I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY (1949) by Hank Williams

  • One of my favourite Hank Williams songs. Hank recorded this track on 30 August 1949 in Ohio. With him were ace studio musicians: Zeke Turner (electric guitar), Louis Innes (rhythm guitar), Jerry Byrd (steel guitar), Ernie Newton (bass), and Tommy Jackson (fiddle). They were not part of the Drifting Cowboys who toured with Hank at that time (although a couple did do stints with them). The Drifting Cowboys did record with Hank on many other sessions.
According to Colin Escott who wrote a biography on Hank "Here is the chill of the void that would become one of the hallmarks of Hank's writing. It is the most oft cited example of Hank Williams the hillbilly poet, but its poetic form comes from the fact that it was originally intended to be spoken, not sung. Acuff-Rose staff writer Vic McAlpin said that Hank had written it for his first session of recitations slated for January 1950, but at some point he changed his mind. "I think ol' Hank needs to record this," he told McAlpin. Hank was concerned that some of the lines might sound self-consciously artsy and alienate his audience, but, as he so often did, he tried out the song on friends, fellow performers, and Fred Rose, and let them convince him that he had excelled".
Veteran Nashville songwriter Jimmy Rule recalls: "One day I was over at Acuff-Rose, our mutual publisher, and Hank handed me a piece of paper and said, "Do you think people will understand what I'm trying to say when I say this?" The line was 'Did you ever see a robin weep when leaves begin to die? It's because he's lost the will to live; I'm so lonesome I could cry'. Hank had this lonesome streak, and I think it was largely caused by his marital problems. I think he wrote it out of a feeling of loneliness that stayed very much with him. He would be the natural person to write 'I'm so lonesome I could cry'."
I have done my own slideshow video of this song, using as many images of Hank singing that I could find. Also included a few images of the musicians who played on this session, Jerry Byrd and Tommy Jackson. I hope that people not into Hank might take the time to explore his music.

Some are just a little more humorous, some a little bit more rock some a little bit more romantic etc Why not try maybe some Johnny Cash, (great traditional country), Creedence Clearwater Revival and Leonard Skinner, (a slight bit more rock). When you seek their music look for there "greatest hits". That way you will hear the best they have done. Enjoy my friend

Some other country singers such as George Jones and Hank Snow carried a lot of pain as well , but were fortunate to be healthier . There were other country singers such as Lefty Frizzle who were self destructive . The bluegrass singers Carter Stanley and Keith Whitley followed a similar path . The white blues singer/ guitar player / harmonica player , Alan " Blind Eye " Wilson of the blues band , Canned Heat , fit in a similar category .

I was born just up the road from where Hank Williams was born in South Alabama. Hank Williams still has a big influence here. Interstate 65 that runs through Butler county was designated as the Hank Williams Lost Highway by the state of Alabama sometime back. I recently met a gentleman and his wife from Great Britain that were passing through here not too long ago heading up to Montgomery to visit Hank Williams grave. He told me that he grew up hearing Hank Williams music and his dad and his Grandfather were huge Hank Williams fans. Strange how a man that died at the age of 29, right at 70 years ago, still has such a huge fan base, with music that people can relate to, that was written mostly by himself. Hank left this world way too early. But, he left a mark that will NEVER be forgotten or go away.

Hello David, I'm getting a bit stronger every day. I still have some that I can't believe he's gone. I'm trying to be positive but it's hard. They're having a celebration for Robert in December at a club that still hosts live bands. They've gotten the most popular radio DJ to host it. There are going to be 4 bands that Robert was in. Each one will be doing the music that they wrote and recorded. They are trying to get as many of the original members as possible to perform. In between each set they'll be showing videos of other projects he was involved in. He was with Mitch Ryder for 19 years while still pursuing his own music. He was considered one of the best lead guitarists to come out of Detroit. As I now have all of the memorabilia and photos, I've been going through 50 years of his life. I get sad but I realize he had an incredible life. More importantly he had fun. I'm glad I got to be with such an amazing man for 27 years. He was not only talented, but gifted. He played with Chuck Berry when he was 17. He went on to tour the world. He loved sharing his music with everyone, he taught guitar for many years. One of his students has gone on to reach the level of stardom that most musicians dream of. I'll be ok, thanks for asking.

    • @OneOfUsHere
      @OneOfUsHere Před rokem

@@marvintownsend9174 Thank You for asking. I'm going through hundreds of photos and memorabilia from a 50 year career. He didn't throw anything away but didn't file everything. I found dozens of videos and recordings. He was a far bigger " star " than I realized. We hooked up in the last half of his life. As I look through the items I realize how humble he was but he knew he was blessed with a gift. When Mitch Ryder would open for a huge band many of the musicians would steal a glance at the opening band. Mitch can still sing his butt off. He always had a talented backing band but Robert stood out. Inevitably he would be approached by the headliner's band and became friends with most. He would jam with many. I could list them but it would take too long. A couple you probably know are SRV, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Earle, Doyle Bramhall, Suzi Quatro, Kid Rock, Don Was, and on and on. I don't know why I'm telling you this. I guess it's because he didn't brag about it. I wish I could talk to him about some of his experiences. As fun as that all sounds it's not what I miss. I miss the man who was my best friend. I had the first birthday without him last month. In 2 days I'm facing the first Thanksgiving alone. I know Christmas will be rough as well. My life goes on for some reason. Maybe it's to share his memories with the people who attend the celebration of his life next month. I have to keep pushing ahead and organize the items I will share with his fans and friends. I just need to stop thinking about things like asking him if we need butter at the market. I'm half now and it's hard.

I remember nights like that. Wake us up at 1am to clean the floors then he'd throw all our belongings around. One night he was so drunk he took my older brother's bed apart and tried to flush it down the toilet. I still laugh everytime I recall that one. That was beyond crazy and he was seriously trying. Then we would also have a song to sing. It was the 50s and the song was: "He's got the whole world in his hands". He really liked that song for some reason. Good ol Days!

The G.I. who bunked above me was married and missing his wife a lot. He started crying and I pretended not to notice, I always felt guilty for unintentionally making him sad. When ever I hear this song that's what I remember.

    Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome, I could cry
I've never seen a night so long
    And time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry
Did you ever see a robin weep
    When leaves begin to die?
Like me, he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome, I could cry
The silence of a falling star
    Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome, I could cry
    That's a good one
    It's a lonesome song, ain't it?
    Ain't that lonesome, woo
Now you can't get any much lonesome right, can you?
Want to whip a will so lonesome it can't fly
    He done got lonesome, man
