South to St. Joseph, Missouri, where she dropped me off at a gas station. before I got out of the car, she handed me a 100 dollar bill! I tried to refuse it, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. after about a half hour at the gas station, I met an older couple of hitchhikers after they were dropped off at the same station. we chatted for a while, and eventually we parted ways. after a few minutes, they came back! the woman had reportedly rolled her ankle, and wanted to see if we could go half on a motel to rest it for the night. my ankle was sore as well, so I obliged. we hailed a cab, and eventually found a motel to sleep in. this morning, I fed them breakfast at the neighboring burger king before we got a cab back to the gas station we met at. while I was trying to hit a ride out, an off duty trucker brought me to a truck stop, where I was able to find a ride to Omaha Nebraska, at another truck stop. I'm typing this as I sit in a Pilot\Arbys waiting until morning, when I'll be able to get a ride from a trucker that offered me a ride either south or west in the morning. he won't know which until morning, but my destination has changed from Washington to California, so either way, I'll be getting closer. I'm still going to Washington, but I have a buddy in San Diego who is stationed at the naval base that I'd like to see before the opportunity passes.

Hedy West (April 6, 1938 - July 3, 2005) was an American folksinger and songwriter. She belonged to the same generation of folk revivalists as Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Her most famous song "500 Miles" is one of America's most popular folk songs. She was described by the English folk musician A. L. We can't forget HEDY WEST author of this music!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a ladd of 15 when I first heard american country music. An old sergeant of the us armee who frequently came by to our restaurant in the frankfort area, took me to the nco and I had the very pleasure to hear this great singer; btw my favorite album is still that "down and dirty", he released in the early '80s. - Do hope, that my English hasn't gone that bad.

I'm 76 now almost 77. I just wonder when my daughter will be thinking and saying the same thing. sure hope not soon. I love life even though nothing but aches and pains.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1994. I was working at a convenience store in south Florida, he came in with Little Jimmy Dickens. They were doing a fishing show with Wade Reynolds . He is truly a Southern gentleman.
20 years old and on a lark I hitched hike from Phoenix, ariz back to my hometown in Iowa. Flagstaff 5:00am so cold waiting for a ride . Oklahoma City praying for a ride because it’s going to rain any minute. Excelsior Springs, Mo at 2:00 in the morning just hoping the cops didn’t see me sleeping downtown under this awning. When I finally got home I sat down on a park bench in the town square and thanked God that I made it back in one piece and promised myself I would NEVER do such a dumbass thing again!!! This song was running through my mind on that whole journey.
This song really hits hard when I listen to it. Even when I am home, it still makes me feel lonely. Also, for those of who say you can't use a 12-string for country, kiss it! Bobby Bare is one of the greatest country artists ever and he used 12-strings in his early years! I think the one he has in this video is a Gibson B-25 12.
@Case Southerland , my daddy was a self taught guitar player. He too played a 12 string and he sure could sing too. Had his own band and even his his own radio show for awhile. He sang only Country music.
Definitely know I am getting older when those dears who loved and sang this genre of songs with me are now many more than a million miles beyond the moon.

This song is so true about where our great America has gone ...so far away .. 😢
Technology has destroyed love, people and countries. Nowhere is the same anymore. I wished we never had this technology.
The 20th century had 2 world wars, the destruction of the family and more martyrs murdered because of their faith in Christ than the previous 19 centuries combined. Technology isn’t the problem, evil has been around since the dawn of time.

I lost my husband 10years ago so I know how hard it is to endure the pain, we just have to be strong for them okay. I'm a huge fan of Bobby bare his songs are so good it got me through those hard times, I also got the opportunity to meet him last year and became an official fan till date

You’ll never replace him but music and memories are mystical in their own rights. Brings back ALL the good memories.
Love it when Bobby laughs and sings "I'm five THOUSAND miles away from home" towards the end. Thus making the song, in 1964, like a plaintive letter from the GIs in Vietnam.
Love & crying..........

I'm a married girl living with in-laws, no matter how loving and caring they are towards me, I don't know how many miles I'm away from home- my real home. With the fragrance of my dad's sweat, and my mom's cooking, and the squeals of my siblings.
U need to go for a visit.
I'm 750 away, but it ain't home anymore.
I'm 500 miles away from home
Teardrops fell on momma's note
When I read the things she wrote
She said we miss you son we love you come on home
Well I didn't have to pack
I had it all right on my back
Now I'm 500 miles away from home
Away from home away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes, I'm 500 miles away from home
I know this is the same road I took the day I left home,
But it sure looks different now. And I guess I look
Different too, cause time changes everything. I wonder what
They'll say, when they see their boy looking this bad.
Oh I wonder what they'll say when I get home
Can't remember when I ate
It's just thumb and walk and wait
And I'm still 500 miles away from home
If my luck had been just right
I'd be with them all tonight
But I'm 500 miles away from home
Away from home away from home
Oh I'm still 500 miles away from home

Bobby Bare was performing this concert in Oslo, Norway in April of 1964. He was accompanied by the Anita Kerr Singers and the Jim Reeves Band the "Blue Boys." This is truly one of my favorite classic country music songs. It is a shame that they don't write country music like this anymore.
Thanks for the info. Cool.
We’re all getting older continually and it’s sad one by one these wonderful musicians will be gone. Sure hope there’s a heaven and a music section for all of us to hear our favorites throughout eternity. Thanks, Bobby Bare for you and your voice and songs.

The one about the soldier and his horse in the snowstorm almost making it back to Mary Ann marked my heart as a very very small child...
the sound of the voice is so magnificent; they don't make'em like that anymore. So many artists from that era got that special voice and I can't describe it; listen to roy orbison, lee hazlewood, the ronettes; whatever; their voices are just so different than anything today; weird.. and I love it
I am age 66 and I've been telling myself for 50 years that they had voices back then.
Jason Hunter
IMO, it's called singing....don't hear much anymore.

Loved this when I was a young kid
Please tell me more about youre Story...
wait to hear Form you
+Lukas GoodMusic well, damn.
This song of Bobby Bare always bring tears in my eyes as i am less than 5,000 miles away from home, missing you all guys back home.
